Mad Gasser of Mattoon
Ойын-сауық
During September 1944, people living in the town started showing symptoms of exposure to poison gas, such nausea, vomiting and lightheadedness. The victims would all report smelling a "sweet cheap perfume odor" in their homes falling ill. The name given to the one believed to be responsible for these apparent gas attacks was “The Mad Gasser of Mattoon.”

Now this one is quite creepy. Be it mass hysteria or an actual assailant, the idea of someone lurking about spraying unknown potentially lethal chemicals is VERY terrifying.
For a little while in the early 90's, I lived in the house at 1408 Marshall Avenue where the Kearneys were, allegedly, attacked. At the time, I had never heard of the Mad Gasser. I didn't know anything about it until long after I moved out. There are a lot of manufacturing businesses in that area that can produce some odd smells which can travel a long distance depending on the wind. I grew up in a small town here in southern Illinois and I have often described the area to people as, "Think Children of the Corn." It's definitely a place where mass hysteria could easily take over.
I have never heard of this story. Thanks!
Good job Pinnso! Another mystery presented well. Thanks for all your work!
Yay! New Pinnso! 💃💚🦔 This case was an interesting one, very creepy. Great job, as always!
If you tried making up an urban legend about a character called 'The Mad Gasser of Mattoon' it would sound too over the top to be believable. Sometimes I just love reality, man.
The Mad Gasser, LOL. Sorry! Always like 🙂Thank you my dear

Eee! Toxic fumes!!
The mass hysteria hypothesis would seem to be a plausible explanation but for the finding of the piece of cloth emitting the same or similar odor. Although the police in a small town may not necessarily be expected to have forensic capability, especially when the department was understaffed, they should at least have known of the need to seal the cloth inside an airtight container to preserve any volitile substance. Moreover, the police seem to have been predisposed to accept the mass hysteria explanation, not a professional approach. You mention chemicals in storage at the nearby Atlas Imperial company. Specifically carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene. Is it possible that an employee at the company stole a sample of one or both, then for whatever reason decided to conduct "experiments" on the residents of Mattoon? That small piece of odorous cloth, which could have been inadvertently dropped by the perpetrator, was the key piece of evidence that the town's people were not crazy.
hm, very strange. good thing the women were only temporarily effected by the gas.
that was a gas Thank you
I’m so fascinated by the idea of mass hysteria. I feel like a story like this becomes even stranger if it’s caused by a mass shared psychological event. What does that say about our minds and consciousness itself?
🦔🗣😲🔥
Gas is Sag spelled backwards

I'm sorry but mass hysteria is one of the biggest lies ever told to the public
