    Now the minimum comfortable amount of RAM is 24 GB, the recommended 32. These 12 GB on a premium laptop are ridiculous. Memory costs nothing. And they don't even allow you to upgrade this memory. They don't allow you to upgrade your drives. I'm interested in ARM for Linux, so I'll prefer the upcoming X Elite on ARMv9 or Nvidia (if they release it). The option from Nvidia will be ideal for working on Windows. Let them sit with their 12 GB and 256 ROM in 2024. It's surreal. And as far as I understand, “Air” will still be without active cooling and this is pathetic.

    Even the SSD is more expensive like the HDD, and the upgrade of the SSD also cost more like to upgrade the HDD.. because you can't understand their 120GB/s in the basic M4 chip is equal with a quad channel DDR5 and a PCIe 6.0 x16 slot for the GPU.. moreover the 400GB/s in M3 Max is even bigger difference like the 30-40GB/s RAM in Windows laptops or like the 32GB/s limited PCIe 4.0 x16 slot where you plug the GPU and it's communivating on that speed with the system.. (30-40GB/s vs 120GB/s is about equal like the regular HDD with 150MB/s vs the early SATA SSD with 550MB/s transfer speed limit, it's "only" 3-4x faster, but it's more expensive..)

    They need to offer a new midrange DESKTOP machine ASAP! I don’t care if it’s M3 (unlikely to happen) or M4. There is no way I am spending premium money on a M2 Mac Studio right now! We had plans to purchase an M3 Mac Studio as soon as it was available as far back as 8 months ago. This was meant to be the powerful desktop machine that would be used by my son during his high school years. It needs to be a desktop, and it was supposed to have the power to inspire him. Also, he of course wants to play games and I need something with the power to satisfy that desire in the face of many of his friends getting ridiculous RGB festooned gaming PCs. You're free to ignore this suggestion, but I think a good gaming PC and a Mac mini will be a better combination for your son. Let me explain. Macs have great performance, but they are still atrocious for gaming, and it's not necessarily due to hardware limitations. A lot of the time it's software limitations so you won't be able to play popular games without time consuming and/or expensive workarounds. Therefore for playing games, a PC is the best considering even a lower priced PC can get better performance than an M4 Max machine in a lot of games, and that's if the game is even playable at all on the Mac. For productivity, schoolwork, etc, a base Mac mini should be enough, maybe upgrade the ram to 16gb if needed, because anything too resource intensive can be done on the PC anyway. I also share your hatred for tacky RGB, and there are many ways to create a classier gaming setup, as the one I plan to build is black and white to match my room's white interior. However, keep in mind that white PC components may be more expensive :)

I am a video and graphics creative, I use Photoshop and Lightroom, final cut, occasionally after effects, garage band. How do these processors affect me?

  • @fmax3000

    @fmax3000

    MacOS Will utilize the efficiency cores first when you have lighter CPU tasks like web browsing, Office, file management, etc. Efficiency cores are a bit slower and consume less power, so less heat, better battery. When more demanding tasks are sent, the OS Will involve the performance cores that are faster but on the expense of heat and power consumption. On very demanding CPU tasks, the OS will ramp up all cores, performance + efficiency to squeeze the maximum power possible. This CPU architecture design is called (big-little) cores. That's why Apple Silicon is so efficient but also so powerful at the same time. You can use activity monitor or install some tools to Watch which cores are being utilized with each task you throw at. The more P cores you have, the more powerful device at CPU tasks. The more E cores you have, the better battery life you get. Graphics SW usually use GPU more than CPU with custom renderers, shaders, encoders, decoders, etc. But Adobe kept utilizing CPU rather than the GPU in photoshop. So, for Photoshop you need CPU power, better P Cores. For lightroom, You need GPU mostly. For After Effects you need GPU more. For all 3 you need RAM, the more RAM you have, the faster the render, processing and exporting. At least 16GB, better 24GB+ After Effects, 3d programs suck RAM, 64GB is the optimal, but of course they can run on lower RAM. Most programs depend on signle Core performance, thats why Apple Silicon is faster than most of the rest (Intel, AMD and Qualcomm) chips out there, even when they have more cores, because it has much higher signle core speed among other factors like huge CPU cache. Final Cut Pro utilizes multi cores. It's up to the developers to implement how many cores are being utilized. Encoding/ Decoding standard video files like H.264 and H.265 is done by the custom hardware encoders/ decoders on Apple Silicon rather than the GPU, that's why exporting/ converting video is much faster on Apple Silicon than on new ARM PCs. It's faster and leaves the GPU vacant to take other graphics tasks. Same with AI, The Neural Engine cores handle all AI tasks freeing the GPU for other tasks. Hope this is not overwhelming and clarified things.

  • @brightboxstudio

    @brightboxstudio

    Efficiency cores can’t be as fast as performance cores, but if the efficiency cores can handle the performance needs of the current task, they will do it using much less energy. As MaxTech showed in an earlier video, from M1 to M2 the efficiency cores got much faster without using much more energy so it was a big win for battery life on common tasks, because most tasks don’t need maximum CPU power. macOS also sends background tasks to the efficiency cores because they are lower priority tasks, letting the performance cores concentrate all of their cycles on the processes that need maximum CPU speed.

    @@chipcurry Glad it helped. One last thing, for your kind of work, you can get away with the Pro chip with at last 16GB RAM if you were on a budget or waiting for M4 or M5. But maybe in couple years or so, you’d need more RAM or a better CPU and GPU. For a better performance and longevity, your work needs to be the Max chip with at least 24GB RAM. For the optimal performance, you need 32GB or better 64GB+. And if you don’t mind a desktop, then the base studio with 64GB is the way to go. It’ll last you many years and get your work done more efficiently and faster, with the ability of multi tasking these heavy programs. Chip generation. All Apple Silicon is great. First gen was the best in terms of low power consumption and heat, silence. I don’t advise going to second gen unless you get a great deal. For future proofing and getting the best and most durable, wait for the M4. M3 is much better than M2 as it brought HW RayTracing, custom shaders, etc to the GPU enhancing 3D and render speed for programs that are rewritten to make use of. M4 is topping in that and adding more to the Neural engine with the rush to AI and Apple Intelligence. It’ll show the benefit with new releases of the SW leaning more on AI filters and tasks. Photoshop generative AI and Neural filters, Topaz suite of apps, video editing SW utilising the neural engine, etc M4 is also said to have newly designed GPU from the ground up that is better than the architecture used in M1, M2 and M3. M4 is also built on the new enhanced 3 nanometer process bringing more transistor count, I.e. better performance with less power and heat. It’s the first in the industry. The difference is yet to be seen as we only have it in the new iPad Pros, so we have to wait for the Macs with M4 to be released by the end of this year. I personally have the M1 Pro MacBook Pro, unbinned with 16GB and 1TB since it was as released in Nov 2021. I used it as a desktop in clamshell mode with 2 * 2K 27” monitors. It’s like the machine I dreamt of all my life. Dead silent and cool. It chews everything I throw at, so snappy till now that I don’t need to replace it even after 3-4 years. I’m a computer engineer and a programmer, very deep into tech., and I do work with graphics, audio, video and little bit 3D as part of game dev. I used the Max chip and it’s only noticeably better than the pro in more demanding GPU tasks like heavy After Effect or high number of tracks in video editing with effects and filters. In Photoshop it’s almost the same. Lightroom and after effects suck RAM. 64 makes a big difference compared to 16. I mostly need to upgrade because the pro has only 1 set of video encoders while the max has double that for better concurrent encoding/ decoding tasks. Better in handbrake conversions. For Topaz video AI enhancements, you need more cores, better GPU and most importantly more powerful Neural engine. Hence, I’m mostly planning to upgrade for the Neural engine, in addition to more RAM and more CPU and GPU cores. That’s why I’m waiting for the Studio. And it’s unwise to invest in the M2 Studio ultra at this high price (ultra has double neural engine cores. The max has the same as the pro). With the M4 I’ll get the GPU enhancements came with the M3, which is the HW RayTracing, shaders. Etc. and probably fully redesigned GPU architecture. And the enhanced 3nm process and faster Neural engine. And with the studio I’ll get double neural engine cores, big amount of GPU cores and double the CPU cores compared to the Max and Pro. It’s not cheap at all and it’s not mobile, but working from home makes it suit my needs. And I still have my M1 Pro MacBook Pro for mobility. Sorry again for the long reply, but I liked to share my experience and findings. Wish you get the best deal on the best machine that takes your work to the next level and last you for many years. Fingers crossed. Cheers.

    I'm sure the tons of PC makers already have chips built near market ready to compete with M4. Apple is generally a company that copies other designs or buys them and tries to take credit for it themselves. It's always quickly a flip flop between PC's & Mac's. Choose the platform you prefer, not which one currently has the faster chips today. It wont' last long, and it's a lot of trouble to switch as you have a big investment in software & your time in learning it. If your switch from a PC to an M4 for better performance, before you blink, PC's will offer faster chips. And the same if your going the opposite direction from a Mac to a PC. For 99% of us, we don't need the absolute fastest performance for our current needs! Buy for what you need.....now.
