Here at BeatGrade we decided to do our own Top Ten series of great producers. This feature is Madlib.
He is most likely your favorite producer's, favorite producer and he has produced some of the Best beats of all time.
This selection of beats we chose are our take on his most influential beats we feel Madlib has produced. The list was hard to choose, probably one of the toughest list to do next to J Dilla Top's 10. We know you could feature his entire discography and couldn't go wrong he has dropped so many classics.
Madlib has put out some of the most influential records of all time as well, shaping a culture in Hip Hop such as Lootpack's 1999 debut album Soundpieces: Da Antidote ushered in a string of releases on Stones Throw centering on Madlib's production work which would continue for a decade. His first solo work, The Unseen, under the guise of Quasimoto, came in 2000. The album was met with critical acclaim and named by Spin as one of the top 20 albums of the year.
In 2001, Madlib moved away from hip hop music and began a series of releases from Yesterdays New Quintet, a jazz-based, hip hop and electronic-influenced quintet made up of alter-egos or fictional musicians played by Madlib. Over the next several years, through several record releases on one of the biggest independent record labels Stones Throw Records and other labels, the growing number of pseudonyms and fictional players came to be known as Yesterdays Universe. Madlib was later invited to remix tracks from the Blue Note Records archive in 2003, which he released as Shades of Blue. In addition to the remixes, the album contained newly recorded interpretations of Blue Note originals, many of which were credited to members of Yesterdays New Quintet. Beginning with the 2007 album The Funky Side of Life by Yesterdays New Quintet spin-off group Sound Directions, the Yesterdays Universe also began incorporating additional session musicians who were not pseudonyms of Madlib.
Returning to hip hop music in 2003, Madlib announced two collaborative projects. He joined hip hop producer J Dilla in a duo known as Jaylib, which released Champion Sound. Madlib then collaborated with rapper MF DOOM, known together as Madvillain. Their 2004 album Madvillainy was highly anticipated and well-received, topping many critics' year-end lists. He also went on to collab with J Dilla after the two had worked with mutual artists and had a great amount of respect for each other. The album Jaylib was released on Stones Throw Records to critical acclaim and one of the first albums to announce Dilla as not only a producer but a rapper as well.
The 2005 Quasimoto album The Further Adventures of Lord Quas met with warm reception[9] and continued the Quasimoto tradition of using vocal samples from Melvin Van Peebles, who is credited on the album liner notes as a collaborator. Throughout the rest of the decade Madlib continued to release jazz material simultaneously with his hip hop work: Perseverance with Percee P, Liberation with Talib Kweli, Sujinho with Ivan Conti of Azymuth, his own instrumental hip hop series Beat Konducta, In Search of Stoney Jackson with Strong Arm Steady, Guilty Simpson, and production work for artists such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Kanye West, Erykah Badu, De La Soul, Freddie Gibbs and even now worked with mainstream artist such as Kendrick Lamar. This is Madlib Invazion.

Madlib catalog is too big to choose 10. Simple fact is he’s a musical genius. I honestly think he’s in the top 5 of any hip hop producer that ever lived.

@@assass.oebeeseo I'd debate some his best in terms of chops and sample usage. He wasnt afraid to mix it abit crazy too. Kept the original duophonic type mixes of some of the samples which I love to hear, though the duophonic/hard pan sound is very love it or hate it. Also crazy thing with drive in specifically is the part he sampled is on the fade out, so he must've had to gain stage alot of the chops so they all sounded the same volume, which for the amount of chops in that sound is great work.

@@assass.oebeeseo Yeah, they redid the vocal mix in the re-release but I prefer the original mix of the beats. But yeah, madlibs talent shines through majorly on that album.

J Dilla and Madlib both samples the same song: Diana in the Autumn Wind by Gap Magione but used the first part of the song while Dilla used the motif
Lootpacks debut album ‘Soundpieces:Da Antidote’ is still my favourite madlib produced album & one of,if not my favourite production on ANY album of any style of music I’ve ever heard.Considering the amount of bona fide modern masterpieces this man has been the beatsmith for is no small praise!

Yeah that beats originally from Beat Konducta in India. Mos def kills that beat though, hes always got perfect bars for madlib beats.
You should have heard his early, EARLY joints when he was still shopping labels with Jack, Romes and, believe it or not, Kankick. He been way ahead of this time since '92 (when I first met him and the crew).

from the top of my head quasimoto - astronaut, unseen, the front and seasons jaylib - heavy madvillain - monkey suite, accordion, meat grinder, eye freddie gibbs - robes, uno, crime pays, education, 2nd half of fake names lootpack - whenimondemic chrome children - all i know, raw heat, no $ no toke, chrome dreams dudley purkins - seperate ways oh no - wtf talib - soon the new day (og beat not the one with nora jones) and these are all just collabs let alone all the unnamed beats on raw cakes he released over the years making up a top 10 for this man seems pretty much impossible

I wish I could find the full version of Defari - Say It Twice (Madlib remix). That would go in my top ten. But, so far only found the shorter version from The Madlib Remixes 1997-2007 (J Rocc Mixtape).
I like album Mad Neighbor, especially "Get Money" "Birds".
Microphone Mathematics seems like a major nod to Premo & Pete Rock from Madlib the Bad Kid & carries through to all the Jazz - Funk - Soul - World Music flavours that are drawn on, put in the pot and served with extra unseen seasoning.... also there’s a few beats on Bandana that have more life Money Folder surely

Nah man c'mon... I don't think anything from Bandana tops Money Folder. I think it's poor taste to suggest otherwise. And I'm not a rigid old head or anything... I just don't rate Bandana that highly. Microphone Mathematics is sick though. 'Closer' is a brilliant spin on the Doris sample too...
I was expecting at least one track from Percee P's "Perseverance" album. So many 🔥 beats on that.

Half the battle with being a great beat maker is having a great ear. Madlib has that down. No one better than him right now. However, Dilla had the rhythm and the groove. No one did it like Dilla. Madlib will make you nod your head, but Dilla will make you move your feet.

anything and everything from madvillainy, yes money folder rules but i prefer curls or figaro of rhinestone cowboy to be honest.
Should have added "Solitude" produced for Dudley Perkins (Declaime). But you can't really make a top 10 list for Madlib. So many good joints it's impossible to list them.
