Magic Morris (1999) - FULL EPISODE

Originally broadcast on Sunday, 23rd May, 1999, this is a tribute to the great Johnny Morris, who sadly had passed away a couple of weeks earlier on the 6th. Johnny, of course, was most famous for presenting Animal Magic for 21 years from 1962 to 1983 - and this excellent retrospective includes plenty of clips and out-takes, plus new and archive interviews, and that theme tune, all held together by links from the great Bill Oddie. It's a fitting tribute indeed.
Look out for appearances from old friends such as Christina the elephant and Dottie the ring-tailed lemur, plus of course the likes of Terry Nutkins, who fronted Animal Magic's spiritual successor The Really Wild Show. (In fact, on that subject, there's a zoo keeper in this named Don Packham - I wonder if he's any relation to Chris.) There's a truly hilarious bit with a gorilla, a baby polar bear has a bit of a mishap, and the ending with the camels shows just what sort of a person Johnny truly was. They don't make 'em like that any more.
Grateful thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

When I was a child, Johnny Morris's voice used to send me into spasms of inexpressible joy. I didn't need to see him with the animals, the voice alone was like catnip to me, like the best musical instrument you can imagine. Hearing him was like hearing a flute, or the deep notes on a piano, or a tuba, or the biggest fattest pipes of a church organ if you get the chance to stand next to them when the organist plays them loudly. Johnny Morris's voice was like aural bliss to me.

I grew up watching Animal Magic & Johnny Morris and ever since have ‘talked’ any animal I’ve met. My kids laughed a lot during their childhood, so I am not apologising for it. The BBC should repeat that show!

Because of the great Mr Morris, I gave voices to all the many cats in my family. Whenever a new cat arrives, my children ask what its voice is like. It's a part of everyday family life. What a lovely man. Thank you very much, wherever you are. Your memory is a blessing.

As a Welshman I'm always a little annoyed that he isn't lauded more in Wales. Should have at least a statue or an Animal conservation centre named after him here as the younger generation I'm sure would love this man if they'd heard of him

He got kids to appreciate animals even if they were stuck in a flat in the east end of London. What Sir David Attenborough did for adults in appreciating animals, Johnny did it for kids.

Sadly i heard that Delilah the gorilla died today 😢 on Wednesday, the 24th of January 2024 she had to be put to sleep after a chest infection and Her declining health she was the uks oldest ever living gorilla she had spent the last 34 years at Belfast zoo . when it mentioned that she appeared with Johnny Morris, in animal Magic I knew I would’ve seen that Programme growing up as a kid and I was right . Great to see those days when the BBC could make an actual decent program for kids to Watch back in the 70s Great clip 👍🏻!!
