My advice is to get the mini and save the money to get a 4k or 8k monitor which can be used for any future device either windows or Mac. The mini has the ports and it's cheaper

@@SuperGunzy It may depend on the country you live in, in Germany for example you get the 16 GB Ram iMac für 1800€, the Mac Mini with 16 GB Ram + Magic Keyboard + Magic Mouse costs 1080€ For 720€ you could even get 2 4k screens (even if they arent the best, I doubt most people would notice the difference without a direct comparison)

Thanks Vik! That’s awesome! I love the mini but sometimes I do wish I got the MBP instead so I could use it w the monitor but also detach it to use as a laptop when I’m out of the studio. Might have to grab another MBP when they announce the next gen!

Will Mac Mini play 4K/HDR MKV files? I’ve been backing-up and moving my physical 4K and Blu-rays to digital with full disc back-ups.

I’m leaning towards the Mac Mini M1. I like having options when it comes to monitors. Plus, it appears that I can also hook up my Cintiq tablet to the Mini.

That’s right. If the monitor messes up, at least you wouldn’t have to send the whole unit for repairs. Unfortunately, that’s the risk with all-in-ones.

As much as I would LOVE to have a new red iMac, I'm glad I got the Mac Mini. I'm not a tech or computer geek but I do like customizing exactly what monitor display, keyboard, trackpad, and mouse I want. My larger-than-24-inch monitor is mounted on the wall in front of my desk, which gives me more desk real estate. I also teach in various locations. I hook up my laptop to a large screen TV at the location. I use Google Slides, play videos, set up online games, etc. for my classes. With the Mac Mini I have the option of bringing it (and a keyboard/mouse) instead of my laptop. I haven't done this yet, as I just got the Mac Mini, but I do like having these options!

Excellent points! For your setup, I agree that the mini definitely makes more sense! Being able to customize all the peripherals for the mini is so fun. I’ve had the mini for several months and I’m still like “ooh I need to try out THAT keyboard now!” I’m obsessed lol

I wanna purple one! But I'm going to go with the mini as the low-cost intro to the M1. I have the peripherals, though nothing fancy. I can upgrade those later or just go for an iMac. Later. Thanks for the video. You pretty well echoed my thinking.

I was waiting for the M1 iMac announcement to decide. I think I'm better off with the Mac Mini. It has the ports that I need and I already have a Magic keyboard and MX Master mouse. I’m not seeing the style appeal in this new iMac and where is the space gray option?

Here’s an idea about cameras: put the camera about 1/3 down, right behind the screen. How cool would it be to look at people straight in the eye when you’re in a meeting?

Thanks for posting. I’m toying with letting my 2014 MBP take a break and stop trying to edit Blackmagic 4K BRAW and get a new M1 series Mac. Mac Mini 16g and various sized storage... was thinking go big.. but now thinking that get a M1 for the next year and next year get a Mac Pro M1x/M2/M2x what ever it may be fore a heavy hitting computer... Though the imac I would probably use for more longer than the mini so probably go 16g/1tb vs a 16g/256 or 16g/500 new/refurbished Mac mini. I also have the Dell Ultrasharp 4K 28”? 29”. 27”? What ever it is.. I would say it’s OK and at $500 it’s pretty underwhelming. So if you want a new display and 4k or 4.5k? Definatly just getting the imac... now any clue if the new imac M1 is targetable? As in when you get a M1x/M2 next year can you thunderbolt to the your old 2021 imac M1 and use it as a monitor for your new M2x Mac Pro?

I'm not 100% sure about this but I'm pretty sure this new iMac will not be able to be used as an external monitor :( that only worked on older iMacs. Not even my 2015 iMac allows that, unfortunately.

I really want the M1 Mac Mini because I can pick and choose a bigger display, a better mouse and custom keyboard. I also grabbed a DSLR I can now stream with. Seems like the iMac is better suited for college students and perhaps not so much for Music Producers / Heavy content creators. Also, I’d love to know if the dell monitor you picked up is curved? How are you liking it so far? Thanks for all the videos covering the M1 Macs. Keep it up 👍🏽

Yah customizing the mini is so much fun! I enjoy the challenge of it. My Dell monitor is flat, not curved, and I really like it! I tried like 8 monitors and ended up keeping the Dell. Maybe I’ll do a follow up video talking more about just the monitor since I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it!

I purchased a refurbed Mac Mini M1 with 2TB storage (sound guy with lots of sound samples). Added the Dell P3222qe 32" display with a nice 0.18159 mm pixel pitch and a 16:9 aspect ratio. I couldn't be happier. All in for $2300. Granted the display is not glossy nor is it a "retina" display as was the iMac that this replaced, but I don't sit 12 inches from the screen either. From native to almost any scaling on the monitor the image is excellent! I looked at the new iMac M1, but could not justify the price when compared to the Mac Mini with a very nice 32" display.

Thank i am going to go with the Imac with 16gb ram and 1tb ssd. Definitely time for an upgrade from my 2009 base model Imac. I need something to edit my 4k videos from my DJI mini 2 drone. I like the size of my old 21.5 imac and when they do release the bigger iMac with more power it will probably be out of my price range. I did look at the mini but found it hard to see a monitor that is as good as the ones in iMacs plus everything works so seamlessly in the imacs. If this lasts half the time of my old iMac i will be happy.

Defo getting an Airtag. Still glad I got the Mac Mini because I only have space for one monitor and need to share it with the windows laptop I use for my day job. Really like the colours though.

Nice comparison. For those who value that quality apple display, are there any recommendations you can make? I've watched close to ten reviews of the new iMac and you are the first to bring up the quality of the mac monitors. I really dislike the white bezel and was looking to going with the Mac mini but I love my current iMac's display and wouldn't want something noticeably less in quality.

The true is nothing has the same pixel density that Apple screens have, and if they do they are probably crazy expensive. Apple can do it because of how much they mass produce them so the prices can be more affordable.

The Mac mini is in my guest room, which I spend a lot of time in. But I have some rooms downstairs that do not yet have a computer. New iMacs will go nicely down there.

Knew someone would post a video on this sooner or later. 👍 I brought the M1 Mac Mini (still waiting for it to arrive btw - can't wait), I was worried what specs the new iMac will have, and glad they stayed relatively the same. So therefore, no buyers remorse my end. You can still work on a budget with buying the Mac Mini and have a basic setup that costs less then an iMac. May not be as good looking, but you still experience the M1 chip performance.

Sadly prices in Australia cost more on things due to the exchange rate. (btw: I went 16Gb for my Mac Mini, mainly future proofing as I'll be keeping it for a few years).

The problem with 27inch 4K is that the pixel density is not as good as Apples retina displays. Once you see a Retina display you can’t go back. 4.5k on a 24” iMac is going to be so clean.

@@nghbrhood6848 I know retina displays are good, and it'll be great on the 24" M1 iMac no doubt. Generally, it'll be an awesome all-in-one solution for most people. I personally am working on a budget, plus I'm going for the customisation look as well for my desk setup. Love the look of the M1 iMacs too, but went M1 Mac mini direction personally.

I own a late 2014 Mac Mini and I would like to update to the new iMac 24" but the port selection is just lame and the pricing in Greece starts at 1600€ for the cheapest one with the two Thunderbolt ports. Even the number of ports in M1 Mac Mini aren't sufficient for me. It should have at least 4 Thunderbolt ports, 4 USB-As an SDXC card slot and a line in. Also I would love it if Apple could release a Mac mini 499$ version like it used to.

But which one of the two is more powerful in terms of their components (hardware-wise)?

They have identical processors and their internals are very similar, so they’re probably about the same when it comes to performance

For my home family computer i owned a MacMini for 5 years was now giving the family a bit of a trouble when Mac mini M1 came out I traded it in so the new Mac mini M1 cost me $585. for base model , purchased an 32 " LG UN 880 ultrafine 4k for $ 600.00 , already owned a 2nd Apple keyboard and a mouse & logitech 10 P C920 camera glad I made that decision for family computer just got tired of waiting for Apple to bring out a 32 " Imac now if Apple does bring out a 32 " Imac with a 5k/6K display by the end of this year I may trade in my Mac Mini M1 which certainly is an amazing value ! LG 32 " 4k monitor can be used as a 2nd monitor

the Advantage to the mac mini with its extra accesories expenses is you can just plug in a new computer and you're all set with the i mac being an all in one to get rid of it you have to have a whole other computer + accessories just be ready to sell it

Thanks! I use this one: amzn.to/2RUXVdt - it works for both Mac and windows, but with windows, I think it takes a bit of manual configuring.

The flip side of the all-in-one iMac design, combined with its non-existent DYI parts replacement, is that when one part blows up, you have to replace everything. I had this experience with an earlier iMac model when the graphics card malfunctioned. Even the expensive screen, working perfectly, became completely useless....

As good as the new iMac looks, I'd also be torn because I have a Windows PC that I would hope to use on the same monitor as the Mac. It doesn't look like you can use the iMac as a monitor for a PC anymore (I don't think you could do this since 2015 or so).

You're right, any iMac after I think the 2013 models can't be used as an external monitor :(

Don’t forget about the color accuracy, True Tone (if that’s your thing, and not having to plug in or wait for some external display to turn on. Right now, because of most people’s bandwidth limitations, 1080p on par and sometimes, when considering streaming limitations, 720p is still the limit when things are live streamed. I think 4K web cams are extreme overkill, even at this time. Just because it’s 2021, it doesn’t mean that the quality will be on par with the quantity of pixels. I’m surprised that it’s taken this long to implement a 1080p camera. Maybe somewhere down the line, they might put in a 4K web cam 🤷‍♂️. Also, the 24” iMac is a brand new design whereas the Mac mini is still sporting an older chassis that will change come the next cycle given how history of Apple has had some consistency where the first gen models (CPU change) have the previous look just with different internals. I’m curious about what the 14” MacBook Pro might look like, perhaps it’s just like the 16” with slimmer bezels 🤷‍♂️. The sucky thing about the new iMac is that the base has the same specs and port limitations as the MacBook Air with only 2 thunderbolt ports and an M1 chip with 7 core GPU, not the 8 that even the Mac mini has. The upper tier models have the better value, but kinda wished there was an M1X chip in it or a tier with a larger core/gpu count with all the ports being thunderbolt with the 4 port models. Kinda curious about the rumored 27” replacement though 🤔. Maybe that will be announced at WWDC 🤷‍♂️

I agree I’m a longtime pc user and m1 opened my eyes and for general use $700 plus $150 for a 1tb thunderbolt drive and it’s a great value for general use. But I’ve always used displays wih thin bezels and no chin and the fact that apple hasn’t gotten rid of the chin after 22 years it quite annoying. Also I don’t think a 24” display needs 4.5k and I wear headphones. The Mac mini is just a better value in my eyes

i think i like the new iMac and could see myself one day getting a VESA mountable 32”, but 24” is just too small for a desktop class display, and long term I am not going to be satisfied with the stand, so for now I'll keep my mini with my old 32” 4K Asus monitor.

My 2011 maxed out 27 inch i7 max out ram took to the grave and apple or any other company will not work on it, so for $1100 16 gb, 512 and $600.00 for the Dell 2720 is great because when times come if you imac goes out you'll have to take the whole thing in and computer have a 8-9 yr service life but with the mini, you can get a new monitor or a cheaper mini when the time comes. Go for the mini and that is from a past imac owner.

Mac mini + keyboard + mouse + touch pad + 1080p camera + speakers + microphone + 4k monitor. If you are buying a new device for regular daily basis use, I dont see any point to buy mac mini over new iMac.

Of course, you can find peripherals that make the prices similar. However, there are plenty of options out there, and many of us already have a mouse or a good keyboard. I saved $500 over the same spec Imac with my Mac Mini purchase (16gb, 500gb Mini, 28 inch 4k monitor). I certainly don't regret not waiting on the 24inch imacs.

That iMac is one ugly all in one computer viewing it from the front. They focused so much on the thinness and back of this thing the front looks like an iMac mock-up from a third party company. Jesus the white bezel and chin with no apple logo looks like a child was trying custom make an iMac.. I’m no engineer but why not make the thing thick enough to have the internal hardware in back of the screen and make it edge to edge ?

To me all the new apple own chips products are great. Comes down to your taste of looks. For me mac mini is more than enough for a light user who just uses safari.

Thx for checking my music out! 8gb of ram I think is plenty for most daily tasks and even some photo editing and light video editing. But I do notice some slowness when editing 4K video and would definitely recommended 16gb for video editors!

I've never had an Apple computer. But maybe I'll consider a Mac mini. I just wanna wait till September in case more stuff gets revealed.

So i did some research on pricing, and It's interesting. The iMac with Touch ID + 512gb storage is $1699, but the Mac Mini 512gb with 4k LG color accurate monitor, apple keyboard + trackpad and 1080p webcam is literally $1699. Its actually crazy how theyre basically the same price either way if you choose apple peripherals.

Interesting point, the Mac mini’s additional usb-a ports, hdmi and potential 10 gigabit Ethernet … also the monitor you chose being 8 inches diagonally bigger makes the two at $1699 not equal. Also you can buy multiple 4K 28” or 24” monitors for that price instead of one 32” monitor.

You don’t really need an HDMI port on the iMac, plus you can get 10 gig Ethernet on the iMac as well. I’m just saying if you configure the Mini as close as possible to the iMac, there’s not much difference in pricing.

iMac for sure. I’m not dogging the 1080 considering that the laptops still come with 720 in 2021..

Same, I returned my Mac Mini after seeing the new design, it’s incredible. Some people just have problems with things that look different.

Not an easy choice. If only the iMac had a bigger screen - and USB-A ports! As things stand, I'm gonna need a dock.

Yah it def seems like they’re trying to milk the M1 as much as possible until gen 2 of the chip comes out. I mean M1 has only been out for a few months, so if I were them, I’d be doing the same exact thing lol

If you want 16g RAM and 512g storage get the mini. iMac at that level ends up $2000 and mini is about 1600 after buying the keyboard, mouse and monitor

Facts

I think if one has 10Gb needs on M1 devices, M1 Mac mini is the only choice by now; If can wait, I think we can expect a 32" iMac by the end of this year. I believe it will be equipped with a much more powerful M series chip and configurable with a 10Gb ethernet option.

It looks like that power brick that comes with iMac M1 is oversized and that could be catch all new iMacs

I have Mac Mini M1 with 34" inch monitor with nice web camera. But my monitor has lower resolution then iMac M1. I have organized my home office around it and I have no intention to buy iMac. My teenage son would like to get iMac M1. I am trying to make him to by Macbook Pro M1 and nice lager monitor sice he is more mobile and he is videographer a local drone club.

@@b3naqua Ay thanks! Pretty sure I’m going with the mini yeah! How’s the 16gb for you? I know it’s M1 but I’m still worried because I run big sample libraries and go from tracking all the way to mastering. Not always super heavy stuff but I need the room to breathe in case I need something with 90+ tracks. Would you recommend the 16 be fine or I continue to wait for a 32Gb m1 which I don’t think I’ve seen anyone talk about(other than M1x maybe around xmas)??

16gb works really well for me! The most intense apps I use are Final Cut Pro and Ableton Live and the M1 handles both like a champ. Ableton isn’t even optimized for M1 yet and it runs really well. FCP can slow down here and there but it’s pretty rare.

I loved new design and colors except for that white bezels... remove it and leave the actual color fill that. For new iMac I’ll wait for M1X, until that, Mac mini is better for now to me..

Agreed about the white bezels - I too wish the bezels were the same color as the rest of the iMac!

just the display on imac is worth 1000 quid. there are some more differences between 1299 and 1499 like ports, keyboard, lan also it needed two side firing speakers, nobody's buying that spatial claim, also thermals would be worse because the display needs to be driven. save with mac mini and spend on ipad pro 11

@@b3naqua sometimes colour is a distraction, i thing a plain white bezel and some subdued color on the back should have been included or at least should be in the works, ipad 12.9 would be a test bed for mini led so maybe all these improvements would be appear in the larger imacs once apple is done taking baby steps

Interestingly apple has a new campaign to have "everything apple" cable neutral and be greener than grass. This is where I feel that iMac is a bit problematic as with every upgrade you have to refresh all components including display and that looks bit waste-full for either material or energy (recycling power) This is where mini is more efficient as you keep screen, mouse, keyboard, mic, camera and just buy new mac mini. Just saying

Disappointed they kept the chin. Would have looked much better without.

I don't mind the chin tbh, but it does look kind of unnecessary. I'd imagine they left the chin there to separate it aesthetically from the XDR display, cuz without the chin those 2 devices look very similar.

I'm thinking the Mac mini for me since I have that awesome M7 Monitor from Samsung.

@@b3naqua the airtag idea is great though! Unless you’re running an iMac from 2011-2013 I think the new iMacs will be a great update. Not sure about the new iPad Pro’s. They’re still fundamentally an ipad :/.
