Regrettably, I found Mac after his death 😪

The biggest inspiration for me when I make music is the feeling I get listening to other people's music and wanting to recreate that feeling through my own prism. Music is the language of the soul and needs to be felt, not thought. Every time I write a song from my head thinking that others will like it, it sounds shit. Generally my best work comes when I have pent up feelings that need releasing or when I hear a song that stirs up emotions within me that I then try to mimic. Rarely does my mimicry sound anything like the song I'm trying to imitate and that's how I get my own style. Once an understanding is reached that we are all abstractions of one universal consciousness then it makes sense that any piece of music that resonates with you must also resonate with others as emotion is something we all share through heart intelligence and mineral mind. The best advice that was given to me in terms of creating art can be summarised in 3 points as follows: 1) Feel it don't think it. 2) Be the best at what you do or the only one at what you do. 3) Describe your world don't explain it. I hope this advice helps you on your creative journey.

13:39 As a songwriter, using Dan Harmon’s “Story Circle” helps me be more authentic with my music. In my opinion, telling cohesive stories about our own experiences, is one of the truest forms of expression. A strong beginning, middle, and end is usually what makes a story/song complete

Something small but probably since March I’ve tried to practice piano everyday Or Atleast every other. Can play a couple chords and random bits but it feels good to play! The hardest part of learning something is practicing through being shit at it! Spending 20minutes just to write down the chords so I can actually play them. All the boring bits add to the beauty of the learning… I write this to just say if you wanna start something just do it and I promise you you’ll receive immense joy when you do play that first song or whatever it may be! Starting is the hardest part and your future self will be grateful. All the best! And thanks for the video on Mac RIP to a great 🙏🏽

I'm a KZread man through and through so I just watches videos at like 0.5 speed and get the chords down LOL I also found that writing the chords down on paper is actually good to not only play the song but helps you understand the theory! That aside if you also produce or anything it helps with that majorly as you could then play all instruments via VSTs on your DAW many cool layers too it! I'm sure you're well versed but just to remind you! even 10mins a day you'll grow massively over the course of a year!

@@zerofiveworld7988 Yeah I agree, when I was progressing at a good pace, it was all about doing it every day. Luckily it was lockdown at the time, so I had a whole bunch of day to get stuck into. I enjoyed learning the major and minor scale patterns, then figuring the notes out across the different keys. It's kind of a tedious task, but very satisfying when you can then build chords from that. Putting chords down on paper sounds like a good shout. In terms of YT, I also watched a lot of videos, mostly from this guy I'll link here. He doesn't post anymore but found him a good resource - kzread.info/head/PL1302D94F247600CD . I'm looking to spend more time playing so if you have any channels you watch and would recommend, do send them over.

I think one of the best ways to produce authentic work is to avoid consuming too much of other ppls art before you make things. Let your natural inclinations guide your process.

Love this video! I found that the more I move away from the classic structure of how a song should be constructed, the more creative my music and lyrics become. I just go where the music takes me. I think recognizing when it feels like forced creativity is important too. Sometimes I’ll just take a break from a piece and start to play with something else and revisit when I feel inspired. I never force songwriting/production anymore. Playing with genres too and not letting a particular sound define you. I think as long as it speaks to you, the honesty will always pull though as being harmonious even if each track sounds different if that makes sense. Mac was always really great at those two things; breaking out of stereo types of what a rapper should be and playing with all types of genres in his own unique way.

Something I've started doing is before I attempt to record something, usually a video or something in logic, I take 5-10 minutes to centre myself, to meditate and try to release the tension and pressure. Also to make a clear intention that it's going to go well. It's a small thing that I've only just started doing but I it has made a big difference so far.

I’ve been in a creative rut for quite some time as I’ve been rebuilding myself from addiction and chronic pain…. I mean, after listening to this, it makes sense as to why I struggled with art… cause I felt a little like I lost myself. Art is about being vulnerable and authentic…. I was lost in chronic pain and my body as my identity for so long, that now, as the drugs are gone, I don’t have anything to hide behind anymore…. I think I’m ready to create again. I’m meant to bring something beautiful to this world…. That’s my purpose…

He proved he can reach platinum on his own, but that level of maturity to get others involved inspires me to let people in as well.

I think an important thing to note is that Mac had a lot of talented people around him who supported & helped make his vision come to life! With that being said, most bedroom/recording artist I’ve met, tend to work alone. It can help us all to collaborate, in person, with other creatives. You’ll be able to bounce idea’s off of one another and really hone in on what you want to make. What comes to mind are the musicians who helped Mac create You and The Internet during the Space Migration Tour! Cheers!

To be honest in art you must first be honest with yourself. Even if you're dishonest with yourself write that down. The first things. We often run our art through many filters and it comes out too distilled. The truth isvthe untouched gem that is there for access at anytime.

Damn. This lowkey made me emotional. I remember listening to Swimming for the first time. I really do, because I was new to the workforce working a shitty 9-5 job barely making money, coming home and smoking weed and making music. I remember the night I played Swimming. I didn't know an album was coming out, I just saw a ton of tracks uploaded on Mac's YT channel and clicked because why not. And I remember just hitting my weed pen while the first track came on... and I'm pretty sure the first track I clicked was 2009. Words can't describe it forreal. It was a magical experience hearing that. Idk how to describe it but it's a vivid memory of mine.... almost like I can remember looking at myself sitting at my computer enjoying the experience from top down. RIP Mac! Excellent video @creativeminds.

Remember as kids the amount of free time we would have to experiment with our creativity? I spent 5+ hours everyday drawing. Naturally, things are different and other things in life request my time; which I happy apply myself to. Getting back into the groove of inspiration, you have to work that muscle consistently. Start once a week if you’re out of it completely. I like to draw everyday, at least for 5 minutes. We have to keep the fire warm to keep our dreams alive

He saved my life and made me love music more

the best thing for me was learning that emotions are okay whether they are happy or sad emotions. every feeling is worth feeling and when your channeling those feelings they are easier to express when you can accept they are there in the first place. I see a lot of people force music and force a specific feeling. but why not write about what your feeling in the moment. sometimes I go into the studio thinking im going to do a hype performance song for when im on stage but when I start to record I realize I dont feel that way so I turn it around and work with how im feeling. embrace it.

In response to some of the questions in your video...i think its different for everyone but for me personally i find it easiest to make my most authentic music early in the mornings locked away at my desk all by myself. Its in that time that i feel most comfortable with who i am and im not worrying about other ppls thoughts or opinions and i can just be me.

I definitely agree with the approach of respecting the first authentic feeling i try to remind myself in process that I wasn’t inspired by whatever to make something prolific it was for that free moment of expression once I start to question “is that really good? will people like it” I stop immediately because I know once I start to dissect that’s when you lose the feeling when I feel like I’m creating for accolades, there’s more fun in creating to honor the inspiration or just that inkling of “what if it went like this”. Now I do have moments where I’m creating intentionally for consumption but I like to feel that people who indulge in whatever I create are looking for my essence and interpretation of experiences, just a glimpse into my mind/life/ heart so it urges me to create something that feels like me so that I create an intimate relationship with whoever is consuming so that they can find the feelings they’re looking for in my art without compromising my own

I hear you on this, thanks for sharing it too. When I'm trying to write songs, I sometimes catch myself in a mode of, where this might hit with someone if they were listening, and yeah that approach creates a very different outcome for my stuff. It's never that state of process that 'causes me to have moments where I feel like I'm tapping into something properly emotional, and more like I'm writing with my analytic brain instead of all the other important stuff. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and great to read.

I’ve had a hard time as an artist and creatively where I’m so stuck in my head , and then when the answer is just be your true self , truthfully I’m everything I’m sad a lot I’m chaotic I’m peaceful , and when I look back at my environment or what i consume (mentally) it pollutes my will to make music . The judging or this doesn’t sound good , I feel like I don’t fit into our culture and I’m pretty sure others feel this way to but this is the barricade stopping me from making music, haven’t been able to make a song in forever I can freestyle for ever but when it comes to making an actual song with a melody and hook I’ve just had a huge block . If you read this far thanks and if you have any suggestions please don’t be hesitant to recommend something music use to be all I know before I left home

When we worked with him in the studio, he always made the vibes better. I miss him and wish he didn't leave us all so soon

My ways of focusing on my creative works is never believing there is an end and stopping everything I'm doing no matter where I am and just focusing on my music career whether I'm at work and I need to stop my work to write lyrics or if I am communicating with my wife and have to stop being with her just to focus on my dream. It's tuff But I need to do it. I've dropped a lot of my family. Severed ties with friends and just gave up on so much to have success in my work. And I'm still not there will be one day.

you should look into kevin parker from tame impala, i think he's an interesting study, especially surrounding him making lonerism & currents, he's a very self-critical perfectionist who shuts himself away from the world and creates everything himself, he has some interviews surrounding his album 'lonerism' which i think could be useful for you.

as far as rapping & songwriting if you want to be more concerned with authentic expression of emotion & the moment over crafting this deep layered lyrical piece than my advice to you is to work on making the ladder. once you can do that well than you can abandon that slow methodical process & attack song creation more freely but all that practice even when you had no inspiration will mean you are still sharp enough to forget about being sharp. if ive been rapping for 10 years than no matter what I do even my less lyrical songs will still be lyrical, yk?

Mac was overrated but it's sad he died

U have to be extremely vulnerable and honest about who u are . . U must be self aware....u must be aware of what's going on in culture .....U have to have something to say first.......something that if u dont you'll go crazy..... usually unfortunately this happens when u go through some traumatic shit.....in that pain...be broken....just be the pain ......after ur ego dies ...a slow painful death .now u can truly create....If you are not willing to engage in intense gut renching self examination u won't be at the top of your craft.....drugs do help stop the outside noise....now focus intensely.....alone all alone and create using your developed skill and preferred aesthetic
