MacBook Pro 2015 in 2021: Is It Still Worth Buying?

Macbook Pro 2015 in 2021 | 2015 MacBook Pro in 2021 | Macbook Pro 2015 in 2021 is Still Worth Buying? | The timing of this context is not a coincidence. Apple has already started to update their Mac lineup with their own - produced Silicon. M1 Macs are already out there and these machines are literally slaying Intel pieces as we speak. So, even the base MacBook Air will outperform this machine of mine for under a 1000$. And you have to invest at least 800$ for a decent Mid- 2015 MacBook Pro to secure a decent used one. So, is it still worth it?
It may not be future - proof at this point and to be quite brutally honest, I wouldn’t buy one at this point, but for what its sentimental value alone is worth and if you’re not 100% ready for Apple Silicon just yet, with all my heart, yeah, go for it! It’s one of a kind.

My 2015 macbook pro has been a beast. I have pushed it beyond the limit with intense Protools recordings, heavy data usage and overall used almost everyday. The hardware has been absolutely fine running multiple programs and plugins. I'm sure the M1 chip would be a nice performance boost but I really don't have any issues with my 2015 machine. Love the value I've gotten with this purchase when it was brand new in 2015.

I got the 13" one now from 2015. I got it for $350 from the Facebook marketplace. Nostalgia feeling. It has all of the ports on it, which heck, even the new ones that came out don't even have. I'm a graphic designer w/ a 2015 MacBook Pro, and I work on hi-res multipage layout print catalogs in Adobe InDesign. My layout files run from 250MBs to +300MBs with approx 1500 hi-res linked image files. I sometimes need to have several past catalogs open at the same time, and get occasional app crashes. It's frustrating but not to the point that I can't work around it. I also don't have a lot of scratch disk space with all those files living on my laptop. Though I couldn't honestly say if it was the MacBook or InDesign that can't handle the work load. I do SOME Photoshop work to mainly clip out backgrounds from products, but those files usually aren't bigger than 50MB max. I never have problems w/ Photoshop, but my work in it isn't very resource taxing. Don't know if that helped, but should give you an idea of how it works with big image files.

I bought a 2015 MacBook Pro 13" recently here in Japan. I has a very small hard disk. I also have a late 2011 Mac book pro 13" which seems better. It has a dvd drive which I need, and a bigger hard disk. Both run High Sierra as the maximum OS so why you mention Big Sur is a mystery to me. I checked out the new M1/2 MacBooks in the Apple store and saw what I call the 'dustbin of progress' (a quote from Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'). The 'more is better' approach - where will to end? More more more from the back room boys whose job it is to provide 'more'. More subdivisions of the System Preferences, more this, more that. I'm glad I have a MacBook from 2010 running osx 6 where `I can use the superb`AppleWorks suite (aka Claris Works) now metamorphosed into Libre Office and not be to equalled yet.

Beware that the 13 inch and 15 inch are totally different machines. Where the 13 inch is an excellent buy in 2022, the 15 inch is not so much, especially when taking price into consideration. The 13 inch does 300 bucks in excellent condition, where the 15 inch is usually priced twice that second hand. Why is the 13 inch better? Because the 13 inch is utilising a more modern 14nm Intel that combined with a 75Wh battery holds up pretty well throughout the day. The 15 inch holds old 22nm tech, and a battery killing Nvidia alongside. So expect the battery on a 15 inch to die twice as fast. Also the 13 inch is much nicer in appearance, its looks will remain the best ever for some time (not beaten since), the 15 inch has certain obesity to its appearance. Last advice: run these machines on Mojave. That way they feel nearly as fast as a M1 on Big Sur/Monterey, and the look of the OS is cleaner as well, not the Candy Crush mess and slowness of Monterey. I've yet to come by a program that does not run on Mojave. Also these machines run Windows 10 perfectly in dual boot. Combined with USB-A and thunderbolt, these have some serious benefits above the current models.

@@alexisl.3738 It all depends whether you need 4K and if you want fast rendering with tons of effects. I don't use FX, just basic 4K rendering, and then a final render takes like twice the run time of the video. Thats fine for me. In 1080p render time is like run time. The editing itself goes smooth as the internal drive is like 1.2 GB/s, which is fast enough. I prefer the cooler running 13 inch with the 14nm chip.

I had a 2017 Macbook Pro touchbar and it was sh*t. Broke after only 4 years (I said bye bye to the $2,000 I spent on it plus accessories). First it was the screen being scratched by the keys when closed, then the keyboard began double typing, then the battery issues began after I upgraded to Catalina, then after that the LCD screen just went nuts; when you use it for too long those faint grey lines would show on the bottom of the screen and over time it just got worse. Since it was out of warranty I was charged $200 to replace the battery (had it replaced twice because the first one wasn't original and the darned thing just wouldn't recognize it) while they wanted $500 for the replacement of the LCD screen (which was a design flaw and it wasn't a guarantee it was going to permanently fix the problem). In the end, I sold it for a very low price to rid of the stress. I'm now thinking of getting a 15" MBP 2015 one.

lol my wife's 2016 got almost the same issues. She had it right at released -2016, and luckily bought apple care for 3 years. In 2019, the keyboard and other stuff were broken down (Idk what was happening), but Apple replaced literally everything inside that macbook except the back lid and the screen. It was fun how that Apple staff said: Oh our technicians replaced the keyboard, the main, the hard drive, ... hmm seems like they replaced everything, and the only remaining part was our scratched bottom. We sold it right away when the new M1 pro released, which covered half of the cost for the new one.

@@plasticdope The 2016-2017 macbook pros had lots of issues, mostly design flaws, that Apple refused to take responsibility for. Good thing you had Apple care on your wife's machine. I ended up getting a used 2020 Macbook Pro a few weeks ago. Didn't bother getting a brand new one. Hope the M1 works out for you. I still can't let go of using Intel processor-based machines.

@@jacquie.ec.2012 yeah we were lucky. I also bought an used M1 air recently cuz the price is at a sweet point thanks to the M2 release. Based on my workload, the M1 is good enough for everything, except one or two games that only compatible with Intel chip.

No one should ever buy a used 2017 MBP. If you have to get something that will run a 5K display, or do light video editing, buy the 2019. If that doesn’t matter, but the 2015.

Too old now in 2023. Will not be able to update MacOS for so much longer. Besides it doesn’t have AVX2-processor, which is a requirement if you need to run some Adobe-apps now. And the newer MacBook Pro:s you can’t upgrade from 2016 and later. How very stupid!
