In a lesson that Robb Flynn did for the song “Locust”, he said they tune 40 cents sharp from Drop B because it seems to hit a sweet spot for the harmonics and overall tone in that tuning.

Lol, I've had a 5150 for 15 years, and I've always just said "yep, this sounds exactly like Machine Head's tone" every time I plugged it up. It's a super easy tone to get... which is cool since it's really good. I can tell there's some small differences due to mixing and recording, but the character is just super obvious and totally there. After watching this video I know why... I am usually playing Ibanez RG's with EMG's through an SD-1 into a modded 5150 into a 5150 cab loaded with V30s (those sheffields sucked).

I remember when Robb got his first 5150. He heard my guitarist at the time Devin Walker's 5150. Devin got one of the first ones in the Bay Area. Robb heard it right after he got it and bought one for himself. The First 5150's are not the same amp as the new ones. Peavey changed the amps a little while after they came out. How they changed I cant tell because I dont know. If I remember correctly Robb used Devin's 5150 on Burn My Eyes also. That 5150 sounds different than any other 5150 I've ever heard.

I love hearing origin stories of bands that I like. Especially regarding their gear and stuff like that. So this is very cool, thank you for sharing this! The old 5150s with the block letter front are actually exactly the same as the lighter ones and the current age 6505. The reason they sounded “better“ in most peoples opinion is because of the Sylvania tubes that they shipped with originally. They are commonly regarded as some of the best sounding NOS tubes you can put in an amp. Around the time they switched to the script front is roughly around the same time the NOS Sylvania tubes started becoming in short supply, so I believe they started shipping them out with Sovtek tubes if I’m not mistaken. Move forward to today, and if you play on an older 5150 of either block letter or script in comparison to a newly manufactured 6505, the old 5150 is going to sound a bit different and arguably “better”. It’s not because of any differences in the design. But this is because as the components in an amp age, they start sounding a bit different. The general consensus is that older tube amps start sounding better with age. The components age and drift a bit and they start to sound a bit warmer and looser. That’s with any amp. So if you take any amp that was manufactured 15 or 20 years ago and play on it compared to a newly manufactured version, the older one is pretty much always going to sound better for this reason.

Great vid once again! Usually when talking about 5150/6505 mods the most common two I've bumped into are bias mod and midrange EQ mod. On midrange mod the 50k mid pot is replaced with either 25k or 22.5k pot, which give lower sweep on mids. That could explain the midrange on MH's tone in combination of Tubescreamer.

Since you've mentioned it I'll share my knowledge: for their latest albums (at least from The Blackening) they're tuned to Drop B with the A set to 450 Hz. If trying to tune to this with a regular pedal tuner all the strings should be tuned so they're all exactly between Drop B and Drop C. Never tried to use this tuning with Davidian or other older songs but I assume it should be something similar. Cheers from Italy Ola, keep up the good work!

I heard from a reasonably credible source that the 5150 in question was modded by Todd Langner here in the Bay Area. Langner worked at ADA for a while. Allegedly, Langner had a big part to play creating the ADA MP-1. Then he started modded amps, then briefly came out with his own line of amps. Awesome stuff too!

Microphones sounds different too, i have 2 legit sm57 and they sound a little different.

I remember it was a HZ H2 with a lot of boost (by MM-04?) when he started with ESP. His Jackson had j-50BC pickup and JE-1000 booster. Both are very close to each other. Vintage gain pickup + build in gain booster. The ESP ALX is quite simillar to HZ H2, same for the guitar preamp of the set compared with the MM-04. At least you can also get close results with any passive pickup + more gain in modern amps or TS9 support. His tone is also mid focused and sounds more like "oldschool" 80's. If you ask me, it's nothing special and the method was very common 30 years ago. Everything else is coming from his playing style, which is also more dirty compared to other fast guitar player.
