    Surely the key thing (which you mentioned in passing but didn't really talk about it) is that propane uses a lot more oxygen than the same amount of acetylene. A cubic foot of acetylene needs 1.2 cu ft of oxygen to burn cleanly, so that energy is going into 2.2 cu ft of gas. A cubic foot of propane needs 4.3 cu ft of oxygen, so while there's more energy it's going into 5.3 cu ft of gas. A cubic foot of propane has 1.7 times the energy of a cubic foot of acetylene, but it's going into 2.4 times the volume of gas so there's more total energy but a lower temperature - the heat has effectively been diluted more.

    I worked for a garage with tons of steel inside. Every day in the winter the boss would turn the natural gas burner off at five o'clock after just an hour earlier it just started cycling on and off because it finally reached a workable temperature. The next day the burner would run all day constantly till all the steel warmed up. Cycle normally for an hour and get shut down again. Over and over. Every day work inside in outside temperatures for half a day. Impact guns and othe air tools would fracture from use.

    Anything 1” and under I usually just use my hacksaw. Just for workout purposes…anything thicker than than I use my laser vision. 😂

    As a student studying engineering and looking towards projects and systems engineering, the semantics discussions are very interesting and informative, as the backtraced issues of logistics, chemistry reactions, and the stoichiometry all playing into cost and effort. I’m reminded of the maxim that practical ends up beating theoretical most days of the week.

    Yeah, I know some people think it’s nefarious to have gone from traditional copper to copper plated zinc. But they had no choice. When the price of copper was less than the penny cost to make at $1.00 per hundred pennies, they could be made from copper. But when the price of copper began to rise above the point where it would cost less than that dollar to produce 100 coins, they had to go to something cheaper. At any rate, economists have said, for years now, that it’s time to discontinue pennies altogether. We used to have a coin called the mille. That was worth a tenth of a penny. That’s been gone for a very long time. By the way, we have a very good idea of what the earth is made of, all the way down. A perfect knowledge? Of course not, but pretty close.

    Great video until the very end, at which point Howee obviously gets out of his expertise. You don't need to know the composition of the earth to measure and/or model the temperature and heat content of the atmosphere. We have very accurate measurements of both the chemical content of the atmosphere and the extent of the atmosphere. We also have a pretty good understanding at a global scale of how heat transfers from the atmosphere into both the oceans and the ground, as well as radiating into space. That's why climate models from decades ago have actually been remarkably accurate in their ability to predict how the global atmospheric temperature is going to change. The places where uncertain exists are in our ability to predict fine grained changes, such as what the specific climate change will be in a particular city. That's in part because we don't have fine grained measurements of the world around us, as well as the immense computational power required to make a detailed simulation of a physical system of the size of the earth.

    I am an Acety bloke, being a field service business LPG is of very little use to me ( can't even light it ) in the wind. I would love to be able to use LPG because of cost, here in Aus we cop a fairly substantial rental fee on our acety and oxy bottles which on top of the cost of gas makes it an expensive habit

    There are some modern heating heads with improved orifice design. Much better for light up. It may be a little "not safe", but you can crack the o2 valve just a smidgen. It will help it stabilize. At the last job we used alot of LP for heating plate. I knew exactly how much to open each valve so when I lit up it snapped right into a neutral flame.

    Might be worth investing in a petrogen torch. All you need is gasoline or diesel and an oxygen bottle.

    Aperiently alot of people havent cut up scrap . Or straightened a excavator bucket that pin has came out of half way . There is a time and a place for each .i have propane acetylene and a plasma .

    I did you and me a rude disservice this morning. I know I missed something but I just could not hear the propane vs acetylene comparison again. I know you are as experienced and savvy as any person I've had the privilege of listing to.I made the choice forty years ago, it's not worth the expense of two gases, tips ect. to use far more oxygen AND not being able to weld with the propane. Just me, not a propane guy. To me as useless as the man made global warming BS and the EV scam.

    Any thoughts on the performance of mapp gas in this comparison? I haven't heard much about the performance but it should be easier to handle than acetylen.

    @@clockworkvanhellsing372 No expert on Mapp but have the same misgivings as propane. It is painfully slow and uses a lot of oxygen. Plus we could not gas weld the root passes on boiler tubes with it. Hate the stuff.
