MacBook Pro 13 A1708 2017 (flexgate repair) no backlight at 90 degree angle

Ғылым және технология

The "factory defect" that is very common in the A1707, A1708, and A1706 is when you open the LCD more than 90 degrees, the backlight stops working and you would think that the LCD is not working.
This video shows you how to fix this issue and how to diagnose it.

    This are common problem with Macbook Pro’s 2016, 2017,2018 and even up to 2019. Apple only covers free repair program on 2016 only, yet even the 2017-2019 have exact symptoms they won’t fix it under their repair program. I wish you live nearby as I have at least 3 macbooks with this issue. Excellent job on the repair!

    Hi, thanks. I already explained this in the comments for some one else, the flex cable for the backlight goes under the LCD and to remove it you need to remove the very delicate thin LCD and try not to damage it with over heating, so I think this is the best way to fix it. Regardless of that, as I explained that the flex is short and that’s what causes the problem, and by doing this method I am adding more length to prevent this issue in the future.

    Hi, all of the work was done under the microscope and recorded with a camera that is attached to the third eye in the microscope (trinocular microscope) Back in the days before I could afford microscopes I used to solder under two magnifying glasses, but it was tough to work like that. And in this flex cable the rails are very small that even if you could solder under the magnifying glass you need a very thin soldering head. I would say it’s always fun to try new things. I know I did and it got me where I am now.))

    Hang on a sec i didn't realise that half way through you need the smallest screwdriver in the world. In 5 more years i'll need a microscope just to find the screwdriver! So. i could only do what i could without that screwdriver. I found a fold / crease in one of the cables but i couldn't actually see a break even with the microscope. I tinned across this area with solder but no jumpers, it was one of the wider of the 4 cables. I think the other side also needs doing but i wanted to get the display off to take a better look. I only had a Stanly blade (box cutter blade). After trying this one cable i put a strip of sellotape over the area and put it all back together. I usually use an external monitor, i bought the 15" touchbar this way to save money. Problem is doing osx updates. When you get to the next step you can not use external monitor! Anyway. It's stopped flickering and now only one big strip centre left not working but before i couldn't read the screen at all, sometimes i could see a bit of it between the flickering but not really and not often. Now i can read most of it. I'll have to get the tiniest screwdriver in the world and try again to fix the last part of the screen / cables. I was surprised how strong the flex cable was considering i only had an old box cutter blade! Nice!

    Well, I would love to replace the full cable but, you see the cable if you saw the disassembly of the screen the backlight cable goes under the screen and in order to get to it you need to remove the LCD matrix from the case and not damage it and then you can replace the full cable. See it’s very easy so I though to my self why go the easy route, let’s make this interesting and do this instead.

    Hi, you can use a jumper wire from a speaker coil. or you can go online and search for a jumper wire for microsoldering. the thickness should be around 0.010 0.030mm the lines on the sides are ground so you will need just one will be enough. the thicker rails on the flex should be jumpered with thicker jumper wire because they are power rails.

  • @iTouch-repair

    @iTouch-repair

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s ok))) The flex cable goes underneath the LCD, and to get to the flex I need to remove the LCD panel from the cover (the LCD is glued to the cover and it’s very expensive) and then try not to damage the backlight film layers and remove the flex cable. If I could replace it I would’ve done it, it’s much easier to desolder couple of pins and solder them back than this.

    Hi, as for the flex cable, I only replaced one. Sometimes the camera flex gets damaged and you replace it when damaged. As for the glue, it's a super glue that you can find in any hardware store. I extend the flex by about 2-3cm that way it doesn't get damaged next time.

    Hi, as I explained before for many comments, the flex goes under the LCD, so in order to fully replace it I need to remove the screen from the lid. Another reason for going super hard is, the issue in the first place occurred the flex is a little shorter causing this issue, and I am adding length to the flex to avoid this issue being repeated.

    Why would you not just replace the entire cable with the new one, which you had in your possession? This does not seem like the way Apple would repair it if you brought it in shop. While it seems that you are very skilled and have professional tools, this is a ridiculous amount of difficult work, it seems the new joint be a weak point for future failure.

    Hi, long story short, the flex cable goes underneath the screen, so to replace it from the roots you will need to remove the screen from the lid and replace it (you can search how to replace a screen on these models). If you take it to Apple, be ready to pay big money for this repair, they had their repair program for this issue I think now they closed it.

    I disagree with your opening statement that this is caused by open and closing the lid way to much. I have a 2010 MacBook that I can assure you has been opened and closed way more that a 2017 and it has no backlight issues. This is clearly a design issue from Apple for making the backlight flex cable a few mm’s to short. This is not because the user opens and closes his MacBook.

    Exactly. There is no valid reason for display cables to get damaged from opening and closing the lid. Should be able to open and close the lid millions of times with the only thing wearing out being the hinges over a long period of wear and tear. This is one of many intentional design flaws to prematurely provoke customers into getting expensive repairs done.
