You're not alone in wondering how the movie was shot. Director Steven Soderberg said this: " I just watched Mad Max: Fury Road again last week, and I tell you I couldn’t direct 30 seconds of that. ... I don’t understand how [George Miller] does that, I really don’t, and it’s my job to understand it. I don’t understand two things: I don’t understand how they’re not still shooting that film, and I don’t understand how hundreds of people aren’t dead.”

You got to see Road Warrior. There is a scene where a stuntman goes flying through the air. That was an accident and the stuntman broke his leg. And they decided to put that in the film.
What's so cool about this movie is that both the director and cinematographer were in their 70s. And they just sent every other action director back to school with one movie.

What’s cool is that George Miller got John Seale to come out of retirement to shoot the film.
CGI vs Practical FX: So obviously Furiosa’s arm was CG. The vehicles were practical. The flames and explosions were also practical. The sandstorm was CG. The motorcycle stunts were real, the polecats were Cirque de Soleil performers. (Real stunts). The People-eater’s nose might have been digital but his swollen elephant feet were makeup and prosthetics. All those pulleys and machinery that the war boys were operating were real but there was a fair amount of green screen work as well. The giant water spigots might have been digital on top of green screen, with just the little cut-out set for Imorten Joe. They really did a masterful job of blending techniques and technologies. And I’m sure this has already been pointed out, but the actor who played Imorten Joe in this one played the boss villain, “Toe Cutter” in the original Mad Max, rhe first of the Mad Max/Road Warrior franchise.
Mad Max: The Road Warrior is a classic with the original Max Mel Gibson , 3 movies were made with him. He is the OG !
Abby's facial reactions are the best.

All practical effects except: The Sandstorm, the colour grading and enhancement of some of the explosions and backgrounds. I think this movie will stand as one of the masterworks in effects, next to The Thing, An American Werewolf in London, Jurassic Park, Avatar, Who framed Roger Rabbit, Tron, Jason and the Argonauts, Star Wars, London after Midnight and King Kong. It is also a masterwork in storytelling and characterisation. [edit] Yes, the guitar and the steering wheel towards the end were cgi, too. There were some touch ups here and there. I think Immortan Joe needed the oxygen for his sickness and Rictus had chemicals to juice him up in his tanks. An example of the superb storytelling, does it really matter why they use it? No, but it makes them scarier.

There was a lot of CGI enhancements to the landscape, by putting in rocks and hills and all that stuff.
Watch original MM1 which is set in a dystopian society not apocalyptic. Made on a budget of $200,000 became one of the highest grossing independent film of that time.
If memory serves, they brought in performers from Cirque du Soleil for the pole cats.
The cars and the explosions are pretty much all real. But they were filmed separately and then later edited together to be right next to each other.
For us older genx who grew up during the cold war, this is how we thought the future would be, not this dystopian future we have now lol. I never thought I'd live past twenty four. I highly recommend watching the others
Watching a flick with Abbey and Boo....and no one else is here. Just us. Right? 😎 Oh, shut up people....let the crazy old guy have a moment 😘
I love your reactions Abby! You are so lovable and I’m glad you are part of this channel. Mad Max: Fury Road was actually nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won six for best Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. According to the director, George Miller, 90% of the effects in the film were achieved practically. Both the Doof Wagon and Doof Warrior’s guitar were fully functional. None of that was CGI, even when the guitar shoots fire. Over 150 stunt performers were utilized for this film, some of whom were from Cirque du Soleil. Mad Max has been highly influential in the realm of post-apocalyptic fiction. The first three films staring Mel Gibson from 1979 to 1985 are absolute classics. I would definitely recommend seeing them so that you can get a little more backstory behind Max, and a better sense of this post-apocalyptic world he inhabits. The story deals with the collapse of civilization due to shortages of oil, ecocide, and war, which reduces the world into barbarism. George Miller had been trying to make a fourth Mad Max film for years, but the project had long been stuck in development hell. I’d say it was worth the wait though, because this is one of the greatest action movies ever made! These are indeed humans, but as a result of radiation fallout from the war, many end up developing cancer, like Nux. This is why they consistently require blood transfusions from unwilling donors such as Max. Since Immortan Joe uses white powder as medication for his tumors and sores, the War Boys cover themselves in white powder as tribute to Joe because they were brought up to view him as their messiah. Since they aren’t expected to live long being “half-lives,” their only purpose is to fight and die. They believe that in order to ride eternal on the fury roads of Valhalla, they must die in combat on the road. In preparation for death, the War Boys will often inhale chrome paint as a drug to get high, and their mouths will look like they are made of metal like the V8 engines they worship. The thing you noticed coming out of Immortan Joes back is part of his breathing respirator. This is also why he wear a mask. Besides intimidation, it’s also part of his breathing apparatus.

The original trilogy movies are from 1979, 1981 and 1985, they can be a bit cheesy at times, but set up the lore of this universe, who and how Mad Max came to be, and how civilization fell. Really worth watching before the next movie comes out.
This was nominated for 10 Oscars including best picture and best director; it won 6 including best editing, production design and best costume design (it was nominated for best visual effects but it didn’t win .) Ps; cheers for Abby, a gifted reactor ❤🎉😊

You have to see the original Mad Max and Road Warrior. This is a post WWIII movie where everyone was irradiated by the nuclear bombs, so everyone has severe health problems, cancerous tumors, and lung problems from breathing in radioactive dust. There are a handful of Warlords that control the water and gas.

Yes, the new movie coming out is a prequel that explains furiosa and a bit of her backstory.. As for the lure for this movie, there are comic books and a video game that explain a lot of the lore.
Pretty much all the explosions, crashes, and fire are all real. Most of the cgi in this movie are landscapes that were added in.
The flaming guitar dude is called “The Doof Warrior” or “Coma-Doof Warrior” is an Australian stuntman married to actress Riley Keough who is the daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley and musician Danny Keough.

My reaction to you saying at the opening "This is going to be so good" is to only think that it was one of the few movies in the last 10 years that *needed* to be seen in theaters with the heavy sound. It was a beautiful assault on my being... and some of the best film I've seen in ages.
I almost died in a desert once. I was on a bus that broke down in Peru and nobody on board had any means of contacting anyone. A few hours were absolute hell and everything past that was a dream state where I didn't know if I was alive or dead and didn't really care. I remember a lot of cold and a lot of heat. That's about it. We were eventually picked up by another bus. I rented a room in a nearby town and bought a bottle of water. I don't remember doing either of those things. I'm not even sure how I pulled it off.

You should do the OG Max movies, with Mel Gibson.
"It must have been a blast to film..." No. No, it wasn't. Nine months in the African desert without a proper screenplay, two stars who hated each other and a studio breathing down the director's neck every day. Shooting (and editing) this movie was an absolute nightmare. But out of that turmoil came a masterpiece.
Fun Fact: The actor play8ng Immortan Joe is the same actor who played the bad guy in the original 1979 Mad Max. That's kinda why he was wearing that mask in this film so he wouldn't he recognized as such. George Miller likes to use the same actors in his films (especially in this Mad Max franchise) when he can, but often for different roles. Another example is when he used Bruce Dern in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior as the gyrocopter pilot, but then used him again as the plane pilot in Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome. Totally different characters. At least I believe that to be the case. But anyway, these newer films, Fury Road and now Furiosa are definitely within the same time line, with Furiosa being a prequel to Fury Road. And from a couple early access viewers, it's really good. The action scenes are not as numerous, but apparently they hit harder due to the story.
Everyone and everything in Fury Road had a background story.. Reasons for the air masks were due to all the radiation in the world , hence, the War Boys called themselves " half-lifes" Most of the special effects were practical as the Director Miller , an evolutionary pioneer of the early action films .. The new film Furiosa is gonna explain all of Fury Road and more. These films are definitely not MEDIOCRE 😎👍🎬
The History Man, referred to in the ending on-screen quote in FURY ROAD, is a character and narrator for FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA which is currently in theaters as I write this. The entire MAD MAX saga is best understood as mythology, stories passed along and changed over time among the post-literate cultures of a post-apocalyptic era, and Max as a kind of folk hero. The movies are deliberately contradictory; the same actors come back to play different characters, and the chronology is hard to pin down. In the first film, society is starting to crumble but still exists, but by FURY ROAD we see a world which has gone through generations since total collapse, but Max is still around, unaging.
The Lone Wanderer watched by the Lone Reactor. So appropriate. Hit the NOS and relax. The Mad Max game by Warner Bros is styled from this film and was made with the same care as both the Batman and Mordor franchises. I just finished my 4th playthrough. I install it about every 2 years or so. I always referred to this as a Mad Max story since Furiosa is the lead character while Max is spectating with no goal other than survival. It appears future film(s) will respect the difference which I applaud.
Wow is this really a Solo Rttm video reaction 😮❤ And Abby on top of that. Sounds Amazing

Fun Fact #2: George Miller actually shot the chase part of the movie first, and really didn't have any idea how to begin and end the film. The whole beginning part was shot later during the reshoots and only after a year and a half delay because WB didn't give him the money to finish the film.
The One-Armed, Bald-Headed Butch That Mad Max Sort of Helped: Fury Road
Could tell from near the beginning that this was the first Mad Max she's watched in the series. Should probably have her watch from the beginning cause she seems to have a lot of questions that could be answered by doing so.

Come on you can’t skip the opening title!! The score’s triple strings set the mood for the entire movie! 😂 love it though, this is one of the best flicks of the decade. Crazy how 2015 is already 9 years ago
Good solo reaction…. That’s the first one I’ve seen of Abby by herself…… good reaction😎🤔
The CGI was mostly compositing different shots and adding scenery. And Furiosa's arm. All the car and motorcycle stunts/crashes were real.
Just wondering if you knew there are 3 Mad Max movies before this one. -OG
It’s funny you think of George Miller in association with Happy Feet, yes, he did really cool kids moves like Happy Feet or Babe, BUT he’s a Hollywood legend PRECISELY because of Mad Max Series he started 45 years ago! And you were asking about sequels better than the original… Well, George Miller does that, he even made this, the fourth one, 35 years after the first one, the best, hands down, the best of all. And for an action post-apocalyptic themed movie, the movie got the biggest recognition an won six Oscars!
All alone today my lady. Glad you enjoyed this. I hope you watch Mad Maxx series with Mel Gibson. BTW, “Oh, what a day, what a lovely day!”

The First History Man is Max, but more aptly Max's archetype: the wanderer in the wasteland, searching for meaning. He's the witness who survives the horrors of the world and the documentarian who passes on that history.

My headcanon is that we're viewing the story as it's told by future tribal storytellers and 'Max' is now a mythic figure and an amalgam of various people in the wasteland whose true names have been forgotten in the retelling.

George Miller had a Justice League movie that almost began filming before the 07--08 Writer's Strike and the success of The Dark Knight. Had a solid script and great cast. Hugh Keyes Bryrne would've been The Martian Manhunter, and Megan Gale, the Valkyrie would've been Wonder Woman.

Fun Fact #3: The film was supposed to be filmed in 2001 with Mel Gibson returning as Max, but due to 9/11 and the fear of radical Islamiats causing problems on the set in Namibia they put the film on hold. So when they decided to start filming in the early 2010s, Mel backed out of the project because he felt that he was too old for the role at that point and his reputation was not good at that point.

You should search on KZread the behind the scenes of this movie. They are amazing. There are several where they explain how they did the cars, how they are all functional. And show some of the compositing of the real shooting and the CGI that was mainly to just "marry" everything. It's impressive how in some scenes a lot looks so big which makes you think t's CGI, but it's just some backgrounds, bigger explosions or adding something like a bigger canyon or hiding something they didn't want.

They get so confused when "Questionable" people do good work.
This movie is not very highly regarded amongst the Mad Max community. Mel Gibson is the real Max, and the story follows HIM, hence the name. Instead, this one changes the main character to some new chick, and focuses the whole movie around freeing enslaved women held captive by an evil man. Stereotypical feminazi propaganda at its finest. "Lets take a great movie series well loved by fans worldwide and bastardize it for our political agenda." They did the same thing to Terminator with one of the most recent movies too. If you want to experience the actual Mad Max story, the first three movies are the only legit films.
"oh so they're like vampires" 😐 no...they're humans. you know humans need blood, right? it's so wild that people sometimes think this movie gets weird and sci-fi with how the War Boys' need for blood is depicted, but actually the movie was written/directed by a doctor who simply depicted blood the way it works in our world today
So you watched the entire movie and didn't know nothing about nothing? Not even some of the characters names? No wonder you were confused 😂
