M4 iPad Pro After 2 Weeks of Nonstop Use: What Went Wrong?

Ғылым және технология

M4 iPad Pro 2024 - 2 Weeks Later Review: What Went Wrong? | 2024 iPad Pro Review
Apple's 2024 M4 iPad Pro has been out for 2 weeks and I've been using it as my primary away-from-desk work machine ever since. So in this review video, we discuss the good, bad, and ugly with the M4 iPad Pro including the tandem OLED display, the design being a gimmick, the powerful M4 chip and why it should not run macOS, the speakers, cameras, and much more.
As a personal challenge, I tried to use the iPad Pro over my M3 MacBook Air for 2 weeks but was unable to - I explain why in the video (it's not because of the filesystem).
In the end, I discuss why I do think the M4 iPad Pro is a worthy upgrade if you are considering spending the type of money it costs, even if you currently have an M1 or M2 iPad Pro. Enjoy!

What a great review! The iPad Pro does NOT need to run MacOS. All we need is for iPadOS to be beefed up enough to run FULL versions of Microsoft Office to use the iPad Pro as a decent laptop replacement. Until then, my M1 iPad Pro 12.9" will remain my main media consumption device while my M3 Air handles work.

you do NOT need a keyboard to take full advantage of ipad pro - i wish reviewers would stop saying this. A person who REVIEWS things for a living may need the keyboard to take full advantage of it, but most people aren’t reviewers. artists can function quite well without the keyboard. i’ve owned several ipads and never once bothered to drop a single dime on a keyboard. if you really cared about giving truly useful reviews you’d include opinions from a wider array of people and use cases. step outside your tech reviewer bubble. this goes for all of you.

I was just in the Apple Store here in Hamburg to do an exact comparison between Normal and Nano Display for photos. So, the photos are less sharp , especially in fine details like hair, fabrics etc.. and it has more of slight shine (emphasis on light) for phots. This is easy noticeable and could lead to over-sharpen in editing But on the Nano the photo looks more natural, natural matt like a good print. As for reflection, yes it is far less… but for me I could notice them exactly as on the Normal… so that isn’t a big deal if you have windows behind you or so. Outside it might be different but how could test… I’m still debating if I would get the 1TB 13 one (coming from an 12.9 2018). My biggest issue is as you rightfully pointed out is the lack of Apps , for Photo Editing it is the Topaz stuff (at least Photo AI). If Topaz would work then yes i could replace my 16“ MBP as my Main and and only Mac… and could maybe have an combination of iPad and iMac

Maybe the solution is for Apple to make a touchscreen MacBook, or for Apple to allow the dual-boot option like they did with OS X Leopard. Hoping it will be a computer because of a future software update. Buy it for what it is now and what it can do now and for what you actually needed to do. If you need it to be a computer, you should not buy it and you should buy a Mac. If you need a device to draw on because you're an artist then buying it would be a good choice.

For me the iPad Pro is ideal for most tasks including drawing, the iPhone Pro Max can be used for LiDAR surveys and comms, my MacBook Pro is best For BIM (with several monitors) and I can use it away from the office for that too, but useless for freehand drawing. An iMac is not powerful enough but a Mac Pro is overkill. Comparisons like yours are pointless as usefulness of any of the above devices depends on the task. I would have thought that what I’ve described above is more than obvious.

Another vote for the thinness thing being a nothing burger, personally i would rather have had it be a tad thicker , with a headphone jack , and maybe another port as well , i mean you know , it is marketed as a “Pro device “ , and maybe even a bit bigger battery ? The downgrading of the selfie cam to 1080 p if I remember correctly , and the removal of the wide angle camera on the back ? The removal of one mic ? It is hard to make the connection to a “Pro “ device if you are downgrading and removing some features ! Improvements in some areas , but some detractions in others . I’m. Not a content creator , given a choice of the latest or the previous for my use , I think I’d be quite happy with the previous model , and it might even come in a few bucks cheaper ?

They need the iPad to be released first so everyone can beta test on it. In about a year from now I'm sure everyone will be very happy. The thinness is great because when I put the Magic Keyboard on my lap it doesn't topple over anymore. It isn't as top heavy now. Isn't that a good thing? I got the white Magic Keyboard and it never shows the fingerprints that the black keyboard shows. Even with my M1 keyboard it still looks clean. I'm not one to edit anything on the iPad Pro but I find it has all the apps I want compared to the Mac. The Mac is just so boring! Maybe developers will wake up and make some better software that isn't limited to the older iPads. Gaming would be a nice thing.

Honestly, I don’t think MacOS needs to come to the iPad Pro, and part of that is because of the technical limitations. Mostly that’s thermal load - an iPad Pro running MacOS would run it significantly worse than a MacBook Air without redesigning the iPad to be a product that it wasn’t meant to be. It took me a while to come to that conclusion but I’m there now. *_HOWEVER!!_* That being said, what I do think Apple should do is create a iPad Ultra or MacBooklet Ultra or something that is a hybrid of a MacBook and an iPad Pro. Then they could properly engineer it to run MacOS while keeping all the functionality and feature set of the iPad Pro, other than the form factor. It would need to be bigger (thicker at least) and heavier and integrate with the keyboard differently to manage the heat, and it might even need to have active cooling like a MacBook Pro depending on how it’s designed. Whether it’s more like a Microsoft Surface Book series tablet/laptop or more like a Lenovo Yoga flip-over convertible laptop where you can flip the keyboard 180 degrees to the back and have it deactivate and be held and used like a (heavier, thicker) tablet. I just can’t see Apple leaving that market untouched and untapped. There does need to be something that ties the Apple Pencil Pro and touch screen to MacOS, and it’s obviously not the iPad Pro due to the design constraints of what that product is meant to be. And obviously the combo-hybrid device is going to cost more than either of the others, but would still be on par or cheaper than buying both separately. There is a Goldilocks perfect middle ground that exists in a vacuum between the iPad Pro and the MacBook that’s dying to be filled. It really doesn’t make sense for there to be no touch screen/Apple Pencil Pro enabled MacOS device - there’s a perfect marriage in there somewhere, and I do suspect that Apple is probably at least experimenting internally with what that marriage looks like. But the other thing is that we can pretty much guarantee that Apple isn’t rushing that device, either. Will we see it within a year? I don’t know. They seem to like to take 5-10 years to develop a new product or range of products that are substantially different from what they’ve done before. So I’d say we may see that device come at some point within the next 2-5 years at the most, if they haven’t already been working on it since the M1 was tested out in the iPad Pro range.

The emulator might be nothing more than Finder and Mac app support - I’m not sure - but it would be cool.
