Magaluf Locals Protest Against British Tourists

Travel expert Simon Calder says there is a tide of uprising against tourism across Europe. With protests in the Canary Islands, tourist taxes in Venice and demands for better behaviour from British tourists in party places like Magaluf.
The conversation also touched on the fluctuating nature of the travel industry and the importance of considering the ethical implications of tourism., and that where some destinations were already looking at cutting prices to tempt back in, other areas may follow too.

Have you ever been to Magaluf ? It's basically an 18-30s destination and the cheaper version of Ibiza . However I agree with you because I myself am a non drinker which is why I avoid destinations like this at my age . The locals knew exactly what they where doing and it was highly encouraged as I did in my 20s go to Magaluf. Back in the early 2000s it was £2 for half a pint of vodka with red bull ! But now they complain? Double standards if you ask me .

@@annepoitrineau5650 We maybe they should of had a look in the history books . I mean even our establishment carry on like yobs during a pandemic. The reason our citizens act out on holiday is because of the relentless day to day stress of life here in this capitalist society. The Americans are the same but they never leave America. When a society expects like ours then when young adults get a break they go nuts . After all if you going to sell alcohol on the scale I mentioned before then what did they expect? They also have 24 hour bars unlike say Greece or Turkey . The place is set up like a massive party so that's what they got . So if they want to tone it down then they need to take measures to do so .

The main problem for the Spanish islands id that because of foreigners buying up property there, the house prices have now gone above what the average spanish worker can afford considering what they are able to earn. This is driving many of the locals out of the property market and the areas the workers need to live in. Much the same has happened here in Cornwall for example. The protests are mainly to do with the way their government has handled this situation and not that they want to block british tourists from going there. This is just the perception that our mainstream media is pushing. You have to ask yourself why? What is the real reason that we, the British, being persuaded (lied to) into staying away!

I was in Lanzarote when these protests first started. Speaking to the holiday rep who had been a resident for 12 years, she said there is a lot of rubbish being thrown about by the UK media. The problem is the rise of air BnB’s, companies buying property to rent making it impossible for locals and migrant workers to get accommodation due to being priced out of the market. Sound familiar? The Lake district, Yorkshire dales/coast, Devon and Cornwall and many more have the same problem.

Most of the protests in the "Canaries Islands" are about is the lack of affordable rental properties for locals. This is because the local authorities have issued to many licences to convert residential properties into Air B&B's leaving next to nothing for the locals to live in. This is probably the same foe the "Balearic Islands", the locals are getting pushed out. Also it's the local Authorites who set the rules buy which pubs, clubs and bars operate in, so it's thier fault whth the things that are going wrong not the tourists.

We Brits transported our culture and traditions to the Balearic Islands, don't learn the local language. Have our own shops. There's parts of the Costa Del Sol, where British immigrants can't even speak passable Spanish after a decade of residency. We don't integrate into local culture. Push up house prices for the locals. Bloody Hell, I sound like Farage.

Never quite understood the need to travel to a foreign country just to get drunk and cause trouble. I'm sure regular sensible travellers would welcome the local police being harsher with those who bring shame to our country.

I live in Corfu. The island lives for tourism. But we are being swamped. I look forward to winter every year. Just to have the roads free of confusion and accidents, and beaches free of umbrellas and sun loungers. This is of course, selfish of me. But i dont rely on the huge amounts of cash brought to the island by tourism. Its a necessary evil.

We pour billions into state schools and apparently what we get is individuals who cannot read, write - even in their own language - vomit, swear, brawl, pass out, then start the same (spin) cycle. Yep, that looks like a good investment.

It’s no surprise. Scotland & England officially claim the top two spots in the whole of Europe for seeing the least amount of sunshine hours annually on average. If, you lived there you would want to go to a sunny destination. By April in particular after a long dark Winter, you’re practically craving feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin!

It’s only certain kinds of people who act like this. If you go to Ascot races, a posh event, you get coachloads of rowdy drunken northerners pile out, who take over the Silver Ring (not the Grandstand of course) and throw up over themselves, and that’s just the women. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, one guy walked up to me, grabbed my hand and pretended to kiss it then said ‘I can smell your pussy’ before waving his fingers in my face then sniffing them. Charming. Another tried to bully me into letting him push in front at the bar and threatened to punch me when I didn’t. 6ft bloke versus 5ft woman. In broad daylight in a bar. I could sense how many eyes were watching ready to step in but even so, behaviour like that is disgusting. And it’s always the same kinds of people. Thuggish northerners or Londoners with tattoos and names like Liam. Showing off in front of their thuggish mates. They shouldn’t be allowed anywhere let alone Ascot races.

It’s a similar situation in the Uk in Lake District, Cornwall and Devon -local people can’t afford to live there due to second homes, airbnbs etc, and are being forced out, so it’s understandable why people in Europe are also getting fed up. I think people who promote tourism needs to take more responsibility and realise what us someone’s 2 week pleasure causes others considerable pain.

I stay in Fuerteventura the main issue is foreigners buying holiday homes and only using them a month a year, the apartments that were available for long term rentals are €700/month for a one bed now they are being let to tourist's for €350/week pricing the locals out of the market. I am resident here but there are thousands of properties bought for investment and are lying empty most of the year. If those people are not staying and not renting out to residents they should pay a monthly tax on empty properties.

People talk about the benefits of tourism, but increasingly, as foreign investors buy up hotels and turn housing into B&Bs, the locals are relegated to waiting tables and cleaning rooms. In exchange, they find themselves priced out of local restaurants and crowded off of local beaches, etc. International Corporate Tourism doesn't bring the kind of benefits tourism did 30 years ago when local residents owned the businesses making all the money. If locals aren't profiting from tourism, having drunk rowdy tourists roaming the streets all night loses its appeal. They're no longer tourists, they're invaders.
