I have the first gen iPad Pro 11 from 2018 and I love it. That said, it’s time to upgrade. Already ordered 13” pro with pencil

I’m still rocking an iPad Pro 3rd Gen since 2018. I was waiting for the OLED screen, too bad you didn’t talk about the 2 screen types. That’s what I want to know.

I still have a first gen iPad Pro 9.7”. I keep trying to justify a new iPad purchase but when it comes to clicking the “buy” button I just can’t bring myself to do it. I use it very rarely and for the things I do use it for, it still gets the job done. It’s a little slow to start up and execute various tasks but I have an Apple Pencil and a keyboard which work great when I need the versatility.

The only problem with the iPads is iPadOS is severely limiting. I have an M2 iPad Pro, and I know the hardware is capable of so much more. Well they've added some new software features you get in nature of the hardware and the M4, I can guarantee it's still being held back. I really hope Apple will do something worth while with iPadOS this year.

I'm a heavy iPad user and I've never understood this sentiment... the iPad is supposed to be a giant iPod touch that can occasionally do heavy duty stuff on the go... I guess I'm biased because I have a MacBook Pro

@@balderoine you’re absolutely right in the fact that the iPad can be what you’re using it for, but that’s before they put the word “Pro” on it. I think for a lot of people, and anyone using a basic iPad or iPad Air, that’s very much how it should be approached, as a larger scale iPod touch or iPhone. However, when selling a pro model with an M series chip, the iPad is severely limited. The problem isn’t that it’s not capable of more, it’s that it’s very much capable of more, Apple sells it as being capable of more, but it ultimately falls short. It’s purely software at this point.

YES! i want it. Coming from a 2021 iPad Pro. Super excited about OLED, and thinner, lighter. And that new Magic Keyboard fixes all of my complaints with the current one.

Definitely. The thinness and weight makes the M4 more travel friendly. Will have to wait to assess performace and thermal improvements of the M4.

I have both a 2018 and 2021 12.9" iPad Pro on my desk on either side of my S1 controller, mostly for running Avid Control, Spanner remote or Touch OSC. Occasionally, I use the 2021 iPad for media consumption on the couch or in bed. I'd definitely prefer that the camera is in landscape orientation as that's how I use my iPads 99.99% of the time, but since I don't hammer my iPads with a high performance workload, I have no compelling need to upgrade.... yet. I AM impressed with the new OLED displays though, that looks amazing!

I have the 2018 Pro and I feel that it now is time to upgrade. Enought hardware bumps but also I have a gut feeling that WWDC will bring more versatility to iPad, OS wise.

How do the speakers in the Pro models sound?

My household still uses an iPad Air 2, iPad 6, and iPad Pro 2 10.5-inch on a daily basis. Yeah, this line up is compelling.

I have a 2nd gen iPad pro. The OLED display is finally what is getting me to upgrade.

Looks good, but between the Vision Pro, iPhone and Macbook, the iPad doesn't really have a spot in my lineup anymore. In the very rare case when I want an iPad, like media consumption while travling, my OG 11 inch pro still gets the job done fine.

Vision Pro is still to niche IMO. No killer apps and its awkward. To each his own though.

is the new magic keyboard 11 inch trackpad big enough? how much smaller is it than 13 inch one?

i needed an ipad, traded in my 2020 12.9 pro a while back. a little disappointed but may still get the 11 inch. 12.9 was too big. The speakers were great on the 2020 12.9 but i was hoping for improvements on it and ....... actually im alright with it, just not the price tag. But i will get it.

This is by every measure my dream iPad. Ever since I got my first oled iPhone I’ve been waiting for them to put oled into the iPads and that day has finally arrived.

It's beautiful and I'd love to have one. It's hard to see what I will be able to do with this that I can't do on my Pro 12.9 M1 iPad and this is the issue. If it could boot OSX so I could use more actually pro and work necessary apps and occasionally leave my 16" M2 MBP home and save the weight, I'd buy it today.

Is the new Final Cut app only for the new Pro’s?

Have a non M Chip Ipad pro, 12.9 when it first came out, wanting a new one for awhile, but keep holding out for the “next Gen” This Gen has made me pull the trigger. I Seem to always wait until some physical re-design, to upgrade. That’s usually the cycle I’m on anymore with all things MacBook, IPad, IPhone (now) and Desktops.

Since introduction of pro max Iphone and recent increased battery drain - my iPad pro 10.5 has been sitting in shelf for last 3-6 months unused. So - how many artists do you think are there who will buy, would buy, can buy or even needs another device between macbook and iphone for the same price of any macbook + Wacom pen?

A couple of months ago I got a great deal on a base iPad Air 5. Combined it with a Brydge-branded Keyboard all new, all in for $602 ( I'm pretty sure the price will drop again before stock runs out). While I find myself drooling over the 13" M4 Pro, even the horsepower from the Air's M1 chip gives me plenty of performance overhead....and the price was right. That new Pro, tho...chef's kiss !

I am still more than a little timid about burn in with the new display technology. Otherwise, I suppose I would want the M4 processor with the bumped up neural engine, but I have an M2 so I don’t think I will be updating for a while.

Really wish the mini got some love.

If it OLED why doesn't it have always on display? Saving it for next year I suppose.

Nice, but like many others, I’m just not in the market for another iPad. My old one works fine.

I will update my 2018 (still going very well) iPad pro. It was heavy to carry out with the keyboard, i will change it all but still thinking about 11 vs 15. The price is too high but I assume new ipAd iOS will be better.

The price bump has made me change my plan to buy a new iPad , as well as the compatability mess with the old pencil and keyboards. I was primed to upgrade my 2018 iPad Pro. But now I’ve seen this , I’ve decided to stick with the 2018

Most people should also take a look at the Samsung Galaxy tab 9 Ultra + 14.6 inch tablet when researching/comparing & shopping around. I comes with a pencil, and the writing on paper experience is nice! And I believe it also has an OLED display. Worth looking at when shopping for a new tablet. I ended up with an Apple iPad because I am used to Apple products.

I was really excited about the new pro version after all the leaks, however i held off instantly buying it because i wanna wait for WW to see exactly what they will do software wise with it…. German had long said the launch was delayed because of issues with the new software for it…. I wanna say id love to see the pro’s being capable of having Mac OS on them and the Airs to have standard iPad os to differentiate them more so for the price…. Alas I’ve woken from my dream and will prob still buy it after they don’t announce major software changes, as i really do love to have the latest gear.. the iPad Pro is the ideal companion to travel over the MacBooks because it’s really the jack of all trades overall, so its a no brainer

I have the previous 12.9 iPad Pro. I won’t be upgrading to the new one. Instead, I’ll trade in my iPad Pro and switch to Macbook Pro, which is only a few hundred dollars more than the iPad configuration I would have gotten the new 13” in. For my usecase, might as well go all in and get the benefit of full laptop. YMMV. Maybe later, I might get a iPad mini for consuming media.

Oh, the new camera design on the pro... it's definitely a design....

Exciting update, just one small disappointment with Magic Keyboard, I want it to carry the pencil safely, maybe a spot specifically for pen and also detachable case like Logitech which I can de attach and use with pencil freely without being afraid to fell.

the new ipad pro is soooooo much more device than I would ever need. The 12.9 Air has got my attention; I want the larger screen for music reading apps (notation easier to read than on 11"). thing is, by the time I bought the new air, and usb c pencil, a case and applecare it's still around a thousand dollars. I"m wondering if a used or refurbished 5th or 6th generation iPad Pro would be more affordable?

My 12.9 M1 Pro is still running like new. I want the new OLED screen but performance wise my 5th gen iPad pro is still running well. I recommend it!

how much lighter do you feel the new 13" iPad Pro with the new KB as compared to the last generation? I still feel the biggest issues with iPad overall is the IOS.. To me all an iPad is is a giant iPhone. We need MacOS on the iPad

Logic Pro 2? Not enough said by Apple in my opinion. Is it a free upgrade from Logic? Can Logic Pro 2 work on older devices? The stem separation can work on my old iMac so it can’t be for the M4 chip only?

Really appreciate the review! The price of the pro model is quite high. A MacBook Air would be a more cost-effective purchase than an iPad. There aren't enough features on the iPad right now. Besides that, the iPad is a fantastic device for editing photos and videos on the go. As long as there isn't a major update to iPadOS, existing iPad Pro owners won't need to upgrade.

@@INFOXlive There is no data either way. But from personal experience, most people I know, including family, have an iPad and Mac. They do not have the pro model; they have the base iPad, and most of them are > six years old.

I am assuming here but the base is now from aluminum it seems, and the iPad is lighter. So the weight balance has shifted. Allowing them to have the hinge more open while still balancing the iPad without it topping over. The bigger hinge radius allows them to add a function row on the keyboard that was previously blocked.

Yes. I’m moving from IPad Pro 12.9 3rd gen to this one. It lasted for me 4 years+. Next one should be the same. But I would not change IPad every 1-2 years. No point in terms of performance and compatibility.

I edit ALL my videos for my KZread channel on Lumafusion on the iPad M1 and REALLY interested in the power as I get to videos over 20mins long edits it really starts slowing down. Can't WAIT.. but my wallet can! hahaha

Just a counterpoint to all the complaints about prices. The base 256GB 11 inch Pro is actually less than the 256GB 11 inch Pro 2018 model.

It’s incredibly appealing; however, there needs to be an update to the iPadOS which would make things a little more flexible, a little more mac-like. For the last five-six years, I have been using a Windows desktop as my main computer, and a third generation 12.9” iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. Since I am a commuter, I rely on my iPad A LOT, but I cannot say that I am a hundred percent happy with its multitasking skills. Stage Manager is great, but it still feels clunky for some reason (it is possible that my device is too old now to handle such a feature - not enough processing power, not enough ram). I will soon be moving to the US to pursue a graduate degree, and as I am leaving my main device behind, a decision I have to make now is whether to buy a 14” Macbook Pro, or a 13” M4 iPad Pro. My inclination is towards the former; however, the upcoming WWDC is something to see - perhaps a revolutionary update to the iPadOS? By the way, another thing that makes the iPad option less appealing for me is the lack of a smart keyboard folio. It offers me the hybridity I need with the instant capability to shift between Apple Pencil and keyboard; the magic keyboard folio, however, seems so stationary an accessory for it cannot fold backwards. I would really like that product to be back.

…I’m probably more excited about the Final Cut Camera app.

No it's not. MacOS let's you do a lot more because it's a full desktop OS. Unlike the wall garden IPadOS. You have no freedom to get your apps anywhere else.

I subscribe to the macOS train of thought, and I’m replacing my old 2011 MacBook Pro. But all I use it for is messages, email, calendar… and KZread lol! Occasionally I’ll use it to bulk rename a few thousand files at a time… something I know iOS and iPadOS don’t do… and I have a iPad mini 6 lol!!! But that 13inch looks so pretty!!

Nahh, not until they made imac OS aviable on ipad, it would be amazing to use blender full FCPX or photoshop, right now its over qualified for ipad OS and its not worth it

iOS lacks the functionality and capabilities that macOS possesses. Despite the presence of strong technology, there are still some significant constraints. I am unable to view thumbnails of Sony HIF (HEIF) images in the Files app on my iPad. The issue is in the fact that they initiated the development of the iPad as a larger version of the iPhone, lacking the capability to make phone calls. Currently, hardware surpasses even the performance of the Mac mini. However, the operating system is not equipped to handle such a powerful device. The iPad is not suitable for software developers as it does not support any commonly used integrated development environments (IDEs).

Because laptops' life cycle is much shorter than desktop machines, I'm tempted to upgrade my iPad Pro (when the new ones are available) and my laptop and then use the new iPad Pro as my portable machine. A lot will depend on pricing.

Ahhh!! Again fantastic next gen hardware and design, truly powerful, but limited by its OS! They seriously need to fully split iPad OS from iOS.

I bought a second hand M1 iPad Pro 12.9" for 700 bucks a few months ago and I think it still holds up wonderfully against this M4. I casually use Procreate, Lumafusion and Affinity Photo mostly. If I were to purchase anything else for productivity, I would stick with my current iPad Pro and get a Mac Studio on top. I don't think they have made meaningful advances on the iPad to compel me paying for an upgrade. Yes, the Pencil Pro rolling function would improve things by a large margin, but needing to dish out USD 800 to gain a function on a 99 dollars product is simply a consumer IQ tax. This whole thing feels like a tad insulting, especially for those who bought an M2 iPad Pro. If they made the new iPad Air with an M3 and name the pen Apple Pencil 3, it would be a much better story. I would actually buy the 12.9" Air with the new Pencil for my kids, it would be a good upgrade from the A14 Air. It feels stupid getting a full priced M2 when M4 is already out.

I have the M2 1TB 12.9 Pro and this does not compel me to justify an upgrade. Don’t get me wrong, iPads are great. But until they add a True Extended display on Stage Manager with apps to support it, like my DaVinci Resolve, the real powers of the iPad will be left neglected.

The moment iPad can run MacOS I will consider one.
