1:05 - "Remove the motherboard from the computer. Simple as that, huh?" In my case, I had to remove the motherboard (of a Mac Classic) from a machine that had a clock battery explosion and a lot of metal corrosion on the frame as a result. I really had to fight it to get the corroded frame to let go of the board!

I personally prefer using a dishwasher. It basically does the scrubbing part everywhere and can’t miss anything.

A good point, though some would be understandably nervous about that option. It's good to hear that you've had success with it.

recapping is the permanent fix, you just wash off the electrolyte that is shorting out the board

That's true. I'll hopefully do a 'part 2' to this video.

Yes sure, but definitely at least everyone should clean their motherboard. I've seen people just re-cap the MBs, leaving the cap juice everywhere which is just going to cause more corrosion later on or the thing to stay shorted out. Thisdoesnotcompute did that with his SE/30... never washed it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKiTo6OTnq2-edY.html .... bad

Remove motherboard. Remove capacitors from board. Remove components (RAM, etc.). Stick in dishwasher on a cycle. Remove and dry in a container with rice for several days to a week. Solder on new capacitors. Enjoy.

You probably have some broken traces/vias.

I get the error chime on my SE/30. Could this be because I have no RAM SIMMs inserted? I also get the simasimac problem, but not sure if I need to re-cap the board or not.

No the SE/30 will not startup with no ram Simms installed. And yes you need to recap it! These old caps had a shelf life of about 15 years, and they are almost 30 years old now!

Speaking of recap, I have sent my LC II motherboard to be recapped by a specialist to add new caps which do not leak.
@Mr.BrownsBasement4 жыл бұрын
You should mention that the old Lithium clock/P-RAM batteries that aren't supposed to leak DO ACTUALLY LEAK and will irreparably corrode the motherboard traces if given the chance. Any Mac which sits for a long time should have its Lithium battery carefully removed and taken to Toxic Waste disposal.

@@65scribe A number of years ago I worked for a company that built cluster-based supercomputers and got sent to be on-site for a high-profile install at a national lab. It was staged at a nearby Supermicro facility (we used their motherboards) and I learned there that they regularly used dishwashers to clean reworked prototype boards and such to get rid of flux residue. I haven't tried it myself!
