I find it incredible that Macintosh software from 1984 is still as usable (even if outdated) and as easy to pick up and work with today as it was back then. Compare with IBM PC software from the same era, which usually came with a huge thick binder of a manual filled with control codes you had to memorize before you could so much as type a letter to your mom.

Wikipedia, Low End Mac, and Every Mac are three places to dig through that history. When Steve Jobs came back to the company, he thought their product line was way too cluttered and they should have only consumer or pro, portable or desktop. That's when iBook, Powerbook, iMac, and Power Mac became the new simplified product line.

I had an SE-30 and even that was bought used for me while in college. I loved that thing. I still have Macs.

The thing is, whether you are an Apple fan or not, there’s no denying they made a huge leap forward in terms of computers being “user friendly” (did we even have that term back then?). Before that time, using a computer generally made most people feel like an idiot, unless you had a degree in computer science. Then along came these little machines and suddenly everybody wanted a computer!

I remember buying one of these from CompUSA it was the Macintosh Classic II however, what I remember distinctively was the booklets that came with the Macs back in the day. Specifically, the "Classic" being a Trade mark used under license from the Coca-Cola Company!. I remember it because when I read the booklet I remember thinking how interesting that the word Classic was a trademark let alone owned by Coca-cola.

Great vid. A lot of people slam this machine because it was so low powered, especially at the time. But they really forget how important it was to have it come out at under $1000 at the time. That was huge, and as a result people underestimate how big a deal this was. That's why I love my Classic. That and the superdrive (as you mentioned; to make it easier to get software on it). Also, it's the only Mac with that System in ROM. Love those... Yeah, I did have to recap it.

Great videos. There are soooo many of these still floating around so they obviously sold well. But Apple had no place shipping 1984 hardware in 1992!

I "checked out" a Macintosh Classic from the local computer store (ComputerLand?) in 1985 to test drive it. All I did was give them my driver's license in order to borrow it for a weekend. Was very impressed, but couldn't afford the price.

My first mac. 1991. Mac classic. Aldus pagemaker. And I was away. Published a monthly youth mag. Mine was 40mb HDD and 4mb RAM.

i remember lusting for the IIFX - that machine was killer! much like the much later model Quadra950 and PowerMac 9500! the last teo mentioned were supremely expandable!

Ahhhh, yes... I wanted one of these so bad when I was in the 4th grade, but my parents wouldn't go for it, so with the CoCo2 and the upgraded Amstrad PC1512 I kept going. I have one now in my collection of original compact Macs, and it and my spare Color Classic are the only two that still need recapping. My Classic II runs like a top though, freshly recapped as well as my SE/30.

I love my Classic.

It was the iMac before the iMac. I loved that machine.

It's "jumps" over the lazy dog, not "jumped". If you use the latter, you break the purpose of using every letter at least once because you forfeit the s!

I had one as a simple games/play/homework machine while my dad had a iicx for work. I never really appreciated having a Classic. If I had any idea how much it cost I probably would have cherished it a bit more.

Nice overview. You need a new power supply though, or recap the one you have in there. The screen is jiggling when your hard drive is active because of the extra power it's drawing then. Good luck!

I kinda knew it had something to do with the analog board-I'm not an expert when it comes to power supplies so I'll have to find a replacement sometime in the future. Thanks for confirming it though!

Pronounced Gah-SAY, he's French. I spent a lot of time in my college's computer lab with Macs, bring yer own disk. Way too much time playing Lode Runner. Did plenty of papers with Macwrite. Worked on yearbook with Wordperfect for Mac. Classic released at less than half price of original Mac, but still more than this broke student could afford my own then. ($1500 for the 2 MB RAM, 40 MB hard drive version for usability.) Great keyboard and mouse, very comfortable and productive. No reason for the consumer to open the box on this one. A reminder that free emulator software lets you run the vintage operating system and programs in a window on your modern day computer o r browser. I had no idea there's a public domain source version of Macpaint. Gotta check that out. You should get Talking Moose and ResEdit for your Mac Classic.

I am very well aware of Classic Mac emulation, been using it more often than real hardware (unsurprisingly) As for your comment on the correct pronunciation of Gassée, I’ll take note of that the next time I revisit this computer ;)
