First of all that video of Ueshiba is from when he was like 85 and second he was not teaching "fighting techniques" he was demonstrating timing, leading, extension, and centering. They are the principles that the techniques are based on. Criticizing Ueshiba for that clip is like criticizing Mike Tyson after watching a clip of him shadow boxing and using a speed bag declaring, "He is punching air! That bag is not going to punch back! What a fraud!"

I had no idea the founder was on the same page. For some reason I thought it was based on reality, like it was an actual practice (even though traditional martial arts fail hard over sports/science based training such as Boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA). Thanks for this. Subscribed!

1968 ~ 1975, the glory days of martial arts madness in the US. The TV show Kung Fu was popular for 3 seasons (72~75) and there were some really crazy ideas about martial arts in general. Sadly, the gullible public thought the special effects in the cheesy Chinese (and some Japanese) movies were real. There were people who came into the dojo I studied in and expected to see people jumping 15 feet in the air, and fly 40 feet across the training area while doing 8 or 10 flips.

Apologies, I used the wrong wording and yes should've read it before I posted. What I intended to say is that it does not derive in modern day from full contact martial arts in today's gym. I used western boxing as a contact sport reference. True I after reading what I said it did sound incorrect. But it doesn't change the ineffective teachings of aikido. It's still all hypothetical nonsense wether it originally derived from a true war/combat style or not.

The video of O Sensei he was 82 years old.... Martial Arts were forbidden after ww2. And Aikido was changed to a soft version known as Akikai. Akikai isn't nothing, it is just two people knowing that they can resist the technique but choose not to do. On the other hand and a men kept the real aikido, is name was Morihiro Saito. He maintained the techequnices and added methos of training. Show video of him to see difference. I don't say Aikido is perfect but it isn't the joke that you tried to show.

No attempt is made in this video to present aikido as a joke. It was made as a clarification. Comments about Magic Martial Arts Foolishness 1 & 2 stated that since Yanagi and Watanabe sensei were making people fall down by simply waving their hands in the air they Could Not be practicing aikido because no such thing is done in aikido. Well, obviously the founder of aikido, in several aikido demonstrations, made people fall down by simply waving his hand in the air. And, the fact that he was 82 at the time he did it has no bearing upon this particular discussion. :-) Keep on the lookout for Magic Martial Arts Foolishness 3.

aikido does not claim that you can throw or push down someone wo touching aikido in some demos is expressing principles of certain aspects of a wrist or hold ...aikido is different in practice but when there are demos of principles they are not trying to show real force it is a demo to teach and show principles clearly...in fighting situation the principles are not going to be visible...its wiser to slow down and exadurate to clearly show what is happening....aikido is not fake look at its lineage it stems from jujitsu...aikido lacks ground work like most martial arts do

I took a few lesson with the famous Terry Dobson years ago. He and his student did some amazing things, so it isn't all bs. The cooperation of the students with Ueshiba is just that and prevents injury I"m sure. Imagine actually getting hit in karate or kung-fu class? How could you learn, you'd be too defensive to work the moves. Like all Martial Arts, not all techniques work and not with every practitioner. I've been involved for many years off and off, have a brown sash in Kung-fu, and have had some time in with American Goju, Uieshi Ryu, kendo, and many other schools and arts. You have to be aware of what works and what doesn't, that's why Bruce Lee never wanted a "style." You come to expect things to work a certain way. Personally, I've never been part of some "federation" That's when things get weird. I noticed the Gracies are giving out mail-order black belts. Now that is a travesty!

In aikidou, it has nothing to do with woowoo, despite what some teachers say. It's just physics and redirecting the attackers' energy to use against them. It's pretty hard to use successfully on a fighter actually trained in combat, but if you practice in it enough (many years) it can be used with much success even against seasoned fighters.

Enrique Cabrera I don't understand what you are trying to say. "Nothing proprietary about that making it aikido except the book saying it is" What do you mean by this? "And there is no 'energy' transfer", I'm just saying it's about redirecting the opponents force used against you. You put energy in scare quotes, why? It's not a mystical term, energy exists clearly. It cannot be created nor destroyed, but can he changed and redirected. For instance, if you are running towards me, and then you trip, it will cause more damage to you/you will fall harder than if you were walking slowly and tripped. Aikido works on a similar concept, minimally using your own energy and using mostly the opponents'. I would like to know how it's been "debunked". All martial arts revolve around using energy and transforming it to achieve results. This is not mystical woowoo, it's simple physics.

  • @enriquecabrera2137

Simple physics that everybody except aikido understands. Hold your arm out. Get flipped Throw a punch. Get flipped Run at me. Get flipped. One of them had no need for "energy transfer". Do you understand? This is basic stuff, man.

Of course it's Aikido, and unlike actual combat derived martial arts (such as Muay Thai, Karate, Boxing or Jujitsu) it's actually all hypothetical bullshit. It may help with balance and suppleness for training purposes but will get someone killed in a real fight.

  • @Jiyukan

Neither is there Aikido in the movie above (except it being mentioned in some texts), nor is Karate a combat derived martial art, nor is Boxing a martial art at all. "Martial Art" a Art of Combat derived from *war fare.* Martial=war. So: Yes, Aikido and Muay Thai are strictly speaking derived from war fare, hence they are martial arts. Karate is closely related via Ko Budo to war fare, hence it is a martial art, too. Boxing is not. Get a clue before posting. Ah, I have to correct myself, in the end are videos with the founder, well he is about 80 on those videos, so grant him some slack. I'd like to see you when you are that old.

boxing is not a martial art? would you call it a physical science? Semantics. From what I've seen, most students of boxing can knock the hell out of most students of martial arts. But I think labels misrepresent too much. An hour in the gym is worth more than a year of reading about multiple arts.

  • @snakeman9902

Jiyukan Boxing isn't a martial art? I would say boxing and wrestling are both martial arts going off your description, as going back in Roman times, types of grappling and punching styles were used in warfare once you lost your weapons. In modern English army punching styles are used for toughness, like milling this has been used for many years. Metal chainmail around the hands had protection against sword attacks, was also used for punching. Punching and grappling has always been used, that could be considered a fore runner for modern arts that we know today. as far as the actual art Aikido isn't it only 100 YRS approx old? Boxing is far older than that, it has been around in England for 100s of years as bare knuckle events and travelling carnivals just like wrestling.

Martial arts are called that way because they are an "art of doing" something which is useful or evolved in a "martial" context. In other words, like music or drawing/painting it is an Art because it is concerned about its own sake. Boxing and wrestling are combat sports. Not Martial Arts. MMA is besides its name, combats sports. Historically the inventors wanted to have different schools of martial arts to compete with each other, e.g. Thai Boxing with a Judoka, as an extreme example. Boxing and also european (greek / roman) wrestling as we have it in the olympics is not a martial art but a combat system. It has nothing to do with historical fist fighting styles anyway. You probably refer to Pankration,, the old greek fighting system which also was part of ancient Olympic games. For me there is a triangle of three terms: combat sports, fighting system/self defense and martial art. Heck, you could make that a square even if you want to separate fighting system from self defense. Those things can overlap. Depending on time and "system" you look at. E.g. Aikido could be defined a self defense system around 1920. Today it is not. Sword and dagger attacks against which Aikido is effective, don't happen in our time anymore. Aikido is not a fighting system either as the founder designed it to be none. A fighting system would e.g. Krav Maga, or modern MMA, where athletes from the start only learn a subset of techniques that "seem to work in the octagon" and are more or less randomly picked from other martial arts. Nevertheless MMA is only a combat sports in my eyes ... it has no real self defense techniques. It is useless for a SWAT team. Boxing or wrestling is not a fighting system and not self defense, and never was. So it is extremely far away from a martial art like Ken Jutsu or Karate or Aikido. OTOH, "what is useful for a SWAT team" is not really a definition for any of the terms above. E.g. epending of country SWAT teams *also* learn Aikido ;D

  • @snakeman9902
    @snakeman99027 жыл бұрын

There seems to be a mixed opinion even by so called experts what Martial Arts means, generally, what most experts agree on is Martial Arts is a system that was/is used in war/competition and ritually practiced. Considering that Sambo and mixed martial arts, Thai Boxing etc, is practiced in real life situations in war and competition, this would be definately considered a MA, this would include Boxing, Jui Jitsu and Wrestling/grappling arts, as all these are used in the above. Technically this would as far as Aikido goes, would be a martial art, the term Martial Art is actually a western invention, no person originally termed their chosen art, a Martial Art as they was proud of their system and would use the name it was given out of pride, ie Wing Chun Thai Boxing- or just boxing etc Most of the Martial Arts today are within the 100yrs when they were invented, in which case they wouldn't have been used in the days of old, as they are adaptions and variations of times of old.

of course morihei is not throwing them with magic nor does he think he is its demonstrating if somone tries to take your wrists then he can use x principle to act against...morihei was a student and a master in many Japanese ma..he knew very well that this is not a real representation of a fight..aikido is not traditional fighting art..but it's not fake...all time I have studied aikido I have never heard of superstition or not touching techniques we do full contact
