Which MacBook is YOUR favourite? And, if you don't own one, why not?

I would do the update to 16 Gb as I keep my MBA for closer to 10 years. 2015 is still going. Slowly with 8 Gb but still a functional portable second computer

I’m dying for a MacBook Air. Love Apple, have iPhone and iPads but never any computer from them. Torn on 8 vs 16 and M2 vs M3. This is super helpful, thank you! I’m not going to game on it. I have a gaming comp for that. But I’d like to get into photography and video editing. I’m like a 10 tabs in browser kinda girl lol

How does the 15" Air compare to the 2019 16" Pro, Pete? Obviously lighter, but what else? Trying to justify the switch - mostly for sofa browsing and business travel, occasional photo editing in Google photos😉

If you take the time to tidy up your photo/video library and delete unneeded files or save them on an external SSD/HDD then you can get away with a lot less space. Personally I like to have 512GB for my laptop though because it allows me to have enough free space to temporarily store videos from my GoPro or drone while I am editing them before I delete them or put them on an external drive.

I probably could get away with the base models but I a MacBook Air M3 8CPU/10GPU 16GB 512G for $700 BRAND NEW. I couldn’t let deal pass me by.

It has been 3.5 years since I bought my base M1 MB Pro 13 and RAM usage has got better with optimisations and more apps being native to Apple Silicon. So for me, 8GB has been enough and now I have spare capacity, so I do not envisage needing more. Where the Air line kills the premium ultrabook competition is the exceptional value of the base models. For example, the XPS 14 (2024) starts at £1600 versus Air £1100, and if you only have a £1100 budget, well no chance of getting a 2024 XPS 14. Dell instead offers an 8GB XPS 13 from 2023 but that has Iris iGPU which is a massive downgrade. Of course, MS understands basic demandside economics and also has an 8GB/256GB base Surface Laptop 6 for £1200 for people with lower budgets, and also Enterprise customers that have little need for more than 8GB and can save their business millions. So, for most I would recommend the base model, which I think drives 60% of MB Air sales as obviously price is more important to most people than RAM and/or storage for the casual ultrabook user (see Chromebooks that 99% of have 8GB or less). As you add spec the less value the Air becomes, but paying £200 for 16GB also bags you 25% more GPU cores, so that is a very reasonable cost bearing in mind the GPU upgrade is £100 on its own. But you do miss out on the deals the base models get. I have already seen £100 off the M3 MB Air list price. If you have high disposable income, just buy what you need. The base M3, MB Pro 14 is for people with a larger budget that want a few luxury features compared to the MB Air, like miniLED, 120Hz, more IO, higher screen brightness, better speakers, a fan, etc. The 8GB model will be fine for ultrabook use and I have already seen discounts of £250, so £1350 is fanatstic value for a premium ultrabook compared to rivals. For Pro users the base M3 chip is not for you and you should start with the MB Pro 14 (M3 Pro). And buy according to your needs.
