I saw Madonna in Speed-the-Plow. She handled the role perfectly well. More importantly, her presence was commanding, charismatic, and larger than life. Seeing her in a Broadway play was a once in a lifetime thrill.

Watching her here in video, I don't see any acting talent whatsoever. But I do understand what you mean about commanding, larger-than-life presence. That she has in spades. She just doesn't have the intrinsic genius or talent that the actors we love and revere have, also in spades. The reviews were scathing. CBS2 "Ineptitude scandalously thorough."; Daily News, "No, she can't act." But I do admire her resilience, to go headlong into something so challenging to her own abilities, not letting the criticism deter her from getting all she wanted out of the experience. To this day, I don't consider her an actress. She's a visual artist, through music. MTV was a perfect medium for her particular talent - as was the sociology of the 1980s. I remember a co-worker describing her when she sat in the row in front of her at a Sonic Youth concert, c. 1986. People were heckling her and Sean Penn from behind, only to have Madonna suddenly turn around and essentially disarm everyone with these enormous blue eyes.

@@frankmoran465 I agree 100%. Madonna is not an actress because she just can't pretend to be another person that is not Madonna. That's why she got good reviews on "Desesperately Seeking Susan", because she was just interpreting herself. On the other hand, as you said, music and MTV were the perfect vehicles for her kind of art, that is a very visual and very expressive. But acting... no, is not her thing.

Madonna on people minds trought the albums, music videos, concert shows, MTV, VMA's, music events as the Live Aids, TV performances, TV commercials, movies actress, theater actress, radio, TV interviews, magazines covers, fashion & behaviour trendsetter. No wonder she received in 1989 the Artist of The Decade award concerning the 1980's decade

I never get tired of watching these old footages showing the magic that Madonna was during the 80's. She was the embodiment of young raw ambition, of the american dream.... Even her physical aspect was perfect for being Madonna : she had that typical american-italian face, with the perfect white skin, and that carved dancer body that showed the years of sweat and tears to get where she was.

It only takes six weeks to become a Broadway Star? Sign me up at the neighborhood method acting studio! Madonna can be a very good actress--when she is able to put aside her ego of being a superstar and risk letting the world see her as the character, not as herself the pop star. "D.S.Susan" is an example: She was relaxed and organic, but when she did "Shanghai S." she was more self-conscious and gave a wooden performance because she tried too hard to create an uptight character.

To this day I will never understand why Madonna did this. In 1988 she was at the peak of her career just finishing out her True Blue album and fans were expecting another album to come out at around this time. But instead, she takes on Broadway of all things. Good that she was able to rebound in 1989. Broadway could have Madonna’s JTS moment lol.
