    I just love this episode of television so much. I felt that Mad Men was one of those very few television shows that didn't lose its way, and really stuck the landing. But its pinnacle was here, in this perfect middle episode of the middle season of the series, the story's emotional heart. One thing I really appreciate about Mad Men is that what characters say is never the whole story, and certainly not a truth that the writers are trying to convey. "That's what the money is for!" is such a great line, but it tells you more about Don, about the nature of the business, about Peggy's frustration with the world that segregates professional accomplishment from personal acknowledgement. To Don, Peggy is still a child begging for a pat on the head, and it's true. But we have to remember that Don is also a child that grew up without any pats on the head, and resents it when anyone else acts entitled to them. Personally, I consider it more mature to accept that we all could do with one of those from our bosses, our mentors, our loved ones from time to time. Don's anger about it is really just him taking his own neglected childhood out on Peggy. Meanwhile, Peggy is blaming Don for her own unwillingness to admit she's just not interested in this boy she's been dating. Don has a cloud hanging over his had, but so does Peggy, and I think she can sense it, the assembled forces of conformity waiting to spring the marriage trap. She feels so guilty for not wanting what everyone insists she should want that she's in denial about it. Just like Don's phone call, she's been making excuse after excuse to avoid that dinner, and doesn't even realize it. And so she's blaming Don. What really makes this episode so tender and moving is that where the show goes from there, pushing them both past their anger and blame to find they're both comrades, both outsiders in a world where no one knows them. No one else wants to know them. Everyone around them has their own agenda, and a designated place for Don and Peggy to fit into that agenda. And everyone's shocked when Don and Peggy don't fit into their expectations. Much as I agree with Don's secretary that he treated her abominably, she's no different from Peggy's boyfriend, or Duck, men who have their own idea of who Peggy is supposed to be, and are horrified she doesn't fit the role. The episode lets them open up to one another about their feelings of alienation, not directly, but it's clear to both of them that they're kindred spirits. In their overpowering loneliness, they've found one another. Mad Men is about the gap between who the world expects these characters to be, and who they really are. It's only when they're stripped of their facades, and stand naked in front of one another, that they can find compassion for each other, as well as themselves. That's where this show takes us.

    The last line in the show is also telling. As Peggy is leaving Don's office the next morning she asks him if he wants the door to be kept open or closed and he says he'd like it open. I don't think it's a stretch to say that this is a metaphor for their relationship and how he would like for his relationship with Peggy to have a more open dialogue as they move into a new chapter.

    This is true friendship. I don't quite understand why romantic love gets all the accolades in our silly society. It probably has to do with sex since our silly society is also unhealthily obsessed with sex. Yet true friendship can be just as resonant, deep and abiding as romantic love. In fact, it can mean even more in more varied circumstances.

    I remember when I rewatched the series and realized that the suitcase is probably the best episode. Such an amazing turning point in both their lives, portrayed in such a compellingly realistic way yet at the same time it's incredibly symbolic and poetic. The best way to describe this show is that it truly transports you to the lives and environment of its characters.

    I love the GoT putdown. Mad Men truly is a pure character development show and a goddamn masterpiece at that. Something GoT tried in the beginning and went off the rails into a Micheal Bay movie. Mad Men stuck it out the whole way through. You don't see one gun fight, explosion or any real physical violence aside from Pete getting his ass kicked and Don punching someone in a bar. It's wondering what the character's motives and desires are that shape each scene and the interaction so beautifully. Each episode scrapes away a little more and more and it is so well done.

    I actually didn’t like the game of thrones put down and I think it’s very unfair. Game of thrones is a far more ambitious show and was doing more with its story in every way. Yes they made mistakes and messed some characters are by the end, but game of thrones is far tougher to pull off then mad men. With all that being said I absolutely love mad men and think it’s a masterpiece in storytelling (easily a top ten show ever made) but game of thrones is still even better than mad men ever thought about being 🤷‍♂️game of thrones is the second best show ever made for me. Only show that’s above is the wire

I grew to love all of the characters as they were brilliantly played by all of the actors but the relationship between Peggy and Don was ever changing particularly as Peggy matured and her role of the agency became more intricate. Elizabeth Moss and John Hamm brought real life to the Peggy and Don characters in this very poignant and moving scene.

    I thought it was quite symbolic as she was carrying a suitcase. To me, Anna carrying a suitcase represented the creative block Don was unable to break due to subconsciously being distracted from what really mattered. His inevitable grief was the one thing he couldn't run away from, making his acceptance all the more bittersweet.

    I rewatch Mad Men sometimes only to get the catharsis of this episode. Great video! I only disagree with the "bad luck" counter. Peggy's is not bad luck, it is her conscious choice to stay with Don, at work, instead of go to Mark. This is her domain. This is what is important to her. This is the place where Don and Peggy understand eachother perfectly, and that, for both of them, is both more alluring than most other things and a haven from the world. Mark knows it, too - it has nothing to do with bad luck, Peggy is making a choice here.

    It must be pointed out that Don's egocentric ways brings about two suicides in this series. If thats not toxic I got a bridge to sell ya. It's unfortunate that for many if not most of us in order to truly move forward ontologically ,spiritually if you must, we have to hit rock bottom hard enough to shatter our pride so completely that when we go back to pick up the pieces we are able to clearly see what a false facade, what a stumbling block, what a set of blinders it was. Don doesn't quite reach that point here. Remember Lane's suicide is still ahead.

  • @rottensquid

    @rottensquid

    8 ай бұрын

    I don't know if I'd call Don egocentric, far from it. He's just a really broken guy, and broken people can be really, really horrible. The show demands we hold him accountable without losing our compassion for him. The end of this season was a jumping off point for a lot of viewers, because it was so frustrating to see Don fall back into his facade of happily married man, without really doing the work. Of course it all crashes down. But Don doesn't truly hit bottom till the final episode, after he's run and run and run so far that he's hit the end of the world. It's only when he has nowhere left to go that he truly takes responsibility for what he's done, accepts what he is, and manages to find compassion for himself, rather than trying to hide in another facade. Regarding Lane, I totally agree that Don was horrible to him, but we have to remember that he and Lane were both victims of the same world of heartless expectations. It clearly didn't occur to Don that Lane wasn't prepared to face ultimate failure. For Don, that's a familiar place. But for some, rock bottom lies below death. I'd say that Lane's death wasn't really Don's fault, because Lane had made his own bed, except that I personally believe we do bear some responsibility to one another, to help when people can't help themselves. That's kinda what civilization is for, right? Of course, Don wouldn't believe that, would he? Look at his life. Who ever had his back when he needed it? As much a heel and a horrible person Don was to Lane, his brother, Sal Romano, and all his lovers, we also have to remember the severe emotional handicap he's coping with. He doesn't actually know how to care for people. That's something we're supposed to learn from our families. But the person he treats the worst in the show is himself. When he's not beating himself up, he's stuffing it all down so he doesn't have to face what kind of person he is, and passing on his own neglect to the people around him, giving them the care and compassion he's always been accustomed to: none.

    The show IS a masterpiece... when you edit it down and show clips.... But what it also is is really slow, with many plot holes and some bad as well as great writing... It drags on as well.....

    this episode was always my favorite too!! When she said "you never say thank you!" & he said, "that's what the money's for!!" I laugh every time I hear it! It shows a slight difference between women & men. I think some women do like to hear thank you even when they know the money sends a similar message while men believe the money is enough. It really is a beautiful episode!!

    Lol on the set guy. Segram's was on top not the Crown on old bottles of CR, it's also significantly better whisky than the Diageo swill it is now. If you wanna try original recipe Crown Royal you need to try their Limited Edition as sold in Canada. Rye/barley mash instead of 99 percent corn
