Excellent coolant maintenance tips It's useful for my business

At a shop I worked at we had a DI system that ran lines over a 55 gal drum of concentrate and the plumbing at the drum had a valve that allowed a variable amout of concentrate to be added to the water so it came out of the hose pre mixed and went straight into coolant tanks or buckets. If the coolant in the tanks were at the correct concentrate or higher we did add straight water to the tanks to top off and checked it again. We also cleaned every tank once a month and our systems stayed clean as fuck. Usually they never got as low as the demo here unless it was hot and everything was evaporating quickly.

Here at #Haas we are using Castrol Hysol MB 50. This “high-oil” semi-synthetic has proven quite successful across the various machines and material types we use in our machine shop.

I can't imagine any shop owner going through all this.

In your visual demonstration, you did not use the same proportions; you used 1 part coolant to 4 parts of water, then you used 1 part water to 4 parts coolant. That will in itself give you poor results

Hi, Do you have any links for the manual pump?

In the company I work for we have a blaser swiselube mixer which screws into a blaser mineral oil barrel. A hose pipe then directs tap water through the mixer and into a bucket mixed and ready to go. There is also a knob you swift to lower and increase the percentage of the coolant. We get our coolant in our machine lab tested and everything is always fine. I think this method is long winded and a bit ott.

Emulsion brand name? Do you have any suggestions? Who What kind do you use?

It would be just like using oil. Iv'e tried it... hahahaha. Coolant is much more expensive because it has sodium emulsifier so oil can mix with water.

What if my machines coolant is literally green, is at 2%, hasn't been drained in years, and has thick layers of way lube mixed with coolant floating on top in this thick gooey mix. Also, is smells like sombebody pissed in it then dropped a dead rat in the tank to let it rot. Should i find a new place to work?

Hello Steve, We added the 1 to the .06 so that we could solve for the quantity of "Top up water" 1st, and then subtract that value from the total "Top up coolant" to yield the "Top up concentrate" needed to mix the "Top up coolant" at the 6% target ratio. Thanks for the question.

I guess I didn't make my question clear enough, I meant why "1" as opposed to 2 or 3? do you always add 1? and why can't you just take .06 x 31.32 to get the concentration of the coolant directly?

@@steveseon2143 I believe they made a mistake there. 6% concentration means that 6 gal (or L) of Concentrate are contained inside 100 gal (or L) of Coolant (Water + Concentrate). So what you say is true I believe! The Top up Concentrate is 0.06*31.32=1.88 gal and the Top up Water is (1-0.06)*31.32=29.44 gal so that Top up Concentrate=1.88 gal + Top up Water=29.44 gal = Top up Coolant=31.32 gal.

dump it in the machine and turn the coolant on is what i do, aint nobody got time for this

If you have the money for a Haas, then you should have an inline mixer from a drum. Why would I have my machines sitting idle while you're playing around with coolant concentration levels. Set it to mix correctly right from the drum and simply check it weekly with the refractometer. Occasionally you might need to spike it a bit to maintain the %, but there's no reason to mix anything by hand on these high production machines.
