I gotta say, I'm really glad you shared the part with Spoon. It's really important to see that hatching does occasionally have its dark sides, and to know the importance of culling when nessesary. RIP Spoon, you may have only been on our planet a short while, but you helped educate a lot of people.

I liked how naturally she talked about culling when needed, many would probably want to try keep the snake alive because it feels bad and wrong to kill without thinking about just causing more suffering.

@@teijaflink2226 I love your comment. I had to euthanize a fish of mine because she had a tumour and couldn’t eat anymore. Although how tough it was and how much it affected me if I hadn’t done it she would’ve died anyways, just with more suffering.

I completely agree, we almost had to euthanize one of my goats, due to a completely snapped leg. We reconsidered it, and he’s fine now, we just needed to have his bandages more often changed out, and we had to make our goat pen more safe.- Tl;dr: I almost had to euthanize a goat and was too dumb to make my pen safe

@@77rhinos86 No, putting a living animal to freeze to death in a cold environment is cruel and painful, as ice crystals slowly form in the blood. The most effective way to cull is, unfortunately, to crush the head quickly.

So cool to see new babies!!! Spoon baby may have had a mutation in the Sox9 gene. Mutations in this gene affects the development of cartilage which can particularly affect lower jaw development, as well as genitourinary malformations. So this might explain what you saw in the spoon baby, though I don’t know if this is common in snakes

@@Lazarus7000 we’re both descended from a common ancestor, and we’re both tetrapods and amniotes. Such important things like developmental genes, I wouldn’t imagine they’d disappear or appear very often. The SOX9 gene is present in snakes, but I’m not a geneticist so I couldn’t tell you what all it did developmentally.

In developmental biology, various animals (including flatworms, fish, salamanders, and chickens) are used to study how genes influence and shape development, even in humans because of how conserved these genes are.

I really appreciate you guys leaving in the losses and showing the reality of breeding reptiles/just animals in general. Its educational and reminds people that deformaties are just a natural part of life that sometimes unfortunately happen. Some you can live with, some you can't and it's important to remember that you can try your best and even do everything right but unfortunate situations such as the spoon baby will still happen beyond anyone's control.

Dear Emily, thank you for the how to free a snake from a glue trap vid, it's going to come in handy right away. Today at work, a co-worker told my husband that she had a problem with mice and had set out traps, glue traps unfortunately, and had caught more than a mouse on one. There was also a baby snake. So armed with your video, hubby is going to bring it home after work and we're going to save it. The reason she told him about it is that a few months ago he had rescued a baby black rat snake from work and brought it home. We named him Sam and he is so calm and easy going and he eats frozen thawed mice like he came up with the idea. I did check and it is legal to keep native rat snakes here, and we adore him.

Aw, poor little "Spoon." I almost audibly gasped and my jaw certainly dropped when "Spoon" moved 😰That's heart-breaking, but also _super_ fascinating. Are you going to preserve his body for science? I don't think they'll be able to preserve the body even if they wanted to. one of their videos on culling is that in order to humanely cull them, you have to crush the head so it ends quickly. and it's more humane than waiting for the baby to pass naturally to preserve it.

I'm having a rough time at the moment, but the cuteness of baby noodles hatching is really making me forgetting my problems for a short time. Thank you and rest in peace little spoon. Edit: I almost forgot that this is one of the nicest communities on KZread, thank you for your friendly words kind strangers.

Poor Spoon! Thank goodness he's no longer suffering. The three babies are sooooo cute! They're so curious and confused.

I love how casually you talked about culling, since i had to do that with one of my ducklings that had a really crossed beak and it didn't have one leg, i didn't want to cause more suffering for it, also it had a mutation that causes a beautiful lavendar color, so i think that was part of the reason it didn't develop fully. All of its siblings were a dark brown color, it was quite sad to cull it.

For anyone curious about how the sorts of things like the baby hog happen, here's my best (simplified) explanation. Disclaimer, my degree is in *human* cell and molecular biology. If you or someone you've loved had a difficult situation surrounding a pregnancy ending, some parts of this explanation might bring up difficult memories. When an animal is developing, we all start out as one cell, which splits into two, then four, then eight, and so on until we eventually become us! This is a big, long, complicated process. As those first view cells are figuring out what type of mature cell they'll become (There's a lot of them!), they have a bunch of genes that contain "recipes" to make proteins. There are thousands if not millions of proteins, with just as many jobs, like starting to change the type of cell. Others are like name tags that the cell wears so the cells around it know what it does and where it should go. When there's a problem with the way the cell makes the protein, or a problem with the gene's "recipe," the cell can't do whatever job that protein was supposed to help it with. And then, if the cell needs to make other cells and teach them how to do that job, it teaches them wrong. The main jobs for a cell when an animal is growing in an egg or womb are to figure out two things: What it should be, and where it should be. The proteins answer this question for a cell. If there's a problem like the one this hognose had, the cell probably said, "What should I be and where do I go?" and the protein said, "You're a head, and you go on the neck!" but the protein didn't say where on the neck, or how, so the head ended up turned to the side. Sometimes it happens another way; the cell knows it should be a brain, but wants to make sure it's in the right place. It looks at the name tag of the cell next to it and sees it's at the front of the neck where it should be, so it stays and grows. But, the other cell made its nametag wrong so it gave the wrong directions and the pre-brain cell should've gone a bit farther. And then, all the other cells just have to try and do their best with that mistake and sometimes they do OK and you get things like spina bifida (a condition where the spinal cord doesn't completely close, and can range from so mild you don't know you have it to severely disabling). Sometimes they do a lot worse and you get something like gastroschisis (kids reading this, please don't look up pictures of that without talking to your parents) where your stomach and other organs form outside of the belly.

Off topic from Snakes, but my aunt actual did studies with frogs about that. They'd take developing tadpoles and swap the back and front limb buds. If it was before X weeks, then the frogs would develop as normal because the limb buds hadn't actually specified enough to know if they were front limbs or back limbs. But after X weeks the tadpoles would develop into frogs with swapped legs. multicellular development is utterly fascinating. (although I imagine the frogs aren't to pleased with the lab students.)

This is fascinating and a great explanation. I'm unfortunately slightly confused still bc we were looking at its tail somehow, but the lower jaw hadn't formed. Although someone else said mutations in a specific gene might affect the formation of cartilage, which makes sense why that would be so bad in snakes (or perhaps multiple genes/mutations) since their jaws are connected by cartilage. I'm curious whether epigenetics or just random mutation would be more likely.

Thank you for updates on the unfortunate one, really appreciate it. LOL looking at dad after seeing the wee young ones is quite a shock :) they really are called 'giant' for a very good reason!

We live in OK and found a little ring neck in our yard! He had the most beautiful belly. My kids were super excited. And once he realized we weren’t a threat he didn’t mind being handled. They each took a turn and we released him back where we found him. Because of this channel we aren’t afraid and are comfortable with so many different critters!

Both of you are lucky. I’ve found a bunch but only ever garter snakes and they just musk all over you. Well, Technically I haven’t found any. My mom, who hates snakes, found ever single one. I’m always looking for them, but i’ve never found them. But i at least get to sometimes catch them and save them from my mothers snake wrath or relocate them away from the potential danger of my dogs when they’re found in my backyard.

The baby hogs are so darn cute! They're one of my favorite species of snake. Also seeing the underdeveloped baby was very interesting and I really appreciate you guys showing it! Breeding isn't always perfect, and seeing the deformities is just pretty interesting to me. I want to become a reptile breeder and I'm currently majoring in wildlife science, so seeing dissection stuff is really interesting to me!

Out of curiosity, how do you go about humanely culling an underdeveloped baby in this scenario? What's the process?

I've always liked snakes since, many years ago, at a shopping mall pet store that would doubtless give Ed & Emily fits of apoplexy, some nice people were "demonstrating" the snakes, and I was given the opportunity to hold a large-ish constrictor snake, and I discovered the fascinating way snakes move and feel, and how pleasant their dispositions can be. One of the things these people were impressing upon the audience was that snakes were emphatically _not_ slimy. So I sorta did a double-take when Ed declared a snake slimy, of course everything is slimy upon birth whether it comes from an egg or another creature.

Poor Spoon. I'm glad they didn't suffer long. I'm also glad that you showed the reality of breeding.

because snakes have such a low oxygen requirement, most methods of culling would be inhumane because their brain stays alive for longer than a mammal would. the most humane euthanasia method is to crush the snake's head, so you're destroying the brain so they cannot feel any pain.

I wonder if they're so well behaved because they evolved on Madagascar. Aren't there like no predators on Madagascar? I think it's just foosas? Maybe stuff like smaller animals would eat a baby snake too, but island habitats can be a little weird Edit: I did a little research and there appears to be like 10 "big" predators on Madagascar, just not big enough to hunt a lemur. Mostly mongooses, which have a reputation for being snake eaters, so maybe it's not so much a lack of predators as it is a lack of BIG predators

The Fossa eats lemurs, so it could probably handle a young Madagascar Giant Hognose. But yeah, there's not really many big predators in Madagascar (the Fossa is the biggest mammalian carnivore found there), it is only a little island after all.

It's very interesting what happens during development where 3/4 turned out completely perfect while one that had the same conditions during incubation just didn't develop correctly. Thank you for showing it though! I've always been curious for what the culls look like and what determines a definite cull.
