    The most important live performance of her career. The cross, the statistics re HIV, the organ, the crown of thorns, not too mention her vocals. And STILL the neigh sayers come for her. This is her legacy. She is the greatest for a reason. Your response was great :)

    This is one of her most brilliant performances if you ask me. She uses the attention she knows the controversy will bring to shine a light on such an important issue. She then uses religious text in the end to speak the language of the same people you’d expect to be upset by this performance to deliver her point. Almost as if she is telling them to focus their attention and outrage on what matters instead and to practice what they preach… Just pure genius! There is a reason why she’s the queen 👑 and truly incredible reaction as always

    Madonna started her music career as a punk/rock/ska act in the underground scene in New York. No wonder she still keeps that attitude. She is FIRE in anything she does and her works are always multilevel, they have so many layers. She is a genius.

    Yes. She puts on that hard rock/punk rebellious, confrontational swagger from her pre-fame late 70s NYC era roots when she wanted to lash out at her detractors like in her-I Don’t Give A-number from her MDNA tour.

    One of the many reasons there will never be another Madonna, she is the ultimate artist. Other singers may sell more concert tickets or have more streams, but Madonna is the blueprint, the Queen.

    Nothing's stopping them. Most of her material is right at their fingertips, which is why it's so frustrating. But even back in the day people only knew the hits and didn't realize what she was doing on her deep cuts and tours. Oh well.

    I saw this show during her stop in Amsterdam and it was amazing. I remember religious groups being aware of this segment of the show and they were protesting outside of the stadium. There was even a bomb threat that was called in on the day of the show, trying to get it cancelled. But nothing was found and the show went on. This show was in 2006, nearly 25 years into her career, and she's still pissing people off today LOL. Gotta love her! Always pushing boundaries.

    What makes Madonna so impactful is she is fiercely political in her artistry, uses her platform for her activism and advocacy for many worthy causes. She “speaks truth to power” on socio-political issues she cares about. Not many of today’s pop music artists has the guts, consistency and longevity to do this for fear of the backlash and hate that it elicits from bigots who benefit from/perpetuate the social ills/prejudices that Madonna rails against. Appreciate your insightful reaction and for covering her music and artistry.

  • @deanhoxton
    @deanhoxton8 ай бұрын

    to get the full effect of this segment of her show, you just MUST (mandatory 🙂) watch the performance right after this one. She followed this song with another song Forbidden Love, and making another big religiously related statement also. Absolutely timely right this minute with what's been happening in the middle east the past month or so.

    You are so spot on with your analysis. Most Madonna reactions are so off the mark. Yours are always so much fun to watch because of your energy and you actually understand what she is doing. Her whole career has been people bashing her and not understanding because they are so afraid of a woman with a strong opinion. She does not shy away from topics that need attention. She is a true artist . And artists are meant to disturb the peace. When she makes people uncomfortable it really shows there issues and insecurities. And if she can get people talking and maybe even change hearts and minds then she has accomplished so much !

    Madonna Candy Perfume Girl. Full on punk rock performance. First time Madonna played guitar on stage as a pop star. She got her start playing in punk bands as a drummer, guitarist then lead singer. That didnt make her any money so cue in the pop dance music.

    What's so brilliant about this performance is that she's calling out the hypocrisy of conservative religious people. Those who claim to worship Jesus are the very same people who are homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, racist, anti-sex, etc. She's pointing out that Jesus' teachings were about loving one another. That's why she ends the performance with a very specific bible reference which remindes everyone that however you treat human beings, you treat God that way, too. Your next reaction should be Like a Virgin/Like a Prayer from Blond Ambition tour. After pleasing herself sexually she faces God for her "sins". Pure genius.

    I think Madonna is possibly the artist of our generation, maybe aside from Bruce Springsteen or U2 when they were big, who best represents the 60s music genre of protest music. Instead of protesting the war (although she did that too with American Life) she protested the issues that were very important in the 80s… sexism, racism and homophobia, especially during the AIDS epidemic. She rose above just being a ‘pop diva’ into being a complete performance artist, combining dance, theatre, poetry, music and activism into one fierce, undeniable and unrelenting force to make the world a better place and on a more basic level, to entertain us like no one before or since.
