40 years ago I saw this video and realised I am 100% Hetrosexual 🙂 To be more serious she was the first of a kind. Debbie Harry and Kim Wilde always had a load of menacing blokes behind them while Kate Bush seemed like the sort of girl who would try and teach you yoga.

True story- I was 11 years old in 83 and I remember sitting in the back of a Honda with my head back and looking at the stars ( We lived in the country and the stars were bright) and this awesome song was playing on the radio 📻 I have loved Madonna ever since and saw her in concert twice!

I was 12 when this album was popular and literally every girl tried to dress like Madonna after it's release. I remember going out and buying all the bracelets she wore up to her elbows, the black leather booties, the net-like shirt and the huge bow in my hair. I even wore the lace gloves. We all did!!! A really fun time to be a teenager. She is truly an icon.

I was like 12 or 13 when this came out MTV was pretty new. My mom called me into the living room and pointed to tv.I was dressed similar but I didn't know who she was and pissed she dressed so much like me.lol .I listened to David Blair,Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground, stuff like that The Romones I was even a bit goth before it really blew up. Watching now I laugh because I've never changed I'm the way at 50 .& I look like I could be in my 30 s .Be yourself love what you love. There's no shame in that.

@@marcellix I did too, lol .It was funny my mom yelled for me to come in the living room and I didn't know who Madonna was. I listened to older David Bowie,Lou Reed& Velvet Underground, The Ramones. Ya know music like that and Madonna was pop.I was punk. It blew me away I dressed all identical to her and had no idea. My mom didn't like how I was, the way I dressed. Nothing. Years later I learned how much she didn't care or liked me to ended my relationship with you. Now at 50 I'm still the only way I was then.

Her ad libs in the final verse starting at 3:16 are unreal - iconic isn’t a strong enough word - they ARE that time, all wrapped up in a singular vocal take, every emotion I get when I reflect back on those years is RIGHT THERE.

it would have had to be a bar wired with cable TV whose carrier carried MTV (not all of them did) and you would have had to be there at the particular time they aired this. it ain't like it is today, kids.

The synths and bass on this song, how it opens!! It's like all the constellations of stars are swirling around you up in the sky. Fabulous song.

This video and that look, at that time, was beyond unique. Young girls were immediately gravitated and drawn into that asymmetrical vibe never seen before. The t-shirt cut above the belly button was a "NO-NO!" during that time. We didn't dare use f*CK or S-hit back then.

Im a 47 year old woman. I idolized madonna. I idolized my 8 year older sister that got to dress like madonna in the 80s.

She was controversial back then, but looking at what's happening now she was cool and pretty decent. I always wished I could be like her. What girl didn't? She still has it. Wow! I've been a fan since day one. She dances so great the Dance Theater of Harlem wanted her. That's saying a lot! Go baby! She's got more than luck. More like amazing, incredible, long lasting talent. @@bewing77money isn’t everything. she lost her mom at a young age and says she would trade all the fame just to grow up with her mom in her life. she wasn’t always rich and struggled in nyc for some time. in nyc she was raped at knifepoint and robbed multiple times. not to mention the media scrutiny she faced for daring to push the envelope. and i’m saying this as a 22 year old who didn’t even live during that time!! she is a timeless icon

I remember all the lead up from MTV regarding the midnight launch of this video. I was a little kid and made sure I saw this bright video launch. It was so worth it. Thank you Queen Madonna for what you contributed to make my life.

Still watching and listening to those old songs in 2023 . These were my first favorites songs when I was 8-9 y-old 😊I always thought that Madonna was a great dancer . She’s fantastic in every way ❤

She became the most prolific single-female performer sometime in the mid-1980s, and the records she wiped out were set by Connie Francis in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Nobody has come close to her since. That's a Cal Ripken record. She'll hold that record as long as such things are charted.

This video was cutting edge when it came out....the proof is that it holds up almost 40 years later.....it is weird I was in Ala Moana Sears in Honolulu in 84 and this was on one of the tv s in the tv department....I stopped to watch for a moment with some cool/handsome dudes who were watching and talking about how hot Madge was...... and then I moved on....it is weird some of the shit that sticks in ur brain....this whole episode maybe lasted 10 seconds and it is seared into my brain like it took place last week.....

The first time this video aired on MTV, I knew she was something very special.

I was in my 30s when this was a huge hit. It was played at all of the clubs and we danced to it every time that it came on.

I met my wife to be on June 1, 1984 right after I had scraped up enough money for an old ski boat. We named the boat the "Lucky Star" and spent that summer out on the lake with friends, listening to the "Madonna" album non-stop on cassette on a jam box, water-skiing, dancing and drinking as we fell in love. Best summer of my life, and Madonna was the soundtrack to it all. Still listening together 38 years later....What a wonderful time that was...

The eighties were just....AMAZING.

I felt accepted as a teenager from Madonna, she helped me though the toughest time of my life. Thank you Madonna ❤

I was born in 79 so Madonna was part of the soundtrack for my childhood, early adulthood and now that I am in my 40's I still listen. lol .Thank you Madonna for a lifetime of beautiful music. Queen of Pop. 🌹

79 is that all LOL.. You're borderline Millenial by a year. Born in 71, knew Madonna as teenager. Thought I was a tad late!

Hard to believe it's been 40 years since this was released. "Holiday" and "Lucky Star" were the first two Madonna songs the majority of the public ever heard, in late '83 and early '84. I was surprised to find that "Lucky Star" only peaked at #4 on Billboard at the time, because it was SO omnipresent on the radio in '84 that I could have sworn it hit #1. Still, #4 ain't shabby, and apparently it was her first top 5 hit.

Has it? Wow. I was a teenager in junior high school when I heard this song and loved it. Was it in 1981 or 1982 this song? I was in junior high school and high school during the 80’s. In junior high I tried my hardest to dress like Madonna. I even had black lace gloves similar to hers. A female classmate wore them and nicked ‘em. I was annoyed at her. When I asked her she made excuses for not wearing them and said she didn’t know where they were. I knew she was lying.

@@NYCSouthernGirl1 Very true...in late 1983 she broke through. In 1984 she became a star with "Lucky Star" and "Like A Virgin". But it wasn't until 1985 when the string of hits continued, one after the other after the other ("Material Girl", "Dress You Up", "Angel", "Crazy For You", "Into The Groove"--five smash hits in one year!) that it became apparent she was going to be one of the biggest stars of the decade, on a par with Jackson and Prince.

My dentist used to play Madonna's and M. Jackson's videos in the waiting room back in '90s, in order to "chill" her patients. I was just a kid with dentist phobia back then. Every tooth fix and/or extraction were done with these kind of music. I'm not afraid anymore. The best dentist ever!!!!

This was the first 🥇 Madonna song I ever listened to, and certainly not the last, your no#1 Madonna 👍🙏.

The authenticity of her star fire makes this a timeless inspiration! On one of her first tv appearances, she was asked what her dream was and said, “To rule the world!” She indeed wears a crown! Pop royalty! 🌟👑🎀

80’s icon … good time to be young. So much good music!

First time I ever laid eyes on Madonna was this video on MTV and I've been along for the ride ever since. She's never failed to impress me with her talent and vision. She was self-made and ambitious at the very start which lead to her selling 400 million records world-wide over the last 40 years. And I've enjoyed every minute.
