@@LetsRogerThat Gilles, when cleaning up your lathe after using abrasives, you're supposed to clean out your chuck(s) too, if you want to be picky. The loose abrasive particles will eventually wear the chuck just like they can wear the lathe's ways. Isn't it a bit irritating when the material you ordered doesn't quite clean up properly?! ;)

@@bobvines00 thanks Bob, great advice as always. I actually take everything apart after each project so she’ll last beyond my remaining years. 😊. Gilles

Switch back to the original tool post and grind your own HSS tools. I feel dirty watching all this cheap insert tooling make stringy chips and horrible finishes on these tiny cuts. That China tool posts and tooling is actually working against you.

Hss won’t cut prehardened 4140 in my experience. Tried several times. The carbide inserts I use are for finishing and always give me mirrorlike finish. The chinese post has served me well so far and when I started out 3 or so years ago it was the only way for me to afford getting into this. I was even able to mill a surface grinder spindle within 0.0002”. But you are correct that a sturdier post like BXA at this point would allow me to take larger cuts. Perhaps someday. Gilles

@@LetsRogerThat pre hardened 4140 is roughly 30 Rockwell, HSS cuts it no problem. If you're having trouble spend more time testing f&s. I absolutely guarantee you'll do better with a machine like yours to throw all that chinese carbide away, it's garbage. Save your money for high quality HSS tool blanks. The toolpost is a convenience, I do understand that, but again it's only working against you when it comes to chatter and finishes, also those things break and hurt people, look into it.

@@nuxboxen tks I will definitely look into HSS grades and try it your way. I appreciate the tip. Gilles
