you should be dragging the cards a bit diagonally, not horizontally towards yourself.

You can either use special cards made for manipulaton which are thinner or practice the strength of your fingers. Also breaking them in helps to get the stiffness out of the deck.
Do you need Manupulation Cards with this trick? Because I cannot do it with normal cards.
