Interesting! I have not used paint pots in many years, but I definitely remember them having somewhat different textures depending on the colors. I remember having a brown one and an acid green one that had a thinner texture than others, and I had a white one that was thick and always made shadows vibrant. Never owned the two you have though. Hmm 🤔 it will be interesting to see you test a new Soft Ocher against it, see if age makes a difference. Since I’ve started watching your videos I’ve been wanting to go back to paint pots again, so I’m very curious for part 2 😁

This is such a good video. I tried by your recommendation the pain pot (paintry)- my sister gave me her's because she don't use it anymore (thus it is an old one) and although eyeshadows stay a bit better it still fades after 2-3 hours. I have the painterly but is close to a year old and it is very opaque on my eyes. Haven't noticed patchiness but then I'm half blind when doing my eyeshadow anyway... I also use the Bare Minerals gen nude in the lightest shade and like it as well. It's a creamier texture than the paint pot, and depending on the look I'm going for I rarely set it and doesn't dry down too fast. May do a comparison between the two if I can remember when I get ready in the morning. Curious to see your outcome with part 2.

The paint pots I do use crease a little halfway thru my day, so I'm not sure how these would work as a primer even though I know these have holy grail status for many. 🤔 as always, much love anette. 🖤

I do think the reason I like them so much as primers is because I have dry skin - they don't crease on me but have the consistency of being a 'creasey' - or siliconey - product shall we say so I can see them creasing on people with normal or combo skin and maybe not working at all for people with oily lids. Depending on your style though you might still like them as primer, like if you prefer a more undone look (to be fair I also like a grungey look and I actually enjoy some fading or creasing throughout the day.) Anyway that was a rant. Groundwork is SO GREAT though. I also use it as cream contour and it is *perfect* in every way

  • @AnnettesMakeupCorner

When you use them as eyeshadows, do you put any powders on top? I'm guessing no and thats why they crease. With the ones I use, I obviously put shadows on top which makes them not crease as its basically the same as setting it. I dont think it would b an issue

I did not notice any difference once the eyes were done as a eye primer. The only think I found different was when she first applied it. The painterly was pink and the soft ochre was yellow based. So if just want to cover veins around the eyes, or even out the color, depending on your skin base (yellow, pink, or neutral), you may prefer one over the other.

  • @AnnettesMakeupCorner

I feel like it was easier to see in real life when applying them. It always looks more even on both eyes after putting on mascara and liners and stuff. But I will never use painterly again. Of course the color of them will change the color of the shadows a bit, but it was night and day on how it applied on each side. And I even think a lot of people have given eyeshadow palettes bad reviews because theyve used painterly and the shadows just havent cooperated it that primer as well. Just my opinion tho

Depends what kind of looks you normally do. For more neutral looks I would go for painterly and for colorful looks I would do soft ochre. They are different formulas, and the color of them shouldnt be the deciding factor.

Do you use colorful shadows? A lot of people have told me painterly is better for neutrals and painterly works best for bright colors. Makes sense to me. I way prefer the color of painterly and I think soft ochre is too yellow as well. My shadows just perform better for me using it, so I dont want to switch. I dont really find them to be any different regardless of how long its been open for, but that could be because mine is basically always fresh cause I use it every day

I'm cool toned so started using painterly back in 2017 to see what the fuss was about and I have to say it was a game changer for my eyeshadow looks, so to see you having issues using it compared to the soft ochre surprised me, as my eye makeup matches yours on the soft ochre side when I use my painterly paint pot. So I'm wondering if it's a newer batch issue? I do know that skin types can also play a factor in how products work for us all, it's so hard when ppl ask for recommendations because there is no one size fits all. I'm also now concerned that they've messed with the paint pot formula, because nothing else compares, so definitely interested in seeing how you find a new soft ochre xx

If I’m remembering correctly then she has used both. I wonder also if Mac did a formula change and your soft ochre is the old formula. It could also be that it’s dried out a bit and that’s made it more opaque bc it has less water in it.

The thing is, I think there can be inconsistencies in batches. Not necessarily just bc one is older, but because they’re made in different batches. Imagine if the dude working didn’t add all of just one ingredient. Or they didn’t let it mix for as long. There’s any number of things that could happen during the process of making these that would make them different. You could get another painterly and it could be from another batch and be different. Especially when products have been around for a long time, when multiple batches are being made... the chances of it being made in 2019 the exact same as when they first came Out with these, years ago.
