Macro Quickie - how to pose tiny spiders

I came across a pair of awesome crab spiders during a recent romp in the meadow and thought you might like to see how I go about posing the little blighters for a portrait. It is an uncharacteristically brief and to-the-point video - but it does have a few cool pictures and some helpful pointers.
The microscope I am using is an inexpensive AmScope model (SE305-P-LED). It is nothing fancy but does a fantastic job for the small investment.
Hope there is something useful for you in this one!

    I realize this is not your fault in any way whatsoever but I ordered exactly the microscope you listed in your show notes and the ocular tubes face the wrong way. I finally got through to Amscope after trying previously to reach them to get help (8 phone calls and they never answer) today after receiving my microscope and they informed me that the model must have an R in the model number to have the same orientation as the one you have. As I'm in another country if I want to return and reorder I pay the shipping and most likely customs and duties again. As I said, nothing to do with you but I thought you'd want to know so you could update the microscope model in the show notes. Cheers!

    Hello, Allan. I've spied some cool standing specimen holders in your videos, adjustable arms with small clips. Having a tricky time finding them online. Can you assist? You've probably made them yourself, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for all your help. Looking forward to your new macro series when it is released. Cheers. R.W.

    I know they're "only" insects but it's a shame they have to die in order to be captured so magnificently, is the destruction of such wonderful creatures and taking them from their habitat something you consider ? Another amazingly interesting video. You've mentioned in the past you are a retired medical Doctor. I've often wondered, do you find that having the hands of a surgeon help with the steadiness needed in working with small creatures?

  • @AllanWallsPhotography

    @AllanWallsPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Darrell, I have no doubt that all my surgical experience helps - but it isn't in the way most people might think. Surgeons don't necessarily have steady hands, we just become expert at finding ways to stabilize our hands when we work. Things like resting the heal of your hand on a surface to manipulate a fine instrument. There is always a way to stabilize, even if it's just with your other hand. And it is no different in fiddling with tiny bugs - I keep my hand grounded on the stage of the microscope - it makes all the difference!

    Hello Vlad! What model of a microscope did you buy? Amscope has quite a number of models and it would help to know the model number. It seems very clear and I am looking to buy a microscope soon. Please let me/us know what model. Thanks in advance. Also, where did you get those incredible tweezers? I've been thinking about getting something like the type you are using.

    Hi Allan, another great video...thank you. I've always had an interest in macro photography, and covid restrictions have given me the chance to sit down and watch all your presentations. I particularly liked the one about using the microscope objective, but I had none of the equipment you showed, so I ordered several items on eBay...the objective, tubes, adapter etc. Each thing was sold by a different vendor, and with viral delays they have all had various delivery delays. It reminded me of those "build by the month" magazine series where you make a model of the Cutty Sark or something at one piece per issue. As each package arrived I'd be excited to find out which bit of the puzzle I had! The helicoid hasn't arrived yet, but as luck would have it, playing around with extension tube combinations I've achieved a distance between the focal plane of my Canon 5D Mk III and the end of the objective of exactly 61mm, so it just might work. Keep your videos coming...I just love them!

  • @AllanWallsPhotography

    @AllanWallsPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Neil - I'm glad you have been inspired to explore high magnification! So much fun. Unless it was a typo, you will need to find another 100mm of extension for your setup. The sensor/objective distance needs to be as close to 160mm as possible (subtracting the flange focal distance, of course).

  • @NeilW210

    Dear Allan,i have bought stackshot macro rail.by now is everything ok,but i can not understand how will the camera focus if its turned on manual focus.and second what metering do You use when making macro photos.thanks in advance.

  • @AllanWallsPhotography

    @AllanWallsPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Kristijan, The focusing of your camera is accomplished by the movement of the camera. You focus on the closest element of your subject and allow the rail to move your camera/lens forward in increments - as it moves the focal plane moves also, resulting in a stack of images with different planes of focus. Metering is not an issue, except when setting up your shot. You should not be using TTL, as you don't want the light intensity to differ from image to image. As you will be shooting in full manual, all you need to do is ensure that your exposure is adequate by taking a series of test shots, and then leave everything as it is for the sequence of photographs. The key is that everything is set manually!

    I pinned them on/through the foam board, spreading the legs. Now I wanna photograph them and want to keep them on the pin to position it, but the pin is still through the foam board. I don't want to get them off the pin. How to....?? Trick?

  • @AllanWallsPhotography

    @AllanWallsPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    I actually use the pin to hold the card and spider to photograph. It is gets in the way, just carefully snip it off with very sharp wire cutters, flush with the underside of the card. The pin really needs to stay for the shot - moving it will flatten the specimen and defeat the purpose.
