13:25 - Mac OS Standard is the old (System 3 to Mac OS 8.0) HFS file system. Mac OS Extended is the HFS+ file system introduced in Mac OS 8.1.

HFS+, which debuted with OS 8.1 in 1998 was a more advanced version of HFS, which had been the Mac file system since Mac OS 3. It added journaling support, support for larger file via increased block address of 32 bits in length (vs 16 bit lengths in HFS) , support for Unicode file naming, and support for hard links to directories. Since MacOS 10.13 (Sept, 2017) Apple has since switched to the Apple File System (APFS) as the default file system for system drives on Mac desktop and Laptop machines (as well as for IOS/IPad-OS devices) which adds a lot new features such cloning files without need to use twice the space for duplicate (cloned) files, file system snapshot support, native full-disk encryption support, data integrity protection via checksums, support for multiple logical drives in one container (i.e. multiples hard drives/SSD drives are paired together so they appear as one single drive to the system (aka as one volume) with the free space of each drive being treated as one big block. Note that Time Machine backup drives must be formatted with the older HFS+ due to time machine not being compatible with APFS (at least yet) due Time Machine’s current reliance on directory hard link support which APFS does not support. Also, any external Mac formatted drive you wish to use with Linux (using the open source HFS+ linux driver) or Windows (using either the HFS+ Windows driver either from Apple or from a third party) should be formatted as HFS+ not APFS, as no APFS drivers exists for Windows or Linux yet (AFAIK). For regular cross-platform moving of files, I would skip HFS+ and just format the drive in NTFS as stable full read-write NTFS drivers are currently available for both Linux and Mac (not that out of the box MacOS still only supports ready-only NTFS access currently but third-party stable read/write drivers are available for the Mac that enable write support (and some external drives manufacturers include read-write NTFS Mac drivers on their NTFS formatted external drives such as Seagate.

Heh, I just spent about a week dicking around with a 2006 MacBook Pro, trying desperately to install Snow Leopard on a new blank drive (old drive was toast). No dual layer burner, and the drive couldn't read ANY of the discs I threw at it. I ended up Target Disk Mode'ing it to another Mac, partitioning the new drive with three partitions (2 small, 1 large). I put a Tiger install DVD image on the first partition, and a Snow Leopard DVD image on the second partition. Booted up, installed Tiger, did some updates, ran the Snow Leopard installer, rebooted, installed, rebooted and boom, nice new fresh Snow Leopard on the system. edit: I have a Tangerine clamshell and I've got the same (even more extreme) cracking around the Apple logo. It's ugly, but oh well.

As Gravarty mentioned, take a look at the MacOS9Lives discussion forum (I was "iMic" on there, and helped develop the first modified version of the Mac OS ROM for this purpose). They've come a long way with running Mac OS 9 on newer hardware.

Either it's already done or you forgot to mount the drive. In case it isn't, the first step is to go to the utilities folder and click drive setup. Follow the instructions and you should be able to see the hard drive on the desktop. Then you click install, and of all of the bizarre questions it will ask if you want to continue or quit. You want to quit. Then restart the computer. It should load OS 9 from the hard drive.

iBook G3 900Mhz is the fastest iBook that can natively boot OS9. If you want to run OS9 on a portable G4 you have to get a Powerbook G4 Titanium. iBook G4's and aluminum Powerbook G4's can't boot OS9 outside of classic mode inside of OSX.

The best Mac laptop for OS 9 is the Powerbook G4 Titanium DVI - It was the very last (and most powerful) Apple laptop that could run OS9 natively without using classic mode in OS X.

Classic Mode in OS X only works if OS 9 is installed natively, yeah? That’s how I’ve seen it work.

I figured it would. The old systems were flexible like that. I did edit more stuff out, but there was a part where I attempted it a second time, but I don't think I showed it. It was spitting out permissions errors but… well, stay tuned for part 2 ; )

Watching this a year late, curious if you managed to get it working. Anyway, macos9 was a quite straight forward simple os, it could be installed by simply copying the system folder. But it couldn't run unless the "macos9 drivers" (optional since osX) were installed while formatting the target disk. Also, wasn't a good idea having 9 and X on the same partition, as it could lead to errors. You brought up some good memories anyway eheheh.
