One of the advantages of having a larger RAM is that lesser swapped memory from the SSD would be used - in the long run that leads to more wear for the internal SSD. In terms of performance, both 16 and 32 would seem fine - but you might want to check how much SSD memory is being used for daily use for both capacities

The only issue with 16gb of ram is that if you push your computer into needing to use swap memory, you will put wear and tare on your ssd. If you are continuously writing gigabytes and gigabytes of swap, you will have a much shorter lifespan on your computer than otherwise. I purchased the 16gb model and I immediately started using swap memory when I had three docker containers open, vscode, and a browser with a few tabs. The system can handle it seamlessly, but I was concerned about longevity. I returned it and upgraded to the 32gb model and never run into swap memory issues. To me, if you are someone who needs the power of the m1 pro, then you will probably be running enough programs to justify buying more ram to avoid swap usage. Additionally, if you are a developer, and doing anything with docker, please get at least 32gb.

what software, in what arch, do you usually run? I did some experiment on my mac mini with 8g and notice intensive memory swap (500gb within 15hrs) when I tried to install and run my development environment on it. Although the latest version supports arm64 already, they are yet able to migrate to latest in very near future and Rosetta 2 is the only option for now. Now since the machine only has 8g of ram, I cannot determine whether the memory swap happens due to the ram insufficiency, or it is caused by the Rosetta 2. Let me know if you have any thought. My list: 1. .Net Core 3.1 projects (6 instances at a time) 2. Node.js 12 (one instance at a time) 3. SQL Server

I've been going through many, many videos the whole day and you summed up the whole argument about extra RAM especially for people who don't do video editing(another reason I'm on this channel at the moment). Unless you have a lot of money to continuously experiment in the cloud, your laptop should be the place for good development and run some servers on containers. I was really hard pressed to decide on the size of RAM and I'm now fully convinced to go for it though it's going to be expensive.

Also though the M series chips are very efficient and effective though they use Swap memory. Also Apple don’t provide users to upgrade their RAM once they buy an M series laptop. A person’s needs might change after a year or so and when they might need that additional 16Gig RAM there’s no way to upgrade except for buying a new Macbook.

I completely disagree with your statement that 16GB is enough. I’m not sure why kind of VMs you are running, but when I spin up a Windows 11 VM in Parallels and have a couple tabs open on my M1 Pro 16” with 16GB of RAM, it gets up to 90% in use and shows yellow in Activity Monitor. For this reason, I’m upgraded to an M2 Max MacBook Pro this year with 32GB of RAM. I probably don’t need the extra GPU cores of the Max chip, but I like that it has twice the memory speed compared to the M2 Pro variant. After realizing that I made a mistake with my M1 Pro, I would rather have more power than I need and not use it.

If buying MacBook pro: go for 32GB Ram Minimum Else buy an upgraded 16gb 1TB MacBook Air TLDR Apple has the balls to sell an inferior laptop(air compared to pro) at a premium price. Apple's $400 margin is youtubers paradise (generate more views)! Air USP: design and lightweight Air cons: same as USP, less ports, inferior everything (configuration) Air attracts with sleek design and low price, but when you configure it to your liking, the price flirts with MacBook 14” pro. Once you buy it, you automatically sit and want to justify your decision and sell your opinion to everyone. Human nature! There is a lot of debate over 16gb vs 32gb and pundits sitting here explaining how 32 is an overkill youtubers generating insane view on just this simple dispute Why 32gb not future proofing How beautiful and fast the swap is and yada yada how cool is unified memory 16gb unified memory is like 500gb non unified memory Imagine this- Ram cannot be upgraded ever Hdd cannot be upgraded ever File sizes are increasing by the day Need for RAM increasing by the day for most users the pro itself is an overkill So if you are going for the overkill, then better overkill with style! If you spending $2699 for a laptop, which you plan to keep for next 5-7 years you cant decide if you want to spend $400 more for more ram? Thats just ~14pc more (400 plus taxes) Typically You spend >50 bucks on a date night ~Spend >50 if ordering food from outside ~400 for a short vacay Double it all if you have a partner ~100 on monthly car insurance ~300 on monthly car payments But no, we want a debate on $400 after spending $2700.. Get 32GB Minimum… period!

I can predict that whatever you buy today will be slower and less robust than what you can during the next technology refresh. Programs are bigger, data files are larger, and new applications are being created all of the time that operate better (as a general rule) with newer technology. HOWEVER, with limited resources, sometimes you have to plan for the future today to make sure you have the right capability. Since RAM can not be upgraded, special thought must be given to this feature. Over the past 5-10 years the amount of RAM that systems have been using is steadily increasing. Whether a PC or Mac based system, having more RAM is one of the single biggest impacts to make a system faster. I would advocate that if someone is on the fence about the need for 32GB of RAM they should do it and move on. You will need more RAM with your applications over the lifetime of the unit. Most companies have a set lifetime of usage planned for a laptop computer. If the lifetime is 5 years, get the 32GB RAM system. If the life time planned is 2-3 yrs, maybe the 16GB might be OK. The leader has spoken.

I totally disagree with this statement "do not compare these 16GB Macbooks with other 16GB machines". When you run a VM and you assign it say 8GB of RAM, the VM does not care whatsoever what magic RAM you got there. It just wants the 8GB RAM, fast or slow doesn't matter. So yes, RAM quantity does matter no matter what these clowns keep telling you. For any heavy multitasker its an easy recommendation to go with 32GB of RAM. 16GB is for those who mostly do 1 heavy task at a time. If you want to do more, definitely get 32GB of RAM. Max chip only helps with graphics related tasks, so for many users it won't matter since the CPU is the same on both Pro and Max.

This computer has served me well but over the last two years it has become very difficult to use. I do not do much video editing just a very small amount for personal use I primarily have seven or eight tabs open at a time and I’m doing zoom calls and I have spreadsheets open and I have a contact management system called Hubspot open. Because I keep my computers for so long my thought was I needed to buy a top-of-the-line new MacBook because Apple will not let me upgrade ram later so I bought the 64 GB of RAM now after hearing your video I’m thinking this was way too much. However the only reason I might be right is I don’t know what my needs will be in five years or six years and I may need the ram then. It is really a shame the Apple will not let you upgrade or switch out an SSD drive or upgrade ram later. I can’t return the computer now it’s been over a month that I haven’t even hooked it up yet I just have been busy and I have been not feeling well. Anyway thank you for your video

Video is great but it is halted by "bad audio" it is better than most setups but with some adjustments and mabye a shotgun or lavialer mic will help otherwise great video. Noise gate if on is also very aggressive. makes you sound slightly like a robot.

I am a programmer and i bought base variant of MBA which is 8GB ram variant with 256Gb space. I feel it is more than enough for me to work even with base variant and not feel like going for 16gn ram variant.

Certainly that’s enough for most programmers. Congratulations on your new laptop.

Thanks for the nice video, Currently I am using M1 Air, 2020 model, with 8GB and 255GB and I am about to purchase M1 Pro, 14" variant with 1Tb storage and 32 GB of RAM, for storage I am very much clear that, 1 TB should be there, but about RAM after watching the video still not able to make decision. Please help, tasks i want to perform on daily basis because in current Macbook Air, some heavy flutter projects took lot of time to compile, and after while compilation it consume all the resourses and sometime laptop lags in switching tabs and other tasks, so that time I feel I need a better machine, 1. Android/iOs/ Flutter Development (Primary task) 2. Video Editing basic level So i need to go with 32GB or not, because the difference is 500$ but if after purchase it will create trouble then it will cost a lost ,because i will regret always. Please help..

there is absolutely no "fact" in your statement. It all depends on the person buying it and their needs.
