Eddie Hazel was only 21 years old. He was flying on high doses of yellow sunshine acid, and George told him to play like his mother died. He was surrounded by stacks of Marshall amps, wah pedal cocked, and foxxtone fuzz (from what I've gathered), and recorded this entire improvised solo in just one take. One take.
@BSIII
2 жыл бұрын
The echo effect is two Echoplex tape echo units. The wah is likely a Vox (I've found a photo of Eddie on stage during this era and he's using a Vox).

@@bsh819 I got the info from George Clinton's autobiography. Whether Clinton's memory is accurate or not is a different story, though it's very well-known that the Funkadelic boys ate lots of acid, recorded full albums while on it, and performed shows on it. To me Maggot Brain definitely sounds like a heavy acid trip so I don't doubt the story for one second.

Eddie Hazel, 21 years old recorded this solo in one take, in the middle of Marshall stacks. He was flying on high doses of the yellow sunshine acid the entire time, and George told him to play like his mother just died, which he certainly did. He recorded this masterpiece in one take. This is an incredibly awesome example of great guitar playing that got lost in the shuffle because there was so much talent during the late 60's and early 70's. This isn't the pedals doing the work! Naw... instead, that's pure sweet tone coming off this guys fingers for sure!!! If you don't have the chops to start with, all the pedals in the world won't make a difference
@shannonhenson609

He had a good tone on this tune....but Eddie also used wah wah pedals all the time. I used to have a Big Muff pedal myself. That was one of his favorites.

@@shannonhenson609 there's no info on Eddie using big muff during the maggot Brain era. It's believed to be a Foxx Tone Machine, which adds up because of that ridiculously thick sputtery part on the climax.
