Maghe Sankranti is also known by different names in various regions, such as Makar Sankranti, Maghi, and various other local names. The word "Sankranti" refers to the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara in Sanskrit), marking the end of the month of Poush and the beginning of the month of Magh in the Hindu lunar calendar.
The festival holds cultural and religious significance. In Nepal, people take ritual baths in rivers and visit temples, especially at the confluence of rivers. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip during this time cleanses them of sins and brings good fortune. Sesame seeds and molasses sweets are consumed, and kite-flying is a popular tradition during Maghe Sankranti.
