not being able to run macOS apps is the MAIN feature! look at windows touchtops software, it has some gimmicky "touch ready" features if at all, making it completely userless. android is completely dead in terms of tablets and software. iPad is the ONLY device and OS in the world which has from the ground up made professional software made specifically for touch. this is why the iPad is the best computing device in the world if your use case is covered and actually pro software costs way more than the iPad itself. anyway why isn't it obvious that an iPad costs more than a laptop? giving the iPad macOS compatibility would be single most dumbest Thing apple could ever do, and they never will do that, they said it clearly and are perfectly aware of why. but i reepeat it again, NO. it's just like steve jobs always said, customers have no idea what they want, they see shiny things and completely miss the downsides that come with it. the way it is it forces developers to go touch first and thats really the killer feature. iPadOS is replacing macOS, thats whats actually happening.

But no... They scam everyone and bundle all that up in the "pro" version, to a cost point, where you will just decide to pay a "little extra" to step up to the Mx Pro chip... Apple is a crappy company that happens to make good products. They crappy thing they do, is create price points on their products & upgrades that make you say, "Screw it! I'll just upgrade to the next model, since upgrading the memory and/or ssd puts me close to the cost of the next step up."

Without the ability to compile code on an iPad makes it a limited system. iPad is a content display device because of this limitation. However Apple also leaves out new features in previous models so if the next chip M5 comes with say MacOS they'd probably not provide that to M4 users. As such until the OS has a massive upgrade, you're better off going cheap and saving that money for when/if Apple do upgrade but only for the new iPads. That's the reasoning also: It gets the job done and avoids that risk spending more. Sure if budget is no problem then splash out on a device that will probably last a long time.

MacBooks are apparently not selling very well anymore so they probably think if the gave the iPad pros Mac OS lite nobody would buy their laptops. I prefer the MacBooks because of how limited the iPads still are. To me, the sweet spot for iPad pros would be if they had iPad OS but could run MacBook level apps.

Thanks for the video. I tried to use the outgoing iPad Pro model as a laptop. I bought the $300 Magic Keyboard and installed the iPad versions of Microsoft Office and other apps I use on my MacBook that are available for the iPad, or iPad apps that substitute for macOS apps I use. I had a miserable experience, due to limitations of iPadOS and because the iPad versions of desktop software I use aren't that great - they have only a subset of the features of their macOS counterparts and they aren't designed as well. As a result, I rarely use this device any more. The iPad use cases that work best for me are better on my iPad Mini 6 than on my iPad Pro. They include: taking notes with the Apple Pencil at meetings, and using while traveling - e.g. looking up information about sights, tours, restaurants, museums, etc. You can do all this on a phone, but an iPad Mini's bigger screen is helpful and the Mini is ridiculously easy to travel with. The iPad Pro is absolutely fantastic for people with certain use cases, and this new version with an OLED display is stunning. But as a laptop replacement for the average laptop user, the iPad Pro is a very expensive step backward.

Nice video! I was questioning the M4 iPad Pro verses the M3 Air, so this video was perfect timing. The dual sided camera on the M4 iPad Pro is nice, but someone could take the picture on their iPhone and air drop it to their M3 Air photo folder. The pen for designers, artists, cartoonists, and architects using (AutoCAD) is a huge plus for those fields. The obvious CPU advantage is for the iPad Pro when doing simple things. Running actual pro web apps is better on the M3. iPad OS is basically iOS on a bigger screen. In summary, only get the iPad Pro if you are in those niche fields. The older iPad or iPad Air are fine for kids and grandparents to binge watch their shows on planes or road trips. The M3 if you need those pro web apps, more RAM, better battery life, and a steady keyboard.

Really depends on what you _need_ a "laptop" to do or be. Cause before m1 with mba's, you knew you werent trying to do anything demanding. But you were ok with that and they worked fine to do "basic" computing tasks and media consumption. So that, but with ipads. If your uses arent that deep (ignoring money) an ipad would be fine and _might_ be the better laptop. Portability, convenience, app support, cellular, camera. Theres benefits to an ipad even if youre not an ipad workflow content creator/editor or artist/student. But if money is an issue or you can only have one device outside of your phone to handle any situation, a mac is the clear choice. It will handle every task because of how "open" mac os is. The limits of a desktop experience vs the ipad experience isnt comparable. And macbooks as a complete package is often times cheaper than buying an ipad and all its accessories to be a "complete" laptop.

User of Microsoft Windows OS aren’t very welcoming to the idea of not being able to run the old x86 software on Windows. Likewise iPad users aren’t necessarily receptive to a powerful iPad that can’t run MacOS software. Microsoft had a legitimate excuse due to the architecture differences. Apple on the other hand is literally using the same chips in both product lines ie no excuse.

We’re paying a “premium” to have a “laptop” with a touchscreen and all the benefits that come with that (drawing, handwriting, touch…) If you don’t want those benefits of touch, then you can buy a standard non-touch laptop for a cheaper price. The MacOs v iPadOS debate is rather circular so it doesn’t really come into the pricing. It’s the additional functionality of the hardware that leads in the price difference.

I think the one thing that everyone is forgetting is that these operating systems require vastly different user interactions. Having Mac run apps on an iPad will cripple the experience (and if there is one thing that Apple *prizes more than privacy is user experience). Everyone that thinks that there should be a dual boot MacOS/iPadOS are not taking into account the fact that as soon as they boot into the MacOS side, they’re gonna be pissed when they touch the screen and nothing happens. MacOS interactions are based mouse clicks, so that means developers are going have to create two versions of the apps to run universally *anyways* : one for multitouch interface, and one for mouse click interface. That’s a lot of work! Y’all are thinking that this is an easy thing to achieve.

And that’s not going to happen anytime soon. And again, that’s not easy to do. I worked for a startup that was only about 50 people, and when we had to make a decision, we had to think about all of the use cases. And when it came to our core app functionality, we needed to focus on edge cases too. It took months. Now if I extrapolate, the amount of people at  (designers, engineers, PMs, QA, managers, let alone the e-suite) that would be involved in something like redesigning the inputs and app interactions for a dual-boot OS, or, guidelines for universal app UI - would take years to get approved.
