I saw in an interview that she explained that this performance was an integration between a Victorian Ball with the underground BALL. Thus, she dragged it out and lip-synched for her life as its custom in an actual ball. This is why she didn’t even bother to wear a mic. This women is so ahead of her time! The younger generation of LGBTQ+ will never fully understand why she is the Queen. This is House Mother realness!

She announced before hand it wasn’t going to be live, she was recreating a Harlem vogue ball so they were all in their French revolution Marie Antoinette realness drag and she lip synced for her life just like a drag ball or as you saw in Pose. That what I love about Madonna, the small details.

No way she lip synced because it’s the drag thing to do. Like a lip sync for your life thing. I think it’s a huge costume and huge amazing production. She sang the song originally so it’s whatever. But she’s even said she’s not the best singer. I’m just saying I don’t think doing this production and singing live was an option... just saying;)

@@howtoapply3186 no, the concept is the House of Madonna presenting Marie Antoinette realness at a ball; including the legendary children of the House of Extravaganza, Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Camacho Xtravaganza. It was supposed to be lip-synced because back then lip-syncing at the ballroom was just being introduced. Madonna said of herself that she's not the best singer out there but that doesn't mean she's not a good singer. She is great acoustic. Her voice means a lot to millions. It doesn't matter who does it, I don't like Madonna covers, for example. Dame Shirley Bassey , who I adore, covered "You'll See" but did not give me what Madonna does when she sings. Singing is much more than having octaves and this old age saying that Madonna is not a good singer needs to stop.

I was in grade nine highschool and whether you were gay or straight first thing in the morning in the cafeteria all students could talk about was this performance. All her live performances were talked about in my catholic highschool. We had a huge art program including drama so Madonnas videos were often dissected and discussed. There were a few Madonna wannabees who performed vogue during our yearly talent night and the gays always drew a crowd. My personal art work was always heavily influenced by Madonna from paintings of woman in corsets, heals, tight body suits, blonde ponytails and cleavage. My art teacher in grade 12 asked me in private if I had an obsession with breasts and cleavage (lol). Its funny because haters of Madonna would often say she wont last she keeps changing her identity and that she doesnt have her own. However reinvention became Madonna and that is how this one lone female has been able to remain relevant, powerful, adored and respected by literally everyone in the music industry. Yes bow down bitches! Another great vlog Derek😁👏👏👏❤💙💚💛💜

This performance was also part of MTV TOP 10 Most Memorable VMA Performances ever at #02 kept from #01 by Madonna "Like a Virgin" 1984 performance at the very first VMAs (this was voted the past decade the 10's). This was already 90's but 1990 so really early 90's. "Vogue" song was released in April and this performance was in early September (after her Blond Ambition Tour that was from April to August that year). This song and this performance certainly inspired a lot of later 90s songs and performances. She did not sing it live and that was assumed. This version is an edit from the 12" Club Remix (available for streaming on Madonna KZread channel).

Because you're 30 years younger than me I was bummed that you missed out on the heydays of disco, and you were only four years old when Madonna released this song. But while you missed the actual days, you haven't missed a thing when it comes to what those days were all about and what they still mean to us. I haven't been to a club in years, but that life, those loves, still carry on. And you caught the fire. Thank you. Carry on, sweetheart. Carry on.

OG Madonna fan here. She was at the height of her popularity and this performance was one of the pinnacles of Madonna-dom! There's a reason so many people urged you to watch this one! Seen onstage are longtime backup singers Niki and Donna, and two members of the House of Xtravaganza. I have a recommendation for you and it's off the beaten path: there's a number called "Masquerade" in the movie version of "Phantom of the Opera" which is an INSANELY choreographed/costumed number featuring vogueing. PS after all these years that first SNAP of the fans STILL gives me goosebumps!

I was 13 years old when they did this. I truly thought that Madge was singing about the magazine when the song came out, even after seeing the video. Then I saw this and I "GOT" it. I loved how the audience gave props to Niki and Donna when they came out, and my heart stopped for that fan flip. My classmates at school the next day couldn't stop talking about it. Even now, people are STILL shook by this.

Never get tired of Vogue. This is the song that I started to discover Madonna music and artistry. Not only she has a unique voice and is a good dancer, but she is also such a great artist and performer.

I remember watching the VMA's when Madge performed Vogue. Such a great performance I remember when she released the Justify My Love video this live VMA performance was also included. She released the video with the single as it was banned from MTV. I also highly recommend watching Paris is Burning and Pose. Plus how cute is Dereck?

The word that comes to mind for me with this performance is "crisp". Every detail of the dance, the production, the staging and the costuming is precise and yet doesn't feel stifled.
