Don is so brutal but he's not lying. It's interesting how early in the series Pete values power over friends because he's low on the tier of professionals. However later on as he progresses and gains more power, he slowly realizes how important having friends really is.

Don isn't being brutal at all. He keeps signalling Pete to stop, and the signals go right over Pete's head. First, he apologizes for Pete's bad manners in front of them both. Pete doesn't get the message. "The future Mrs. Pete Campbell is a very lucky woman." An appeal to morality. Again, Pete doesn't understand the point Don is making. "I bet the whole world looks like one big brassiere strap waiting to be snapped." Now he's straight-up calling Pete immature, and again Pete doesn't understand or care. Pete missed three VERY strong hints from Don, so Don gave up on subtlety and laid it out very directly. Don just discovered the hard way that Pete doesn't care about rules of etiquette, right and wrong, or acting mature, so instead he focuses on the one thing Pete does seem to care about: money and advancement. Hints hadn't worked, so Don made it so crystal clear that even Pete could get the message. BTW, if you think this is brutal, you haven't experienced brutal yet. Even at the very end, Don was still measured and firm. He could have delivered a _much_ more aggressive dressing-down. I've gotten and given some of those talks myself. Sadly, in the era of HR, these days you're better off writing someone up and permanently damaging their career, rather than giving them a chance to clean up their act. Managers are slowly turning from coaches into lawyers.

Great point. I also like how direct it is. A lot of people tip toe when they give advice or critique a person. It gives that person the opportunity to create a defense for themselves in their minds. Here Don was direct and didn't pull any punches and Pete was taken completely aback, no time to make an excuse, just took it and let it sink in. You could tell it stung and stuck with him. Sure when he leaves he initially is spiteful, like many of us would be. But the desire to be spiteful is just an example of how impactful this type of moment can be. There is no forgetting it, no excuses, no ability to wipe it a way or brush it off. Instead your left with one option and that's what you do with it going forward.

My Dad and I went to a diner one time and one waitress was working the entire cafe. On her first or second day. The table full of guys across from us gave her grief about being slow and mixing up their order. My Dad told her, “It gets easier, we are in no rush.” He left her a decent tip and gave her more encouragement as we left. But after we left he looked at me and said, “You can tell a lot about a man by how he treats a bad waitress or an old dog.” I think Don would agree.

@@BeardsleyMark Dude, let me tell you something okay? As a middle aged man who remembers a different time in America (in fact the time of this show) I disagree with you. I LOVE animals and can just barely tolerate humans. Why? Because of they way they treat you these days. If you show an animal love and kindness you will get that in return. Do that with people and more than half will either hurt you or take advantage of you seeing you as fit for the taking. Now, as for servers in diners, restaurants, etc. I expect them to do their JOB. Period full stop. I have always done excellent work in MY profession (and still got grief from the asshole management) and I expect nothing less than others in theirs no matter what they do for a living. If servers are slow and mess up orders, they are not doing their job. As for tips, they are a gratuity. Gratuity means 'gratitude' for excellent service. I don't care if owners pay them less than minimum because its somehow now 'expected' that you tip no matter how lousy the service. I'm old school. I've been known for literally leaving 2 pennies when I get really lousy service and conversely, I've been known to leave as much as 50% for outstanding service.

I like how Peggy's character journey started right here with being a combination of helpful, but willing to say what was on her mind despite it being her first day. She has a lot of ups and downs, but these two traits really do help define her right out of the gate. And Don respecting what she said instead of humoring Pete also is the start of his relationship with Peggy, which establishes a nice thread for a good chuck of the series: it doesn't matter that Peggy's a woman; she's helpful, creative, and willing to stand up for herself while supporting Don, and that counts for a lot with Don.

This is such a fantastic scene. Wow. I noticed a theme in the show where we see an older generation trying to give guidance to a younger generation, like how Joan gives Peggy advice (despite it being unhelpful for how the world would eventually change for women and Peggy), but this scene above really does show at the beginning of the show Don trying to help Pete, but Pete takes it as a way to incite rivalry with Draper and always be jealous of what he has. In this scene, you see don doesn’t care if Pete one day gets his job; he tells him something honest that will make him more successful. Draper finds Pete annoying, but he tries to help him and mentor him from the start.

He drank at the bar every night with his cronies, scheming his way to up the corporate ladder (large utility company), came home angry drunk every night (for whatever he felt his shortcomings were in life), took most of it out on me with leather belt. Cheated on my mom constantly, she finally couldn't take it any more left with me when I was 15, I haven't seen him since, it's been 44 years now. My sister stayed in touch with him, she called me the other day, my dad is on hospice care, late stage Parkinson's. He did manage to make to VP of that company, retired with lots of money, his goal I guess achieved. But was it worth not having the love of your only son and not having by your side at the last? I let go of my hate long ago, turning it into sadness for him, for what all he missed of my life. I have a great life and family. The lesson I learned from him....to be the opposite of him. It has served me well. This show reminds of that time and him, and the many men like him....are they all dying alone without their children or grandchildren by their sides?...was it worth it?....

Career wise, she starts out incredible at her job, and gets better and better with better and better results and rewards. Good arc in that manner. But besides the loving relationship with her son, her personal life never really grows. She doesn't seem to have friends, her relationship with her mother is 😬, she leaves her horrible husband and replaces him eventually with more work, just work. She seems to have wanted to be a wife and mother, yet her life ends up almost totally being about her career. It is a great, entertaining story. But Don, Pete, and Peggy, (even Roger) all eventually got what they wanted AND needed. They all grew into that life. Joan got a lot, but was it what she really wanted or really needed? Did Joan really change and grow, or just adapt well to disappointment after disappointment? The other four, I feel went on to happy, fulfilling lives. This to me was a great way to set the tone between Don and Pete. Don was the senior. He was wise and understood that you can't grow a reputation like Pete is cultivating in a work place because believe it or not those women he's insulting really were the ones who ran the place. They set the appointments, they covered for dudes doing shady shit. They had all the real power really. These women could ruin marriages with the shit they've seen/ heard/ help cover. And you want them to like you and be on their side. Especially peggie because she had potential that she grew to realize. Like you have to be aware of what you are saying and who you are saying it to. Pete was always a smaller picture kind of guy. Don was telling like dude use your big brain power. I liked how son was basically like don't be a scumbag. Because down the line it will only hurt you.

In those days, cracking open adoption records was a VERY difficult process. Pete would probably have had that meeting in the 80s or 90s, near retirement, and it probably wouldn't have affected him very much. I don't think he had enough empathy or sense of personal responsibility that his conscience would be bothered. For a long list of reasons, Pete probably got a fairly successful life and more or less escaped the consequences of his being Pete Campbell.

  • @daughterofolaf

@@theprogram863 It could not possibly have been THAT difficult because this happened in my family twice over and both of them were born around the same time Pete and Peggy’s kid was born. Maybe it wasn’t easy but in no way was it such a challenge that it deterred either of them from showing up on the doorstep. And I have no doubt Pete is unaffected by the whole thing. My point is that TRUDY would not be okay with it no matter how old they would be when this event is revealed. 🤣

@@genxx2724 Well there were no huge repercussions because the spouse already knew about the kids who were adopted away. Like in the show, when that kid comes knocking on Peggy’s door, there won’t likely be any huge production because she already told what’s-his-name about it. Oh, although if they have kids together then that could get a little dramatic. Haha.

Poignant a fly is portrayed stuck in the light fixture. Perfect analogy for Pete who always seemed to be chasing after bright shiny things, all the while trapped by his own self serving ambitions to escape harsh realities he never could navigate.
