LYRICS:
When I was in the third grade I thought that I was gay,
'Cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight.
I told my mom, tears rushing down my face
She's like "Ben you've loved girls since before pre-k, trippin' "
Yeah, I guess she had a point, didn't she?
Bunch of stereotypes all in my head.
I remember doing the math like, "Yeah, I'm good at little league"
A preconceived idea of what it all meant
For those that liked the same sex
Had the characteristics
The right wing conservatives think it's a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion
Man-made rewiring of a predisposition
Playing God, aw nah here we go
America the brave still fears what we don't know
And God loves all his children, is somehow forgotten
But we paraphrase a book written thirty-five-hundred years ago
I don't know
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love
My love
My love
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
If I was gay, I would think hip-hop hates me
Have you read the KZread comments lately?
"Man, that's gay" gets dropped on the daily
We become so numb to what we're saying
A culture founded from oppression
Yet we don't have acceptance for 'em
Call each other faggots behind the keys of a message board
A word rooted in hate, yet our genre still ignores it
Gay is synonymous with the lesser
It's the same hate that's caused wars from religion
Gender to skin color, the complexion of your pigment
The same fight that led people to walk outs and sit ins
It's human rights for everybody, there is no difference!
Live on and be yourself
When I was at church they taught me something else
If you preach hate at the service those words aren't anointed
That holy water that you soak in has been poisoned
When everyone else is more comfortable remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans that have had their rights stolen
I might not be the same, but that's not important
No freedom till we're equal, damn right I support it
(I don't know)
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love
My love
My love
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
We press play, don't press pause
Progress, march on
With the veil over our eyes
We turn our back on the cause
Till the day that my uncles can be united by law
When kids are walking 'round the hallway plagued by pain in their heart
A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are
And a certificate on paper isn't gonna solve it all
But it's a damn good place to start
No law is gonna change us
We have to change us
Whatever God you believe in
We come from the same one
Strip away the fear
Underneath it's all the same love
About time that we raised up
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can't change
Even if I try
Even if I wanted to
My love
My love
My love
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love is patient
Love is kind
(not crying on Sundays)
Love is patient
(not crying on Sundays)
Love is kind
(I'm not crying on Sundays)
Love is patient
(not crying on Sundays)
Love is kind
(I'm not crying on Sundays)
Love is patient
(not crying on Sundays)
Love is kind
(I'm not crying on Sundays)
Love is patient
Love is kind

I'm really grateful that Macklemore made a song like this. A year ago I was in so much pain emotionally about being gay and I can truly say this song was the push for me to come out to my mother. A year later, she accepts me completely and considers my girlfriend a second daughter. Its nice to see a straight male with so much passion for this subject.

+409 In Your Coffee Maker. Hey I love all and I may disagree with it but Im not gonna force any of my faith on someone that doesn't want it. That being said the supreme court can't make a law...only strike one down. Even if it was something I supported heavily, if the supreme court passed it I wouln't agree with the method. Because its not constitutionally legal. People had gotten this passed in many other states and were working on it all over the U.S.. The only time I got truly upset is when the supreme court decided they could make a law when they CANNOT. And deciding to force the acceptance on other people. Don't we deserve respect when we disagree and have the same right to abstain from doing something we don't believe in? Its a scary thing when the courts decide they can make laws...what's to stop them from passing another law that neither side of the gay/lesbian debate likes. And their only argument is...we're the supreme court...you let us make the last law...we can make this one too. Again even if this were a law supporting something I liked, I would still be against it just because the supreme court made it up. Every state had their own vote as to what the collective population wanted as far as it being legal or not. Then the government had to stick their nose in and do something completely wrong. Doesn't matter what law it was they made up...my concern is that they made one up at all...why should one branch have that kind of power? and why do we keep letting them get away with it? In order to remain free as Americans are supposed to be...the courts can't control the whole nation. Trust me, right now people are happy because a law was passed that they supported. Soon a lot more laws that you dont support will begin passing and people wont be so glad the supreme court decided it could make laws.

+Joshua Davis I appreciate how respectfully you stated that, and I'm not at all trying to attack you, I'm merely pointing something out. The supreme court's job is to interpret the constitution, often that means to decide whether an existing law fits, however, sometimes it is merely to decide what the amendments mean, and in the case of gay marriage, that decided that the lbgtq community deserved protection under the constitution, which is in fact their job. As a lesbian who never wants to get married, it may not affect me, but I'm damn glad that everyone is equal, and that should be the priorty of all branches of our government, should it not?

We disagree and that's all good. Thank you for your response as well. We wont be agreeing I know, and me responding with anything other than thank you for your respect as well, would be elementary. You think it's within their power to do this and that it covers what they're supposed to do, and I believe they overstepped interpreting a law. We may never agree but again, thank you for replying with decency, as it's hard to find nowadays.

  • @jdwylde7

I apologize Its late and I didnt realize you had a question at the end. I think, honestly, that the courts should more closely follow the constitution and they are getting more and more loose with their interpretations.Case in point, this whole Kim Davis mess..she took that oath when it said something different...but changing the oath after 15 years isn't equal or fair in my opinion at all. It re-defines what someone promised by changing the contract in a basic sense. I think that gaining the right to become legally married should have been something each state decided on it's own, as it was intended to be. Often the opposing party's right are violated because this really isn't a debate about people being equal because of course everyone is and should be created equal...this this is a debate on if everyone'e belief should be equal in the sense that a woman's religious freedow of belief was taken away when she refused to go against her belief. if everyone's beliefs were equal, if we're being honest, then in reality, the deciding factor on whose beliefs trump whose...depends on how the person in the court casting the final vote stands on the issue..which still isn't fair or equal. I said all that to say this...alot of times the lgbt community chant for freedom and liberty and the right to marry. Ok, If so much of this is about equality and rights...then why must ours be taken away so yours can flourish? Why can we be locked up and arrested for standing on our beliefs if they go against yours? In the end it's not equal...in order for something like this to stand...they have to demand that we abandon our beliefs in order to cater someone else's...and that, my friend, is unconstitutional, unfair, and completely wrong.

Sorry, but everyone here saying Tegan and Sara can't sing and are talentless? You clearly have not done your research. Sit and listen to every album they have written, listen to their live performances throughout the years, then come back, eh. I'm not Canadian, I'm Scottish and I know them, so that argument's invalid too. And Macklemore is clearly a very brave, talented and inspiring man, writing this song despite the amount of hate and controversy it's caused. This video is just amazing.

  • @RustyBabbonero

    10 жыл бұрын

MartyBarret Hahahahaha. You really don't get it. Lemme explain it slowly then. I am... 100%... for equal rights. You, are not. Here is why: "People who are against gays getting married need to go to prison." That's what you said. You want people to go to jail, and lose their rights, because they do not share your opinion. That is the equivalent to saying, "people who are for gay marriage should go to jail. People who marry a same sex couple should go to jail." Do you see what I'm getting at here. You are exactly the same as the people you claim to hate, the "haters," except you're on the other side of the fence. You cannot have equal rights by taking the rights away from the opposing side. Then it is not equal. Educate yourself, that way you can educate others. Because educating is how we will accomplish equal rights. Not by force and violence and anger and name calling. You. Child.

I think the only thing stopping them from nailing it is the fact that they are clearly incredibly nervous. Maybe just out of their element.

To me, their soft voice makes me feel accepted. Like a mother and hugs you when you're crying. And when Macklemore sings, he is defending me while I'm being hugged by her.

True love is so rare. When one finds it who are we to find anything wrong with it. Those who fight against it are just sad individuals who do not have a true understanding of what true love is for if they had been lucky enough to have ever experienced a moment of true love they would never want to deny anyone from having such a pure and rare intimacy.

You know, I'm Christian, and sure some might think that I'm being convinced by the devil to having these views, but really, if two people are going to honour marriage for all the glory that it is, are going to be wise about their sexual encounters leading up to that, are going to really truly COMMIT to their spouse and through their marriage honour God, then hey, that's better than sleeping around with people you aren't committed to, causing your soul to be torn time and time again, and being prevented from reaching your true potential in this life. I'm just another commenter so take no notice of me, but if people start seeing the good that can come out of same sex marriage for the future, rather than the unrest it causes in the present, then it would be a different story. Could it be that you can be a lover of Jesus and still gay? I believe so. What if this factor is preventing a generation of non-heterosexuals from knowing the love of our God? I ask this question.

He's probably the best and most caring artist/musician/rapper today. He is really trying to change people for the good, and he even succeeds in some part. Tegan and Sara have nice voices and all... but they are nothing compared to Ryan and Macklemore and what they've done for this world.

As a heterosexual man, I applaud all concerned with this song and video. It is powerful and very engaging. This song pushed the musical boundaries every other way, from a social AND musical POV. The piano entry is brave and astonishing - especially in our fast food, fast music 2013 entrapment ! Seems like brilliance is (unfortunately) associated with the non gay community !!!

thought so too, but then I say an interview of them about that....they spontanously got invited to sing it...so there was no preparation at all and a lot of panic;) If you sing a song (the first time) and don't hear yourself that well, it can go very wrong even if they would be one of the best singers of the world (what they are actually not, too;))
