I owned a 1975 version of that truck in the mid 80's. 320 coolpower and 10 speed. Wish I still had it...

Sounds like a ripper mate, the 320 was a great engine, and a good combination with a 10 speed.

Great work Dave! I had a drive in a FR700 around 50 years ago when I was about 20 years old.... The V8 rumble with a 1000 RPM powerband with just a 5 speed because of that, with the exhaust smoke and air start.Very memorable!! All the best with the rebuild. Want to see it when completed.

I can tell you that alongside the gear change lever was the under drive lever…. But the truck was geared for 70 MPH or better with probably at least a 3 second turbo lag…..! It was the 325 HP Maxidyne of course. A lot of power back then!! Regards Peter

Yeah Matty it went fairly smoothly although one of the cab latch hooks got caught on the way up. It was good that Sutto picked up on it before it became a problem.

I use to have two 1980 F models back in the 80’s . I got sick of replacing cab torsion bars when the broke , so put an mount at the back of the bottom of the cab and another mount at the top of at air cleaner gantry and used a block and tackle to lift the cab 😅👍

That’s one way to solve a problem Greg! 😂 necessity is the mother of invention. I have a few wrecks here with broken torsion bars in them. I reckon I’ve got enough good bars for the trucks I want to keep alive though.

Slow and steady gets the job done well. You couldn’t bore us to death if you tried: if I tried to stand between the cab and ladder like that it wouldn’t wind up good. For me it wouldn’t be a few months but a few years at best. Keep on entertaining us mate.

It was a good looking truck in its working life. The original colour scheme is a bit different style, but still uses orange and white

I was wondering if you could do a comparison between The Pensioner and the FR700 (just while the cab is off) for those who don’t understand the differences in the chassis rails between the two…

In Australia from 1971 onwards, a locally made fibreglass cab was offered in both day cab and sleeper options. This came about because the steel cabs from the US were supposedly hard to get for a while, and it also boosted the Australian content of the build, which was encouraged and rewarded at the time. No Brad, I didn't get a truck down south today for the Hume run unfortunately.

⁠ah good to know, I knew there was a run of fibreglass cabs somewhere just didn’t know when. Missed seeing your r banger, I only seen one on the Hume, the rest were all on flat tops :(

Where was your father based Stephen? The F model are a good old truck in my opinion. They crash and bang a bit in the front mate, its pretty hard to keep them tight in the cab bush area.
