Maggi Hambling - 'Every Portrait is Like a Love Affair' | Artist Interview | TateShots
Maggi Hambling is a British painter and sculptor known for her intricate portraits and seascapes. The artist uses her creative practice as a grieving tool to cope with the loss of her loved ones such as Henrietta Moraes, her mother and father.
We visited the Suffolk-born artist in her home studio as she is now working of a series of laughing portraits.

I like that
I love; "If you're going to be an artist you must make your work your best friend..." yes I feel that. & "Every portrait is a bit like a love affair" and so so much more in this video that I plan to play over & over. Lovely.

Maybe also taken in panorama (in whole field view) that might be rephrased to: "If you're going to be alive (or act so) you must make yourself a best friend"
I’m 72 1/2. Been wondering how I could ever stop I’m so driven to paint or pout. Maggie says it...”unlike tennis players or ballet dancers we don’t ever have to stop”. She looks strong despite her cigarette and vital. Our work keeps us kickin! Her work is simply mind boggling.
I love: @ 5:10 once you make one mark then you probably have to make several hundred more. Very tough to leave it alone sometimes!

The World requires more people like Maggie Hambling.
GREAT artist and so damn cool as a person
Love Maggie Hambling, I picked her as one of my inspiration artists when doing a level art. Her work is so expressive and yet captures the essence of a subject so well.

Aw man... I really like her and I find that makes me love their artwork
A short video, and yet the few words the artist speaks hold such power and insight.
What an incredible woman an artist. Beautiful and humbling.
Love her work, sculpture and painting... she's a creature of sorts...lurking around, groveling with her feelings.
Her work is a good energy that makes me live harder.
You made me cry and happy at the same time. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you...
I like what she said about 'buggering about' when talking about the process of painting
Deeply engaged work. And engaging. Love her.
What an incredible woman 💞
Fantastic insights.
I love your very raw and at the same time totally sensitive way of approching whatever you do. It seems to open into deep experience of life, death, mystery. It is so alive, so intense even if it is just here in youtube that I have seen your work-
This woman is awesome!
Wonderful Maggie Hambling. I confer: every work of art is like an affair, and every affair an elusive work of art.
Always such inspiration
One more time Maggi is a true legend , I would most definitely spend some time with this woman .
Beautiful I enjoyed watching
Lovely video, the energy and pacing is really nice. Maggi is such a great artist and fascinating speaker :)
Unapologetically forthright and beautiful in her work .. fascinating
The ability to express what is in your mind and put it on paper like this is an incredible gift. Because what is in your mind is only based upon what is real and enhanced in such a way that only someone who can directly put it on paper we can all see what is in her head. A photograph can not do this, because it can only take pictures in real life
Love you tate😭❤️

It seems like each moment and stroke of her work on the paintings had true significance, it was not arbitrary. It shows.
The laughing man with the yellow back rough is the epitome of joy at it's pinnacle
what a cool dudette
Good stuff
I love you, grammy!
02:55 Yes, how do you know when a painting is finished - More could always be done - but a feeling washes over knowing when enough is enough.
yes
HELPFUL FOR SOME FOLKS: she talked about the state of being ready to let art spread through you or something. i heard something the other day, where an artist said - its not that important. so try that out. just dont give a flying fock about how its gonna end up in the first place and that might help you to be more free about what you do. helps you to get there with love and stuff uknow? its all about that you do it. thats it. the universe will reveal itself through you if you let yourself be cool with it.

of course im not speaking against what she said about the love affair with your picture. im a fuckin perfectionist too and it can be quite difficult sometimes. but on the other hand that can be the fun about it too. to put it in a nutshell - do what u feel.
Dude, the talent of this person, it's scary, i have the same thing looking at a picasso or van gogh, it's just too good, it's actually aggravating
Amazing video

Very interesting woman.
At 01:58, out of that early morning mist a true visitation ("this image of my father") of that muse/the beyond. At 04:36, the second from left is clearly a camel's head with human shaped (or just drooping? ". . . certain, uncertainty about . . .") ears.
the musician Colleen quoted the same saying of Brancusi 👂🏾 👂🏾
What a badass
swaggy ol lady
