M44 Swedish Army Mess Kit Review - The best mess kit in the world or a health hazard?

It's well over a year since I showed my mess kit for the first time on my channel so the time is ripe for the review. Can the old "filth can" live up to the hype? I will also adress the subject regarding hazards of using aluminium while cooking.

I had an Alu and a SS one and got rid of both. I have since on impulse bought a one with a repro pot set and having used it a couple of times it doesn't get out any more. A 25/27 would out perform this kit in every domain except perhaps being thrown out of a vehicle at speed. You are spot on about military surplus, my experience is that "good enough to do the job" is more likely the criteria not "the best we can make". Sometimes I think people confuse weight and solidity with quality. If you're a soldier you have to "suck it up princess" and carry the load you're given. As an outdoorsman I can choose my kit to meet my needs without ruining my knees. Looking forward to the next instalment!

To be honest I think the 25 could survive a car crash better than the m44, I mean you've seen my kit and and it's still working after the abuse it has been through in my youth. By the way, have the BA owned up to their end of the contract yet or are they still on your sh-tlist? See you around my friend!

@@RedswedeOutdoors You could be right, another thing I love about 25/27 is the mechanic/lego factor. You want to try a HA pot just plug one in, change the kettle, no problem. I was using mine only today to brew some decent coffee after work. We don't mention the B word, I have not posted any videos largely because all my kit apart from my phone is in a certain bag...Look forward to what you've got planned next.

A good, practical review. I have both the stainless steel and the aluminum versions and use both. One caveat though, the aluminum version is susceptible to corrosion from acidic and salty foods so I do not cook those in it. I like the kit for the nostalgia factor when my mood moves me. I also use it from time to time as part of my emergency car kit. It makes a great cup of coffee and soup /stew when I am travelling. Thank you, RedSwede!

Thank you Harry. From the information I've been given there are some versions of the M44 kit that have quite poor quality aluminum while others have the same (good) quality you could expect from the civilian Trangia kit. Thankfully mine doesn't seem to corrode in any meaningful way as far as I can see at least. Take care!

Coffee is also quite acidic, so it can corrode your aluminum as well. Some common soup ingredients are as well, so be careful. I do still use aluminum but mostly just to boil water. Plus, my pots are very well polished, and I maintain that from time to time, which helps tremendously to avoid leeching.

Yes, it's horrendous. I recently saw that Pathfinder made a replica in stainless steel without a burner in the neighbourhood of 100€. (Though the box says Swiss army kit.. LOL). I still stand by my opinion that it's only worth the money if you're a die hard collector, for that kind of money a civilian kit is better in every way. Take care Misa, Cheers!

I have an M40 (SS) that I picked up ages ago; don't even even know where the original burner is! It sat on the shelf all this time until I decided to pull it out and give it another look. I've got two Trangia burners that I use with other setups, so they'll match well with this M40. For minimalist/frugal car camping or maybe Vanlife it's ideal.

Hi Redswede, I agree with you, I've been using Swedish cookware for more than 20 years, I usually use it to make coffee or tea, i.e. I boil water with it. Every now and then I warm up a soup, that's about it, because when I'm out and about outdoors I enjoy nature and don't spend too much time cooking. And I think this cookware is just right for that. but that's just my very personal opinion. Stay safe and sound, Bernd

I have the privilege of owning 2 stainless steel M40's. The windshields, are dated from the 1960's. I stripped the green paint from the pots, leaving them a natural colour. Have 3 of the plastic kuksa cups as well. I only use the kit for cooking, but I use a Trangia triangle stove with a titanium MSR kettle for boiling water. Just in case I've also have an MSR skillet for frying if need be. In Australia, any naked flame during the fire ban season, makes me revert to my gas attachment for my Trangia triangle, which is allowed. The Swedish Army mess kit is fantastic.

Good review ! I have a stainless steel kit and an aluminum. Both work very well . The aluminum goes on my motorcycle because it's lighter in weight . They are compact and ,with the addition of a small frying pan ,[ just place it on top of the windshield ] will do everything you need for camping . If you susbstitute the burner for a Trangia burner ,you can add a simmer ring . In North America you can buy methyl hydrate [ methanol ] fuel which burns cleanly . No moving parts and silent burning makes this ideal for me . If you enjoy listening to a roaring burner , the smell of gasoline and need your water boiled at supersonic speed , you may not like this stove .

Yes, I've tried the "civilian" Trangia burner ín my mess kit and to my surprise it is working better in every way. It's faster and the spirit lasts longer even though it's smaller, and you have the simmer ring. The Pathfinder is actually pretty nice, every piece is stainless, windscreen as well. I’ve never seen an original, they never piqued my interest when they were $20…now they’re over $100 IF you can find one! But I got the Pathfinder for Christmas, took it out a couple weekends ago. It weighs 1/4 less than the original M40 so while the steel is thinner there’s less to carry. It seems robust enough. Yeah, made in China but to Dave Canterbury’s specs with a lifetime guarantee so I’ll take it. I’ve used it to heat water, heat boil-in-bag meals, flipped it on the side with a grill inside and used it as an oven…it’s a nice shape and size, the original design overall is quite nice! The rounded oval shape packs nicely, I like it. I’d love an original but wow…

@@RedswedeOutdoors That is NOT with the burner…what I was able to find is that the original M40 weighed 2 pounds, but I don’t know if that meant the burner was included…I’ll weigh mine with the burner that I got with it. The military Trangia is bigger than the civilian one, holds more fuel, weighs more of course. The Pathfinder seems to be the same diameter as the civilian but maybe is a bit taller, seems to hold more. Oh hell, now I have to get the civilian Trangia, the military Trangia, and the Pathfinder and weigh and compare them! I’ll report back but don’t hold me to a date and time 😁.

My Trangia 25 large pot is 1.75 l, small pot 1.5 l and wheighs in at 1.3 kg (with the coffee kettle, fuel not included) The newer versions are probably lighter, mine is 40+ years old after all... Hi, just an opinion for aluminum version of kit it depends on : aluminum surface finish (more polished - less leak) ,time of cooking, type of recipes (avoid acidic like citric , tomato,vinegar...) .All of those can leak aluminum into prepared food. However i think its something that you can do: Is to put water into it and leave it to form aluminum hidroxide which it will be your seasoning/insulation layer for low acidic prepared food. this will leak less aluminum into food.. but again you have to be carefull to do not scrape this layer of.Even stainless steel leaks chrome stuff into food and discoloration or coloration can appear.Cheers!

Most people take those aluminium mess kits europe style just give them a wash and after that just cook in them and eat. That is very wrong! You still have to boil water in them for at least 10 min first time ,i mean boil water in all mess kit components to form the dark aluminum hidroxide. And after boiling leave the water in the mess kit to cool down and form the oxide layer. That will stop aluminum to react wiith most food.To see if still leaks aluminum after this treatment just try to do this: Fine chop onion and cook with a drop or two of oil in mess kit.Taste the onion after a while. If taste metallic treatment was not good enough (repeat boiling water), also avoid cooking with tomatoes or citrics until this hidroxide layer gets really visible; potatoes boiling in aluminum with no initial treatment again have a strange reaction. My aluminum version of this kit got really dark and the food does not smell metallic anymore.Cheers!

Thank you for the sub first of all. As for the alledged toxiticity of aluminum it's very uncertain. For the consumers that use kitchen wares and such in aluminum I wouldn't worry. There's not any data that support the notion that it's causing any health related problems what so ever. Both my M44 and my Trangia 25 are made in aluminum and I too have an old cake pan from my Grandma that I'm using on a regular basis, and will continue to do so until the day someone can prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that it's bad for me. Hi Sam. Most of the time I just put it in the pack as it is, but sometimes I put it in a generic drybag if I think it's messy. I've thought about making some kind of pouch but haven't got around to it yet. Cheers!

I see that pathfinder is selling a stainless steel clone of these now and less expensive than a 2nd hand original. There are a few other army's (Hungarian) that made variants (copies) of these if people want a cheaper option. I haven't seen one in the wild so can't say how good they are...

I totally agree with all the thing you said about it. It's definitely not the best stove you can get. It is overpriced today and that is probably due to the limited edition. There are replicas out on the market both the aluminum and the stainless version. I don’t think the replicas will lower the price on the original stoves, the originals will always be original. "Snuskburken" I think that almost everyone that served in the Swedish military during the "snuskburken era" have a type of hate/love relationship to snuskburken.

I think you're right. I never served in the army but I'm kinda smitten by the hype to some degree anyway. On the other hand I think it's good to state just what you're saying, that it's not the best that you can get so if someone is looking for a starter kit, keep walking, nothing to see here. It's more of a collectors item theese days just like the the polish Lavvu. See you, Joones. Looking forward to your next adventure.

@@RedswedeOutdoors The “jägarkök MT” is better as a starter kit for right price. I got 4 of them for 250kr last year that’s a good price, but when they costs almost the same as the Trangia, the Trangia is so much better as they are a modular system that you can configure after your own taste. The best stove for a beginner is a Trangia 25/27 with gas burner in my opinion 👍

I just bought some new old stock stainless 40's that was made around 75 as the windscreen is dated and has the 3 crowns. The two stainless pots are unmarked as far as I can tell, but look and feel just like the ones from WWII.

@@buckshot4428It sounds normal. The M40 is from the WW2 era but the windshield and burner was added in the sixties (or was it fifties) the mess kit is designed for use over open fire. The pots had different stock numbers than the burner and windshield M7479-102000 for the pots and M2824-001129 for the burner and windshield. I have three M40, non of them marked with three crown, mad by Gense. There was also a company named ESKA that produced the M40 and from what I’ve heard it might have been at least two more steel press companies that produced the M40. The stoves was used both of the army and the civil defence. 👍 The aftermarket production of stainless started i 2021 or 2022 so your kit is legit even if it’s not marked with the three crowns

Regarding the health risks... almost all metals will be harmful. Aluminium is a tad riskier but the main issue is that it's a soft metal so if you scrape the bottom of the pan with a metal object you may as a result consume aluminium. If, on the other hand, it is anodised (which makes it much harder) and you're using a wooden spoon or a plastic one then you'll be ok. The key difference here is softness. You're just unlikely to scrape off stainless steel to a point you will actually consume it. Especially not if it's good quality SS. Personally, I don't understand the attraction to these systems. It's a rather big and heavy kit and it's not even that flexible. I understand the attraction to the history. it's certainly romantic to use if but there are better options out there. Even the original trangia set in anodised is becoming insane. I saw it for 150 pounds a few days ago on Amazon. The world lost its mind.

Well, the jury is still out concerning the health hazards. It's true that it's easier to consume Aluminium from cookware than other metals but the actual uptake in your body is low since the body has no need for Al unlike other metals. Most of it will promtly exit your body with the other waste products. As for the prices they're totally bonkers today. Cheers!

It might sound prejudiced but I wanted to hear what a swede thought about these kits. If the swedes have any particular fondness for them after 80 years, or if even to swedes they were just plentiful and cheap tools, "nothing special". I think it's more of the latter from your review. I personally am not satisfied by the amount of food I can easily cook up in a mess kit, even for solo cooking I would like to make double or more the portions a mess kit offers. Nevertheless I bought an Austrian mess kit and a swedish stove kit just to keep handy

  • @RedswedeOutdoors

    @RedswedeOutdoors

I would say that the swedes opinions on the matter are divided. Mostly it's more about if you're into militaria or not rather than the qualities of the kit. It's quite limited in its uses as you say yourself, but if the price had been 20 bucks I would say it could have been a decent starting kit. For 150 - 200 bucks it's for collectors that buy in to the hype. Since I already have it I'll use it when it suits my needs, and not unimportant for me, it does "pull in the crowds" to the channel. Cheers!
