    Thanks for the review! The reason that makes the current installation experience not quite well is because the current O-rings are a little bit soft and a little small in size. We are working on the update of the O-rings in size and density for a better installation experience. And we will upload a video to show the difference about 2 weeks later.

    You could have done a similar housing for the cartridge that is on the portafilter handle, maybe with more ridges for the grip. Take a look at how cream siphons brands like Mastrad do it: there's no thread on the co² cartridge but there's one on the housing. You put the cartridge in the housing, you thread the housing into the siphon head and voilà, the cartridge is perforated, co² goes into the siphon, no leak whatsoever, it's very efficient and elegant. I've been using this for years, never had a problem, it's very secure.

    Not a fan of creating extra waste with co2 cartridges. Even if hand espresso machines like the flair aren’t as nice to use, I don’t think adding a new cost and waste to making espresso is a great solution. I know you can use a bike pump but then it loses the compactness and you might as well use a flair at that point.

    Great to see new aramse content, welcome back. To the product, as interesting as it may sound at first, if you are not handicapped in terms of handling a manual lever, I do not see why you would prefer disposable cartridges or a loud pump (you have to recharge) over it. I see once more how ingenious the robot is. For my medium roasts I even prefer results without preheating, and the cleanup is a breeze. If you are not able to handle levers however, it might be a great device, especially if there was a working version of the first concept.

    Nice little espresso machine! I am also a huge fan of 'silent' espresso! Using a hand pump with some sort of air storage canister (like an empty soda bottle) seems a bit more environmentally friendly, compared to throwing empty Co2 canisters regularly. usually they don't last more than 5-7 shots. Another way is to use a larger refillable!! Co2 canister, like the soda stream canisters! If I am not wrong, nice KRK monitors you have sitting there in the background!

    Great of you to give recognition to the MyPressi Twist. I have the V2 and still use it from time to time. Sadly, not too many exist in the wild so I’m very thankful to have one in my possession. It’s such a wonderful little gadget with which I pull my very first god shot with coming into espresso many years ago. Anyway I still have it and pull shots with it a few times a year with it. It is a little piece of history I’ll never let go of. This machine looks very interesting. Thank you for sharing! You earned yourself +1 sub. Kudos Btw. If you ever get your hands in a Cera espresso maker, it’s probably the best portable espresso maker I’ve ever used, with the only downside being its limited single shot volume. Anyway this should mean a lot coming from someone who has owned a La Marzocco LMLM, Strietman ES2, half a dozen Olympia Express 67’s (as well as a late model version) and several incredibly expensive hand and electric grinders (2 HG-1’s and an EG-1) among many, many other machines, grinders and gadgets.

I had backed the Xbar on Kickstarter before getting my picopresso, which was a very similar product to the maespresso that failed to release outside of china. The benefits to the o-ring design are the potential aftermarket extraction baskets and replaceable parts to the portafitler. The original design would eventually fail from the basket deforming.

    I think that I might still like the Nomad a tiny bit more. Both machines are pretty cleaning-heavy once you're done brewing, but the Nomad has a bigger water reservoir. You can also swap between pressurized and non-pressurized portafilter. On the downside though, there's a heck of a lot of plastic involved with the Nomad... There just hasn't been a small, manual espresso brewer that doesn't have some kind of drawback quite yet.

    I love how gadgety it feels, especially when you use cartridges, but I think too much expense went into making it small. For around the same money, I could buy an older breville/sage machine and not need the kettle/grinder and get a more normal portafilter. For a little more (if I was interested in manual), I could get a Flair 58 which has the heated group. All that said, this is a really cool device, and I hope to see more cool tiny espresso setups in the future.

If the Maespresso didn't use silicone I would back it on kickstarter BUT it's incredible to me how the coffee industry refuses to get rid of cancer causing plastics in their machines. Boiling water passing through a silicone basket, shot after shot, can't be healthy. For me, the Cafelat Robot still reigns supreme. C'mon, Maespresso, fix these problems. We are rooting for you.

  • @davidhunternyc1

    @davidhunternyc1

    27 күн бұрын

    What is Silicone? The plastics industry considers silicone a plastic, and so do we, regardless of much of the green marketing claiming it is not a plastic. Technically, silicone could be considered part of the rubber family. But, if you define plastics widely, as we do, silicone is something of a hybrid between a synthetic rubber and a synthetic plastic polymer. Silicone can be used to make malleable rubber-like items, hard resins, and spreadable fluids. We treat silicone as a plastic like any other, given that it has many plastic-like properties: flexibility, malleability, clarity, temperature resistance, water resistance. Like plastic, it can be shaped or formed and softened or hardened into practically anything. But it is a unique plastic because it is much more temperature resistant and durable than most plastics and has a low reactivity with chemicals. And while water resistant, it is also highly gas permeable, making it useful for medical or industrial applications where air flow is required. It's also easy-to-clean, non-stick, and non-staining, making it popular for cookware and kitchen utensils. So what exactly are silicones (or siloxanes, as their backbone chemical structure is called)? Many people seem to think they are a natural material derived directly from sand. Not so. Like any plastic polymer, silicones are synthetic and include a mix of chemical additives derived from fossil fuels. The key difference from the common carbon-based plastics we describe here is that silicones have a backbone made of silicon. It’s important to get the terminology right here, and there are three distinct related substances to understand: Silica: When people say silicones are made of sand, they are not incorrect, though that’s too simplistic a description. Silica-or silicon dioxide-is what they are referring to. Silica is the raw material used to make silicone resins. Beach sand is practically pure silica, as is quartz. Silicon: This is the base element that makes up silica, but silicon is not generally found in nature in this elemental form. It is made by heating silica at very high temperatures with carbon in an industrial furnace. Silicone (siloxane): The silicon is then reacted with fossil fuel-derived hydrocarbons to create the siloxane monomers (alternating silicon + oxygen atoms) which are bonded together into polymers to form the backbone of the final silicone resin. The quality of these silicones can vary greatly depending on the level of purification done. For example, the silicones used to make computer chips are highly purified. Thus, while most plastics have a polymer backbone of hydrogen and carbon, silicones have a backbone made of silicon and oxygen, and hydrocarbon side groups - all of which gives them plastic-like characteristics. Silicone is often used for baby nipples, cookware, bakeware, utensils, and toys. Silicones are also used for insulation, sealants, adhesives, lubricants, gaskets, filters, medical applications (e.g., tubing), casing for electrical components. Is Silicone Safe? Many experts and authorities consider silicone completely safe for food use. For example Health Canada states: "There are no known health hazards associated with use of silicone cookware. Silicone rubber does not react with food or beverages, or produce any hazardous fumes." Scientific American reports that in 1979 the US Food and Drug Administration determined silicon dioxides-the raw material for silicone products-were safe for food-grade applications. However, the first silicone cookware only appeared a decade later (e.g., spatulas) and no follow-up studies were done to assess whether silicone cookware leaches anything potentially harmful. The fact is, there has not been a lot of research done to date on the health effects of silicone. Nonetheless, our own research and review of peer-reviewed scientific studies that have been done indicates we should begin to be cautious about silicone. Silicones are not completely inert or chemically unreactive and can release toxic chemicals. They can leach certain synthetic chemicals at low levels, and the leaching is increased with fatty substances, such as oils. One study tested the release of siloxanes from silicone nipples and bakeware into milk, baby formula and a simulant solution of alcohol and water. Nothing was released into the milk or formula after six hours, but after 72 hours in the alcohol solution several siloxanes were detected. Another study found siloxanes being released from silicone bakeware, with leaching increasing as the food fat content increased. A review of the literature indicated that the key critical effects of common siloxanes, as shown in animal studies, are impaired fertility and potential carcinogenicity (2005 Report by the Danish Ministry of the Environment: Siloxanes - Consumption, Toxicity and Alternatives). The European Union considers certain siloxanes to be endocrine disruptors (Study on enhancing the Endocrine Disruptor priority list with a focus on low production volume chemicals, ENV.D.4/ETU/2005/00w28r) Silicone tubing commonly used for medical applications has been shown to leach several chemicals, including dioctyl phthalate (2006 study in International Journal of Pharmaceutics: Extractables/leachables from plastic tubing used in product manufacturing) Silicone intravenous devices have been shown to leach silicone and cause local inflammation (1999 Study in Archives of Disease in Childhood: Plastic migration from implanted central venous access devices) Silicone is not as inert, stable and chemically unreactive as many claim. Use with caution, and if you can find an alternative, use it. While silicone is durable and has a high temperature resistance, it makes us queasy to be heating food to very high temperatures in a material like silicone which has been shown to leach chemicals and is not completely inert and stable. There are excellent glass, ceramic and stainless steel options for cooking and baking. Yes, we do consider silicones a safer alternative to Teflon and similar non-stick cookware that may have perfluorinated chemicals, but we would opt to use it only when there is really no other choice. We just don’t like the idea of it being subjected to such extreme temperatures while in direct contact with food (often oily food).

    Good ear. It’s a new studio and we’re still sorting out the audio and acoustic treatment. We’ve had to use processing to tame the reverb so some words are being gated too heavily. Should get better in the next one.

    Damn. How did I get deep enough into coffee now that I want this stupid thing. I even have both CO2-cartridges and that same pump. Thank god the o-ring is a complete deal breaker for me.

    Like the product but no need for it to use a 58mm. Smaller machines do better with smaller portafilters. Smaller P.F. are easier to tamp and don't need grounds stirring.

    So fundamentally a new mypressi twist - personally the use of such isn’t good for airtravel and environmental reasons I owned it, fun could be a pita, probably with having to soak it in water multiple times in preheating, some plastic tendency to break and sometimes there wasn’t more then one shot in it so you lost a shot of coffee. When it worked it made nice coffee with more developed roast it couldn’t really handle the light as it lacked the temperature for it. Also had the O-ring issue

    What's wrong with electricity? CO2 cartridges really aren't eco friendly, they make Nespresso capsules look green. I'm a cyclist, the idea of using my bike pump to make my coffee isn't exactly appealing. And these electric bike pumps are obnoxiously loud, and run on battery so inevitably you'll forget to charge it and won't be able to make coffee that day. For such a gadget, it's expensive too, although I can understand where the money goes if it's all metal. What I don't understand is why something like this needs to exist when there are so many cheap Italian electric machines that work just fine.

    If you use an intermediary pressure storage canister, you can pre pressure it with a hand air pump. Keeps you fit as well!
