MacBook Pro 2021 - Student Perspective!

Ғылым және технология

Check out MotionVFX! motionvfx.sjv.io/rnLeNQ // The new MacBook Pro 2021 models, specifically the 14" are fantastic for not only creative work, but also some student workflows as well. But SHOULD a student spend north of $2000 USD for one of these chunky devices? In this video I go over what makes the MacBook Pro 14" and 16" attractive/unattractive to most students, what kind of student should go with something like this AND compare the M1 Pro 8-Core vs the M1 Pro 10-Core (two of the most common, stock MacBook Pro 14" options). Hopefully by the end of this you have determine whether spending the extra money is worth it to you, OR if going with something like the MacBook Air M1 is more of the move!

As a COMM student, upgrading from a 2015 MB Pro Retina, even the new baseline 14" is a breath of fresh air. At least in my area of study, we do a lot of media/content creation, and we use Adobe CC software all the time. It's to the point where I look forward to excuses for using it (finals definitely have given me more than enough). Would definitely recommend this to students in similar majors, thanks for the vid!

I really like your reviews from a student's perspective. This was a great review and I appreciate you comparing it to the Air and giving specifics of who this laptop is for in terms of majors and use. That 8 versus 10 people analogy for CPU was brilliant 👏🏽

The base model 16" has compared to base model 14": Small advantages: - higher resolution - longer battery life - larger trackpad - 2 more CPU and GPU cores - better cooling system - bigger speakers - more powerful charger Big advantage: - Larger display will make multitasking easier, watching movies or playing games feel more immersive. Also often less bad for your posture compared to looking at a smaller screen. People could use an external monitor, but because of the beautiful new display at 120hz you're now more likely to not use some 1080p 60hz external monitor. Buying a new external monitor with similar display quality can also be costly. Disadvantages: - $500 more expensive - Carrying a bigger and heavier device IMO: the 16" is a better deal for most people who can afford to pay $500 more and can carry a bigger device. The physical size might make it look less optimal for traveling with however it has a larger trackpad/display/speakers/battery which reduces the need for external mouse/display/speakers or battery charger. A better cooling system will also make less noise, so you wont bother people around you during heavy workload.

Meanwhile the 4 working people in my mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15 inch are ready to retire 😅 ordered a 16 inch one with the Max chip. I love the display size. I’m an engineering student and work for my dad. I’m using it for all things, education, design, video production etc. the Max is probably overkill for me, but I do love to use my gear for a longer time until they broke or can’t perform anymore. I’ve spent a lot of money for it, but I used my current MacBook for nearly 10 years.I had a 4 year break due to my medical condition and I hope the new year will start great with an awesome MacBook to get back to work. Great Video, love your content !

watching on my new m1 pro 14inch Macbook pro in space grey. I am loving working on this for my studies. Got it as in September 2021 I am off to film school and need an easily portable laptop for daily commuting and one that will handle 4k editing. I have the standard 16gb ram which is working great for me, I am currently on chrome with 29 tabs open and this power house is juggling them all perfectly. It is the fastest machine I have owned and worth the 2 grand imo. I am able to do everything on it and working is just more enjoyable as a result. Great review, and as a fellow student, I agree with you totally. You have just gained a new sub!

Can't decide whether I should wait for M2 MacBook Air or MacBook Pro 14". Battery life and portability are important to me, but the great sound system and 120Hz display are very appealing as well. Would be nice if you can compare battery life between MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 14" for daily use (like web browsing, Zoom and KZread/Twitch watching).

13 Pro has the best battery life but $1700 for a basically a 5 year old laptop with a new chip isn’t gonna cut it (MBP 13 with equal 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM) - the Pro 14 offers a way better screen with miniLED and 120hz, a 1080p webcam, modern design, better speakers and more ports - feels like a more well rounded package. I’d rather invest in the 14 Pro and keep it for the long haul.

i opted for 14 inch mac pro just for 120 hz and yeah... it was insanely powerful, but it was also a drag to carry around anywhere or even hold in my hands. i just traded it today for a 16gb 512gb m2 air and im really happy at how portable and "fun-sized" my new mac is. 120hz is only good on ipad & iphone anyway- by the time apple correctly optimizes it for macs, it will probably be available on airs. (lets hope 🙏)

Also , my friend is using Macbook Pro 14 Base Model and when he opens 5-6 tabs or 7 in safari and nothing running in the background RAM usage is between 10-12.30 GB. Do you think it is normal or Macbook works like this .

Couple of notes air is 0.5 lb lighter and almost half price of of pro. The difference between 13.3 and 14” screen isn’t that big compared to 16” and 13” but 16” weigh a noticeable amount and required a bigger backpack. If I am moving around a lot between classes I wouldn’t want to lug the 16”. Also 13.3 inch is very usable once you learn to swipe left and right full screens with three fingers. If I am doing 5000++ lines of code I would want the largest screen possible but then again most assignments are not that big and I already have a dock with 27” screen that I can rotate vertically. Add that I take notes on iPad Pro which I also use a second display with the air give me a lot of screen space when using display(sidecar). If I am doing real light duty programming for the day I just take the iPad Pro and magic keyboard(most of my programming is on Linux server). So why get MacBook pro as a student? You really are heavy into multimedia production, or heavy going to need to gpu. You already know you need it otherwise as a student just get the air.

If your gonna use it mostly for studying I would rather purchase the mb air or pro 14. Owned several ipad and they are great tools but so looked to ipad OS and many time a hazzle to do the most simple tasks. But it's still an iPad but with a magic keyboard and an apple pen gen 2 they are awsome. But still take a mb over an iPad.

Honestly, if you like to have that reassurance with future proofing your laptop, I believe that spending the extra dough on the 14" MBP over the Air is worth it. (Mini LED, 120hz, better base with speakers, etc) (This is just my opinion though. The M1 Air is still an incredible piece of technology for the majority of people). I'm here still using my base model late 2011 MBP, which has lasted me until now (except for one time I had to replace the ram). I'm gonna be getting the 14" MBP today to finally replace it. Hopefully this one will last me a good while like the last.

I'm in exactly the same boat, will definitely not utilise the full power of the device, but want the thin bezels, mini-LED, ProMotion, can afford the base 14" if I really want to but I also know I'd be buying it because it's the new shiny thing. Only thing that's stopped me is the rumoured M2 Air coming in 2022 but current leaked renders show off-white bezels that look REALLY bad imo. So I'm torn

Unless you’re in engineering, Computer/ data science, or architecture or anything that you know that you’ll need a lot of power for EXTENDED periods of time, then get the M1 MBA. The only differences (for me) between the MBA AND MBP is that the pro has better battery, option to use multiple extended displays, and a fan to help with long work loads. The $300 to upgrade may or may not be worth the differences, but that is just my 1.5 cents.

It’s not about the power, everyone is hung up over the processor being everything - the screen has much better contrast, it’s 120hz, the 1080p webcam is actually decent, the speakers are phenomenal, the extra ports and MagSafe are great and the whole package feels modern and not a 2016 computer which you might already own. If you appreciate these things go for it, and keep it for many years to come, if you don’t then get the Air.

The only problem is if you want a larger screen you have to get the Pro model. That’s how Apple finesses everyone. If they made a 14-15 inch air it would be just perfect.

I agree I bought the 16 mb pro with no extra bells and whistles. But if the new air would had a 15inch display, 120 hz and came with 512gb storage. And it's much lighter I'll change in a heartbeat. I'll rather have the larger screen size in my 16 and also better ergonomics when writing alot vs the 14. Any day of the week. If one can't carry the 16 inch u need to work out. Owned the 2020 air also and yes it's a good computer but I truly hate the potato camera and also it felt not as premium as the pro does either. Lighter yes but then the 16 beats in everything else. It dosent last 16 hours either not near to that.
