As a card guy for 10 years, I found it super difficult to make the transition to coin magic. From the sleights to pantomiming. That all changed when I picked up a Coin Box. To me the Box acts sort of like a deck of cards where putting a coin into the box feels almost like losing a playing card into the deck. The added layer misdirection made me more confident with my sleights and audience management. I know box work is a completely different school of coin magic but it's something I highly recommend checking it out!

Benjamin Earl has "Deep Coin Work" in his deep seminars. It's 6 hours and gives a great overview and some of his most famous coin effects, many of which are pretty easy. If you wait for a sale it's an especially good deal. This is more for someone who already knows cards and wants to get into coins though.

I started with Bobo’s and I don’t disagree that it may not be the best for an absolute beginner. Roth’s Expert Coin Magic is a great resource. Mark Wilson’s is a great resource in general. So much money magic, but so much every other type too. I’d also recommend Eric Jones Metal 1 for an absolute beginner. That is possibly my #1 recommendation. I started with that right after Bobo’s and still love showing the coins across and 3fly from that download.

I do basically 0 coin magic BUT I have a super triple coin by Johnny wong and it's usually my go to if someone wants to see just 1 trick. It's fast, self contained, modular, and instant resets. I know I can't handle difficult sleights and passes but this allows me to feel like I can. If you don't do coins but want to add a little variety that's my recommendation!

Just pulled my blackbird out after years it really got me playing with coins after my I hand injury’s like a decade or more again. I have fit but it doesn’t fit my rings wish they’d make it in a fifty that would work with Garret Thomas kits. Lost my super triple split with my banded gimmicks stuck to a bench. Really like what Holcomb and Copeland have done for the industry.

Bobo was how I started but it was completely unintentional. I was at my very first Magic Convention and there was an auction, I put in a bid on a box of books and I won. It had an old hard cover of Bobo and Close up Card Magic by the one and only Harry Lorayne (which I later got him to sign when I ran into him at Tannens) I was still very much a beginner and the HL book at the time was far beyond my skill set. I still have and cherish both. I think another great book on sleights for beginners is Now you See it, Now you dont by Bill Tarr. Sponge Balls are also a great intro to coin magic. A great way to practice with slightly cheaper gaffs is Sucker Punch by Mark Southworth, it has a few of the same gaffs and some great effects. Some great recommendations sin this video, thanks as always!

For someone starting out with coin gaffs, I would recommend Sucker Punch by Mark Southworth. It runs about $40 but it comes with a whole set of Poker Chips that are basic coin gaffs you would spend hundreds of dollars on and the video is taught by Eric Jones. Yes the Poker chips are kind of cheap but they are perfect for practice and if you get serious, you will have an idea which gaffs you will want to spend your money on.

I broke my hand at the Del Mar fair years ago the troupe refused to rehearse and dropped me on the mount of my giraffe. That ended about three or four years of my serious practice and broke my wrist a few years later. Both never were set so I have pretty limited mobility. Gaffs are great but wish I hadn’t relied so heavy on gimmicks and learned to get over the trauma and make the sleights work. When there’s a master purest on the pitch, people take note and drop them likewise. Cellini knew the advantages of traveling light, wish I did. Smilesotheylikeyou

For video, The Metal series is the New New Expert Coin Magic. Eric Jones's teaching is clear and concise and what you get is the modern state of play in the realm of coin magic. Another hearty recommendation for the work of brother Danny Goldsmith. That kid is brilliant. Most of his commercial products are intermediate to advanced but his site also offers access to some good clear beginner teaching. Books Expert Coin Magic, Kaufman's if you can spare a kidney, Rubinstein's new book Coin Magic (this last also doubling as a self defense weapon/weight lifting implement). I think that Bobo's at this point is more of a reference book. A lot of stuff in there has just been outmoded by better methods available in the books I referenced. No disrespect to Maestro Bobo. Also check out Jeff Copeland's site for teaching and props. His shells are excellent (they are for a very nice round that he also sells) and his coin boxes are the business. Excellent video as always.
