Mackinac Island: It’s Like Stepping Back in Time!!

Mackinac Island is like no other place! It is an island only accessible by ferry… and NO cars are allowed!! Bikes are the main mode of transportation… or horses. Yes, horses! The taxis on the island are horse drawn carriages, and so is the trash pickup.
This place is like stepping back 100+ years to a simpler time. Main Street is filled with shops and restaurants but the rest of the island is spread out. There is an 8 mile hwy around the edge which is the only hwy in America for bike only traffic.
And don’t miss the Grand Hotel, it is spectacular! It boasts the longest front porch in the USA! It is lined with rocking chairs that have a magnificent view of Lake Huron.
Oh, and don’t forget to get some fudge! Did you know that fudge is the most consumed food on the island? And the locals call tourists ‘fudgies’???

I went on a field trip to Mackinac Island in 2009 or so when my daughter was in 4th grade with her school. We stayed a couple nights at the Island House Hotel. It was beautiful. We went to the Grand Hotel for the lunch buffet and didn’t have to be dressed up so yes the dress code is only in the evening. We visited Fort Mackinac and a few other places on the island. They have a place where they make taffy too. Overall it was a great trip. The island is so beautiful. We went in May, it was cold but not as crowded.

I visited Mackinac Island with my family as a young kid and had two main memories from that trip. The first one was we rented bikes with one being a tandem bike and we biked around the island. The tandem bike was fun, but challenging for us kids as we wanted to be the in the front. The second memory that stick out to me was eating lunch at the Grand Hotel. This sticks out to me because every table had a waiter dressed in all white formal wear and a hand towel standing the same way and every waiter was black. I was probably less than 10 years old but remember wondering why all the waiters had to be black and why they had to wait at our table.

Overall I like a lot of States in USA. This year we went to 9 States and later another 5 States, total of 14 States this year, the most we have ever went in 5 months. Just like Missouri, there's alot of beautiful ( smaller cities ) , they are nice and clean cities. Well manage. Tenneesee, Kentucky , has pretty "little cities" . I really like Murray Kentucky . So glad you enjoyed Mackinac Island! It's one of our many treasures here in MI. Glad you hit the Pink Pony. The Lake Huron beaches here in MI are very rocky, all down the coast. The waters all around Mackinac are pretty clear...and cold! lol Did you have to pay to go up to the Grand Hotel? They started charging to go up to the porch years ago. I remember being able to just go up and visit when I was a kid. I don't think you were able to enter unless you had a reservation. Not sure, never went inside. Did you get a chance to see where Christopher Reeve sat in the film, Somewhere In Time? That was one of the few times cars were allowed on the island. You'll have to come back when you have a few days to spend time around the Straits, there is so much to see! Loving the sneak peek for the next video! Taquahmenon Falls are a really cool place to visit, too. Thanks for showing how beautiful our #PureMichigan is! 💜✋

No they are not rocky all the way down the coast of Lake Huron. Try visiting Harrisville through Tawas beaches (Oscoda is the best in my opinion), also some beaches on the tip and western tip of the thumb are sandy.

@@debbiec6216 I'm pretty sure the dress code is formal for evening. I'm sure the website has all the information. There are many other hotels and some B&Bs to stay at on the island.

Does it take 1 or 2 days to see this place ? I heard the best time to visit "May", before tourist season. If you wanted to stay on the island, what is the second best place to stay ? Or where is a good website to check out the hotels ,etc? I am a newbie , gathering information. If I'm going to visit this island I'm going to stay on it overnight at least.
