I remember the controversy. Madonna was already a star, but this made sure she was known in all corners of the world. The commercial implies that her then up coming video of the this song would be as innocent as a fairytale, involving Madonna revisiting her schooldays memories, dancing in the corridors of a school with children and celebrating Mass in a church. It couldn't be further from the truth. When the real video aired Pepsi company CEOs gasped for air, as the video portrayed a murder by a white man blamed on a black guy, Madonna making out with a black saint in a church, dancing in front of burning crosses and experiencing stigmata! The company officials run to cancel all the airings of their Madonna collaboration, since the catholic church was already threatening to remove all Pepsi vendor machines from their churches (or maybe from everywhere :P). But, of course, Madonna kept the 5 million dollars, she didn't really violate their contract :).

Madonna is a provocateur on par with Marilyn Manson and the like. People often conflate the antics of pop stars today with the statements Madonna’s made throughout her career, particularly with her sexuality. But I’d argue those are Madonna’s duller feats. It’s her need to defy, challenge, and shock, that has constantly set her apart from even contemporary pop stars. Like A Prayer’s imagery is so controversial, even to this day! WAP is baby mush next to it. Look at the contents, she’s made such bold cultural statements.

I don’t think this is really Madonna’s ‘brand’ or at least if it was she shed it quickly. It’s basically the idea of the ‘American Dream’… Dream big, work hard and have talent and you will make it. Her younger self is dreaming about being a star and her adult self is encouraging her to ‘make a wish’. I appreciate that she not only used classic symbols of ‘white America’… the diner, the cool kids in leather and muscle cars of the 50s, but also black culture with churches and gospel music, which is basically the roots of the song (and the history of rock music). This is kind of a nostalgia of an America that never really was. Her actual video showed the America that actually is… violence, racism, religious hypocrisy and police bias, and that’s why she was censored and criticized after it. America wasn’t ready to face the truth of what it really is.

This was pulled off air as pepsi PANICKED after seeing the LIKE A PRAYER VIDEO because they didnt want to be associated with upsetting the religious groups. And they didnt want ANYTHING to do with any BACKLASH she was possibly going to receive from the video. The BIG MISTAKE pepsi made was they EXPECTED Madonna to pay back the 5 million and she said NO ! LOL she laughed ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK.
Who ran autotune/melodyne over the vocals and why? Autotune didnt exist back then. And it doesn't make it sound better. Irons out all personality. And it has introduced artifacts. Just dumb and unnecessary.
I imagine if this is the actual music video that year, Madonna could've been less controversial and won a Grammy or two.

And nobody would have cared about the song and it wouldn't become iconic.
Più buona la coca cola Madonna
Que fome
Maybe the devil in whom she sells her soul, wasn’t fan of Pepsi but coke and in which would make things turn out quite different
Big deal !
In '89, I wonder if Madonna really drank Pepsi. Pop aka soda is a nasty drink.
What is Pepsi?

L'Antonella Di Tonno che da infermiera mi disse anni fa non bere Giulio la coca cola che non ti fa dormire di notte
This is better than the actual video. I always thought like a prayer video just made no sense. Religious mess.

Basically L.A.P. was about a woman, or girl, or just a female having a lucid O.O.B experience like the Catholic saints would, or estacy without the drug named...whatever..mads as per usual, as you would being...just hashed it and vibed it and always sexed it up

The video is not 100% religious, it’s way above your intellect to understand it definitely.
I was around for madonna. To me she just looked italian, not a gorgeous face like angela jolie or Janet jackson. Perhaps because I'm italian I can not see her beauty, I simply see her as an Italian face, not a outstanding beauty. I don't mean to offend anyone or hurt anyone's feelings, I'm just stating my opinion that's what this comment section is for.
