God Control is a masterpiece and this whole album is literally what’s happening around us. Madonna’s career has, in many ways, been warning us of the disaster that’s about to happen if we continue to ignore the signs around us. We are currently perilously close to catastrophe... in America it’s a hair’s breath away from the fall of democracy. I wish Madonna would be recognized for the artistry and brilliance she deserves. I feel her next album should be called Cassandra. She’s seen the future, she’s warned us, but no one’s listened to her and she suffers as a result.

As mirwais said when the album released, it's categorize as "world music". Madonna said in interviews that Madame X it's sorth of continuation of American Life, expanding the message not only for USA, but all leaderships around the world. And for me, as brazilian, she is influenced by all portuguese countries. You can see a brazilian carnival instruments in Faz Gostoso, Portugal fado in Crazy/Killers/extreme occident, and the Batuka by Cape Verde. I'm glad that you like this album, because many people don't understand the message

Madame X is a masterpiece. The best reaction that gives justice to Madonna’s piece of art. Some fans didn’t like it because it wasn’t a poppy, bubblegum album. Madonna has accomplished so much musically and lyrically through the decades. As a hard core Madonna fan, I love all her albums/soundtracks/greatest hits/dance mixed albums. But I have my 5 fav albums & songs: 1. Ray of Light 2. Confessions on a Dance Floor 3. Like A Prayer 4. Erotica 5. Madame X My fav M songs: 1. Paradise (not for me) 2. Easy Ride 3. Frozen 4. Like A Prayer 5. Hang Up The best reaction made of Madame X, it’s yours. I hope you continue covering Madonna’s music legacy. Thank you 😎

Finally enough Love! You made it to Madame X. This is honestly one of Madonna’s best albums, and the one I find my self going to most these days. She was inspired by all the music she was exposed to after moving to Lisbon during the aftermath of 2017 presidential election. So It’s a global album that incorporates so many different styles of music. Like you noted, I love how the album starts off with Medellin, with madonna singing “Ven conmigo, let's take a trip” preluding the musical and cultural journey she is about to take us on. From disco, fado, art pop, arabic ginwa music, house, trap hop, reggae, batuque, a quirky take on classical music, reggaeton and more. They all mix so seamlessly and sound like they belong in the same album. God control is an album highlight I’d like to note. Even tho message is clear, there are a lot of layers in how she conveys it. The way she delivers the song’s opening lines feels like her mouth is forced shut, while in the end she whispers the same verse, all eluding that sometimes it feels like you can’t speak this truth. Ironically lyrically she is saying “everybody knows the damn truth”. Also sonically it’s so layered! The strings swirling so frantically giving it a sense of urgency, the choir lamenting the loss of gun control. All being incorporated into a disco track, now that’s brilliant! Dark ballet is another amazing song. You’re spot on that it was inspired by the story of Joan of ark. But I think what Madonna is saying here is that her story is still relevant today because of the dance or “game” so many minorities have to play in this world to survive. How people outside societal norms are vilified for standing their ground. It’s quirky, dark yet comical and bizarre in the best way possible. Another incredible track is Batuka, which like you mention is inspired by batuque music which originated in Cape Verde. The slave trade has strong roots there and the drums would be taken away by the church from these women as it was viewed as an act of rebellion. In the song madonna is singing with the actual batukadeiras orchestra. And it feels like a rebellion in response to todays issues. It was incredible seeing it live with all the batukaderias on stage, such an female empowerment moment. I could go into so much more detail and talk for hours about all the music, lyrics and tour, but I cant fit that all in here haha. It’s madonna being as bold and experimental as ever and I love it. You have to react to the music videos from this era too. Specifically God control, Dark ballet and Batuka. And in terms of which album to react to next I would love to see your reaction to some early madonna, Perhaps True blue or her first self titled album.

Some backstory for the musical stylings of the album, Madonna lived in Portugal for a few years and was introduced to the local music scene by a friend she had made there. She saw the Batukadeiras perform and recorded them for Batuka and the rest of the album took off from there!

This was so interesting. Your thoughts on Extreme Occident and how you linked the song with her past songs were on point. It's funny because Madonna lived 2 years in Portugal when her son David was scouted to play soccer there, and she wrote that song, and most songs on the album while living there, feeling completely isolated and alone, in a foreign country full of strangers, not knowing the language. She felt so lonely and out of place that she had an identity crisis and started to think about her past, and how she changed so much after Ray of Light, thinking of herself as someone lost looking for her path, and realizing she actually wasn't lost. But most of all about reclaming herself saying "I was happy before, I wasn't lost, I had a personality, I was myself". To me Extreme Occident is Madonna looking at her old self thinking "what happened to you? Why did you change?" To me it's a very nostalgic and tragic song.

Thank you for another entertaining watch! As always your review is thoughtful and insightful. Couldn't agree more on this record, and to me personally the best thing about it is that it comes from an artist ending her fourth (!) decade in music (being a pop artist essentially, no less). I mean, appart from Bjork and perhaps last David Bowie's album, how many artists do we know who came out sounding fresh after so many records? I really think it's a feat on its own. For your next reaction I'd suggest you go all the way back to True blue (1986). You reacted to some of her best works and some if not most of them leaning away from mainstream. Perhaps it would be good if you gave yourself a context what made her the most popular female artist to begin with.

You’re a young brilliant man and you reminded me of myself when I was younger. Your analysis is very open, brilliant, intelligent. Very impressive! I have no idea how old you are but you’re an old soul. This album was crucified by most. Only a few understood this was a global synopsis of beats, sounds, lyrics for the world. It was truly a global album, very experimental but brilliant. Yes a few songs could have been more commercial but I don’t think that was Madonnas focus on this project. It’s very global, intellectual, different. Keep up the great work, I hope your channel grows tremendously but it will be a challenge. You’re smart, handsome, young but not all will get you. Thank you, Eric, for a thoughtful review! It is a bold album on many levels. All the songs are so different from one another, something I appreciate more with every listen. With regard to 'Dark Ballet' and 'God Control,' especially, I like to consider these two songs rhapsodies not only for their respective episodic and free-flowing structure but for their stark shifts in mood and tone. I guess one could say Madonna had her "Queen" moments in this album. 'Madame X' is on parr with 'American Life' in terms of a political statement and sheer enjoyment, but second to 'Ray of Light' in terms of artistic growth and musical breakthrough.

You seem to link a lot of this album to American Life, and i agree. Apart from the themes, both albums were co-produced by Mirwais so there's a musical link. Also, both albums were recorded at a time Madonna has left the US (in AL she was in London, for Madame X she was in Portugal), so she was more analytical of the "american life style" Hopefully you'll do True Blue or Rebel Heart next (both REALLY different).

Please react to Hard Candy and thank you for your thoughtful reactions! Madonna described Madame X as a continuation of American Life so that gives a glimpse of where she is at lyrically. I love how she tackles everything from gun control to human rights. She continues to evolve as an artist with a message and I love Madame X. I think in the years to come people will see what a gem this album truly is. She touched upon so many musical genres from reggaeton to fado to Brazilian funk etc. No one does it like the Queen.

I totally enjoyed your reaction! Hope you keep reacting cause you don't make me feel uncomfortable like other reactors and you introspectively catch the behind of every song, lyric, mix and emotion! Madame X came to my life when my spirit was teaching me and showing me things about all that she sings, opression, violence, all those unnatural bestial wild things about the 'system', if she'd continue with a Madame X Volume 2 i would love it

A love it or hate it album for fans. I personally think its a masterpiece and it sits in the second position of my favourite Madonna albums. It's textured, ambitious and multifaceted... a real genre hopping journey...sounds sublime on vinyl.👌 I applaud her for making the records she wants to rather than a camp disco/dance/pop record that alot of fans seem to beg for, she's a true artist.

This is one Madonna's best albums! Political, bold and unapologetic mixture of different music styles and themes. Very artsy but entertaining. Not always easy to access but you can still feel how she bears her soul. There is a song for every mood. At this stage of her career she could have played it safe but she didn't! I only wish this record and all the amazing videos would have had more recognition that it deserved.

Rebel heart deluxe next. It has 19 songs so you might split it into 2 videos. Imo, it's lyrically Madonna's best work since Ray of light. Also, I recommend listening to Whitney Houston's discography. I'd start with her classic debut and go forward from there. She doesn't have the most lyrically complex music but her voice is otherworldly. I really want your reaction on her 2002 album "just Whitney" because that album was unfairly dismissed by critics just like American Life and Erotica and I want to see someone with a fresh mind like you listen to it. Your reactions are amazing. I love how you connect lyrics to past works of an artist.

Dear Eric, You are something rare and special. Your videos are something quite unique in the context of KZread. Each one isn't full of "I love this" and "I hate that", and "watch me miming along to this song". They come across with a quiet gentleness totally at odds with many other KZreadrs, who seem only to want everyone's attention focused on them, literally screaming "look at me! how great am I?!!" Your thought-provoking analysis, almost always cutting very quickly to the heart of each song or music video, is inspiring and extremely entertaining to watch. I wonder whether you would consider presenting a Q&A video with questions from subscribers, where you might discuss questions like the ones below, so we could get to know you, and therefore the context of your analysis, a bit better. * Where were you born? * What state do you live in? * How old are you? * What gave birth to, and nurtured, your love of music and images? * Do you sing yourself? * What is your education history (school, university, degrees, etc) * What is your desired career path? * What are your life goals? * Where does your altruistic streak come from? * What inspired your obvious love of analysis? * How were you introduced to Madonna? * How were you introduced to Bjork? * How were you introduced to Kylie Minogue?

The great thing about the record is that Madonna mixed her conventional style with everything she had contact with in Portugal. Batuka is related to Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony, the same is true of Funk do Brasil, which was also a colony of Portugal, and that is why the culture of these countries are very connected. Spanish music is also very strong in Portugal, after all they are neighbors of the Spanish. Come Alive has many Arab influences from North Africa, also due to the geographical proximity and cultural exchange with Portugal. And Killing Who Are Partying is "Fado", the most famous style of Portuguese popular music. Crazy is played to the rhythm of the Portuguese accordion. In general, the album is completely influenced by sounds typical of Portuguese-speaking countries.

To me it’s a genius album. It might not be her best best but it’s up there. People say as you get older you make your best albums as you have free reign on everything and not care about the charts etc. Madonna has done everything, she has nothing more to prove.

Now I can’t stop thinking about you enjoying some funk carioca in a sweaty nightclub 😂😂 You pronounced faz gostoso very well btw. Funk used to be (still is) a very marginalized music style in Brazil, so it also fits the album narrative. You should listen to some Brazilian music (been waiting decades to ask for it lol).

I loved your analysis! I have so many thoughts on this album. The album really unfolded its full meaning on the Madame X Tour. I feel like this album is about activism and oppression on a global, cultural and personal level. The many different styles she took for this album originaly grow/ developed under oppression. The very present use of autotune on this album is in my opinion a way to step back from cultural appropriation. She doesn't try to be part of any culture or make it HER style. She gives the style, the culture and the people she worked with the room they needed. It's a respectful step back and an obvious separation from everything else that's going on in the songs. I don't think Killers Who Are Partying is about what she would do if she sees somebody who is oppressed right now because that would be little hypocritical but more about what she would do if she was president. Fado, Batuque, Gnaoua, Reggea, Reggeaton, Disco, Samba, Hip Hop and House beats are all anchored in very specify historical and cultural contexts. They're /were inter alia ways to deal with oppression altough they seem to find their way to the mainstream... so in my opinion it's very clever that Madonna didn't made the step to go fully mainstream. Instead she found other ways to give it a turn. Like in Faz Guztoso when she gave the song a break to bring it back to it's roots. She gives the audience a trip around the world but also a trip into her personal life which was often located in New York City (for example represented by the house beats which are mostly used in the ballroom scene). For me its not an album which was made to sound good but an album that wants to be understood.
