The intro killed me. I bought one to feed to my beardy and she wanted nothing to do with it so now what? It became "her pet". She's passed on now and I'm still taking care of her hisser. LOL

They're not the greatest feeders. Their tibia has sharp spikes and raw they have a neurotoxin that numbs the mouth. They can struggle and their large size plus those tibia spikes means their thrashing can hurt creatures bigger than themselves. They can be okay if you only feed the nymphs from an active breeding colony but dubias are better all around IMO.

I had 2 giant madagascan hissing roaches as a kid and they were gifted to me by a large pet store whose staff had found them running around when they did a re-fit and they were BIG! the owner said that they must have been living off spilt food from the self serve pet food bins, and that they hadn't stocked or sold them for over 2 years so they were "enterprising wee buggers" (shop owners words!) Anyway they were gifted to me along with a plastic terrarium to keep them in. He said because they had lived so long in his shop he didnt have the heart to feed them to something or get rid of them in any other way and i was lucky enough to be gifted guardianship of Oscar and Jarvis Cockeroach, as i named them! Brilliant pets for a kid, no problem being handled, only the got so fine with being handled that they wouldn't hiss much after a while as they didn't feel threatened, the hiss is after all a defence mechanism! But easy and fun to keep. Bit of fruit and access to water and a bit of sunlight and they lived another 18 months and 2 years. We never actually knew how old they were as they had been living "wild" in the pet shop for at least 2 years. Just shows how resilient the wee beasties really are! And how crap the petshop owners cleaners were, haha

I'm actually terrified of roachs (specifically the american house roaches that tend to get huge down here in the south), I do find these hissers nice but that fear/disgust keeps me from getting too attached. Which is good sense I'm breeding a colony as food for my bearded dragon.

Me me me!! I would love a couple hissing cockroaches! Do I have to have springtails as well? They terrify me (springtails that is). I know what you mean about the feeds vs pets thing. I got dubias as feeders and it near breaks my heart to actually USE them as feeders. I have to prekill them so I know they won't suffer. I'm a softy. I also have my non-feeder pet ones. 😂 We've wanted MHCs for more than a decade, ever since my now 15 year old (pursuing zoology) was only three and she got to hold one at an exotics demo, but we lived in Canada and it is illegal to have them as pets, only "zoos" could import them. It thrills me to think we could have them here, alongside such cool things like our mantids, phasmids, and tarantulas. 😍 Love your calm manner with your critters, working towards that too. Found you from JoJo's Exo Cavern unboxing video... so glad I did! ❤️
