M83 - Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun

Музыка

Taken from Before The Dawn Heals Us, M83’s third studio album, and perhaps the one that catapulted their success in North America. Lauded by Spin as one of 2005’s Next Big Things, with glowing press from Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Vice, Pitchfork and a myriad of other publications, M83 saw their first major television commercial with “Don't Save Us From The Flames” featured in a Pontiac ad. 2005 also saw M83 perform at the prestigious Lollapalooza, Coachella, Austin City Limits, and headlining KEXP’s Benefit Concert in Seattle.

This song celebrates the beauty of things that end. Simple as that. It can be death, a relationship that didn't work in the end, a son leaving their parents house to make his own path... It celebrates the closure of things that, directly or not, starts another cycle, until itself comes to an end. And it is beatiful because, celebrating things that end means celebrating everything. Everything starts from a ending.

indeed, but it's also a reminder that life is death itself, a pain that might overcome us, or make stronger to accept the duality of the world and life itself, it's hard but we will make it through.

Thank you for your words. I lost my Mom last December and M83 music has been incredibly emotive to me. I am a kid of the 1980s, like Anthony, and there is such a deep presence of the sprite and joy of that decade. His play with vocals and long rich tapestry of sounds just calls me back there. I am trying to be positive and think of the new things that lay ahead for me in life, things that she will, no doubt help me do from her new home in heaven.

I would like to thank M83 for making this song that has flown under my radar until last night. I have been in a rough shape lately due to my depression but have not been able to let go and shead some tears, and then this song came up on auto-play and I was captivated by the song and it made me feel enough to cry. I really needed that, thank you again.

"Let me tell you a story. About a boy too old to be a kid and too young to be a man..." A Monster Calls is one of my favorite movies of all time. I started crying the instant I saw the trailer (the one featuring this song), before I had seen the movie. It touched me like nothing else had before. And I hope that it touches you, too.

You guys have no idea how better this song is if you listen through the whole Before The Dawn Heals Us (Aka, the best Sythpop album ever). It's so fucking amazing if you have the patience to listen the whole album, and while you're enjoying the energy.....boom! This song comes up and gives it the best ending to any album ever. I really recommend this, it made me cry a little.

Never in my entire life has a song so moved me as this one has. It has carried me through some of the roughest times in my life, losing my brother, feeling alone and lost. This song touches you deep in your very heart and soul and pulls you out of whatever darkness you may be sinking into. This song reminds me what it means to live and to love, to feel and to simply be. These words definitely don't do this song justice, for emotions such as those stirred by music such as this simply cannot be defined. What this song means...you just feel it, deep inside. Your soul smiles, your heart glows. You're one with life and love and everything around you. This song is the universe holding your hand and telling you that everything is going to be okay...because you are loved. Thanks M83. For giving life to this ethereal and exquisite piece of music, and for sharing it with the world.

The first time I heard this song was about a decade ago. I was watching the Top Gear Vietnam special and as the sun set on the beautiful country of Vietnam a small section of this song played. I never knew the song, but remember the feeling it gave me. Utterly content and blissful. I watched it again for the first time recently and I heard the song again and I felt exactly the same 10 years on. This time, due to the advancements we’ve made in 10 years, I could Shazam the song and find this full length masterpiece. It’s taken me 10 years to hear the full song, and it was worth every moment waiting.

The edge of oblivion smiled back at me, Familiar and mocking. Recognition rising from soul memory, I’ve been here before. “…depths so dark not even the dead can escape.” I test the waters with a gloved hand. Cold. Void of feeling. An emptiness so elegant in design one can only stare in wonder at the creator’s mastery of time and space. Another finger, a chill down my spine. The pressure builds and I know what comes next. Those eyes know what comes next too. A sense of dread washes over my broken body. I’ve always hated this part. My bones ache with a sacred pain as I immerse my whole body in a single motion. The coldness is mind numbing. The pressure unbearable to my fragile frame. The darkness begs to be broken. I fall without time or direction. An endless, tumbling waltz through utter blackness. Thoughts pass into formlessness. Worlds end and I know nothing more. …..

What does everyone else take from the video? Even since I started listening to M83 in 2008, I've thought of them VERY deeply as like, existentially awake. This video makes me think of how like, there are so many REAL people who these types of things happen to (car accidents, shootings, disasters, whatever). But somehow, how its just business as usual for the universe, and for this crazy experience called life, which is SO much bigger than us... which IS us... that we will all too have our time... but that the universe and life and the process making all this possible will continue on... for fucking eternity

This particular case got to me, and I think this popped up as a suggested youtube video after some time on the phone about the details and how to write it. This song is forever linked to that incident, and the video is most fitting. I want to cry everytime I hear it. My theory is that a couple got into a car crash. You can tell it's a car because you can see shattered glass, gasoline, and sideview mirrors. Also, I would guess that the couple is from the mid 20th century. Because, back then you could go flying out of a windshield and winshield glass could shatter. Nowadays we have better car safety. Also, they showed some old car crash test clips so that could also elude to the time being older than today. But, it could be modern day too because the "tik" sounds could represent texting sounds. Either way, it's a beautiful song with some beautiful cinematography. They definitely know what they're doing. The represented a couple's final moments into a beautiful end and new beginning.

I think the title indicates an acceptance of demise. The term "Lower" implies a gentle, calm closing of one's eyes, and the latter part of the title just gives away that someone is accepting death. The video first shows us a pulsating light, and it gets us questioning what it may be. Time is just ticking on, with the "tick" sound being repeated at the beginning. This just seems like the universe is moving on like normal. Little do we know, the light we once thought was benign and non-significant, it turned out to be headlights from a car that hits the viewer so abruptly, just as life does with us all. There is a visual and musical shift here, signifying the said major life event happening. The music gets much more chaotic, and goes from just the "tick" sound to a much more hectic cadence of sounds and instruments, showing how our lives become hectic and chaotic when a major life event hits us. It's amazing how they showed this through sounds, with absolutely no lyrics. The videos of test dummys were just to establish what exactly was happening, to explain the purpose of the man and woman soaring through the darkness. The man and woman obviously got in a car accident together, and the consistent shots of them are proof of that. As the video progresses, however, it shows them getting closer and closer, reaching out for one another, showing how they are falling (okay literally flying) together, because all they have ever wanted is each other. The final shot of them portrays them holding each other's faces, staring at one another. This is a visual and musical shift in the song, which then segues into the final portion of the song, which gets rid of the drums and just has the harmonious pitch in the background with a few other minor sounds. This leads into the denouement of the song, which is also representative of the resolution of life, as the chaos that erupted initially - fades. The lights at the end represent the man and the woman. They were separated as individuals, as there are two lights, both different colors. They join together after about a minute of them being apart, showing how they remained together even in the afterlife, and upon merging, they moved on with the rest of the (what seem to be) stars, because the universe moves on without people all the time. When a loss occurs, people are affected, chaos erupts, but everyone moves on, just as the final shot shows. The stars shown that pass them by can either be all of those who also met their demise in the universe, or it can be representative of the beginning of a life together. The two lights in the final scene, when merging, can also be the symbolic replacement of the man in the woman in the video. The video makes it kinda clear that they die, as the crash looks horrific for about six minutes. The lights binding together can be two individuals uniting, forming a couple. Once they merge, they may also be interpreted as joining the rest of the world, moving forward in life together, ready to find themselves in a similar situation that the couple in the video found themselves in - a fatal incident. Overall, I think the video focuses on the concept of life, which is that we will face struggles, we will fall, but we must regroup and join the universe once again. The video shows a death caused by an accident, but it can be holistically speaking to the aforementioned process of life. We die, we fall, but if we can, we rise, and we join society, who has long moved on from our downfall. Without a single word uttered in this song, I think it reinforces my theory of what this whole song and video means. No words can capture what it is like to lose, or be lost. Hence, a harmonious tune, a tragic scene, and a final beautiful shot of colorful lights does its best to encapsulate such an intricate, solemn topic. This song is so beautiful, and has gotten me through the worst of times. For those of you that stumble upon this in 2018 and years past that, let me know what you think if you read through this entirely. I have so much fun analyzing songs, and I hope someone else out there has a unique (or same) perception they would like to share.

When I hear this song I imagine taking a hike up a mountain with my mind running wild replaying every single problem or negative thoughts in my head. And once i finally reach the top of that mountain, the sun is setting and the town below is lit up. I take a deep breath, release it and a feeling of freedom and peace wash over me.

I wish I could personally stand in front of you and tell you how much I love you, and how much you have changed my life... I listen to you when I'm falling apart, when I'm high on psychedelics, when I want to end my life, when I'm painting, and when my life changes significantly. You are my foundation, my breath of fresh air, and the magic that dances between my toes. Thank you for existing, thank you for your undying love for magic that you create from your souls, and ultimately, thank you for gifting this miracle to this world... I cannot tell you how much it means to me that you make music. Thank you for following your dreams and passions. I would not be here otherwise if you hadn't. Thank you for changing my life. I sincerely wish one day I'll be able to express my gratitude to you... I love you all so much with every depth of my heart and soul.

Same to you dear fellow human... without music there would be no life for me, I would've given up on it a long ago... everyday tortures I've endured because of it... just to be able to keep my head high and face also the awesome things life has to give... Lot's of beauty in life is to be witnessed but sometimes also terrible heartbrake, that no-one can really understand unless they've experienced the same... but it all comes down to music in the end... it is an endless source of power for the right type of mind and once a person realises this, it will be the very best companion to the bitter end!

Good lord.....M83's music always makes me feel *_so_*...._grateful_ to be alive. This is truly _"spiritual"_ music, in the best sense of the word. There's something exalting about their music. It taps into that feeling you sometimes get....that achingly poignant feeling of being in awe at the crushing beauty of the world around you....with the realization that, one day, it will *_all_* come to an end. There's something infinitely sad..._and_ infinitely beautiful about knowing that. And this music captures that feeling better than anything. Their song "Wait" does the same thing for me. I love this.....

I'm listening to this on repeat as I am choking back tears because I'm about to leave my fiancee of ten years. We are supposed to be married in 3 months but I feel I have to walk away, she never told me what she's been doing the last six months, and said how I felt didn't matter because I couldn't pay into the wedding. I pay most of the bills and rent, do the yardwork and fix the cars. This is a long time coming of years of use and abuse.

M83 has been with me through so many things. I remember sifting through the CDs at Borders bookstore, I went there often with my mother, when I found a copy of M83's debut album. The cool thing about Borders was that you could listen to lengthy samples of the CD before you purchased it. As soon as I heard M83 I was in love. I was a teenager then. When I was 21 my mother passed away from cancer December 30, 2008. Shortly after in the beginning of 2009 my brother and I attended an amazing performance by Anthony along side the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Disney Opera House. This song here is one of my favorites of M83 as it embodies everything I think Anthony tries to convey: the beauty and fullness of life with all of it's heartaches and pains. I am so incredibly thankful for this artist. Also thanks to Nicolas Fromageau for those first 2 albums.
