Here’s the deal…for all the folks who think 8gb and 256gb is not enough, you’re more than welcome to upgrade before you buy. For us folks that aren’t power users and are price conscious, the standard Air is perfectly fine. It’s crazy that folks want to eliminate a choice for some people based on their supposed needs when options for them are available.

A 2024 1000$ Computer should not have 256 gigs of storage as base and charge 200$ for a 256 gig upgrade. I dont have qualms with the memory because how Apple handles memory management but at this point that base storage is a crime

Patrick, general comment. I have bounced around different reviewers and have stuck with you and Marques. First your presentation manner is top notch like the way you opened with the unboxing and displayed all the elements without comment. But most of all, you strike a good medium of saying what is good and what isn’t and make it sound appropriate for use case and possibilities among current tech. As an old techie (Amiga was my start and love) who spends less these days and wants to get to working solutions faster, you hit the spot. Thank you and keep it up! (And jealous of your studio)

The more I'm testing it, the more improvements I see. It's a good buy.
I've been around computers for a while and know that the primary advantage of increased memory is multitasking and avoidance of disk swapping. That was a big deal back when all hard drives were mechanical and slow, and it's still an issue now because it can potentially shorten the life of soldered down storage. Having said all that, I completely agree that it all depends on the persons use case. My first M1 device was the base Mac mini and with my use case it was perfect, with no disk swapping (I monitored it closely). I didn't have a bunch of Chrome tabs open at the same time. When my computer needs increased I got the base M1 Studio Max but I think most folks won't have to do that.

Exactly, my MacBook Air M1 is a great laptop and is my mobile. But I use my Mac mini M2 pro as my desktop mainframe.
I bought m2 base model last year and returned it. It is slow even though I did some light stuff as a teacher like uploading material to drives and vise versa. It is ok but with the 16 gig I felt the difference. 8 g is good but I did not like slow and need a faster thing and thus I got the 16 gigs with 1 t internal storage. It is more relieving yet ver expensive for me.
@PatrickRambles

Should be better now that there's two NAND chips instead of one.
The MacBook Air does what it was made to do, light work here and there and maybe some light photoshop/Lightroom work. Btw people don't the midnight color, even tho apple said they applied a anodization seal on the metal, it's BS! I picked mine up yesterday and it's full of finger prints, returning it for the starlight.
The base model has a lot of power & is really good for about 95% of the people who aren't power users.
How would an 8GB MBA M3 handle connection to MS Azure Virtual Desktop during the workday? Apps on AVD are Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint and a few others of similar resource needs. I’ve seen the M2 Mac Mini handle tons of heavy tasking with 8GB RAM (4K video editing, photo editing) and did so like a champ. Can the M3 Air do the same or would I have no choice but go 16GB? I’ve used my wife’s M1 Air and it does great, but I can’t test more than 20-30 min of use on AVD so I don’t know if the resource usage gets worse as a work day drags on.
And also tell the battery life in low power mode

Great video! Probably one of the most level-headed approaches to talking about the base model MacBook Air. I got 16/512 M3. Worked on 8/256 M2 for the last year, medium demanding work and it was pretty fine 99% of the time, but I run some Docker containers and do programming, so 16GB would help. But yes better 16/256 than 8/512, since you can always have external SSD (not so practical, but still can help)/ My SSD also got full (256GB), but I do iPhone backup to laptop and have 50GB of music, also work stuff is 50GB. You could be fine with 256GB if you do not store much there and 16GB will make it super fast, whatever you do. (will help for games a bit too)
Minor thing but I like how he didn't rip the paper envelope when unboxing

I have an 8gb/512gb M1 Macbook Air that I use for running around. I'm not a power user but I tend to keep tons of tabs open across multiple browser windows. Until recently I'd actually forgotten the M1 Air was only 8GB and I never had any noticeable slowdowns for a casual use tab hoarder. It performs just like my more powerful machines in that respect. I would so much want the Air with a mini-led screen. I don't understand why they refuse to make one. I would be willing to pay for it. I want the form factor and the lightness of an Air but with a fantastic screen. I don't want to go up to a heavy Pro model just to get the better screen. That's precisely what I did. Makes total sense to me as well.
If you have to go with 8gb (why on earth would you in 2024???) then I think what the faster SSD means for performance when that 8gb is saturated is an interesting test. Also, it's unified memory, so if you're going to drive two high res monitors, what does that do for the amount of ram to actually run programs. That RAM is also being used, I assume, for some form of cache, so again, when it is saturated, what does that do for performance? What do you ahve to run to actually saturate the RAM. I'm on windows and wouldn't dream now of running 8gb. Linux is much better. What's Apple like? With 8gb, how much time do you have to spend 'managing' your apps so they don't go down to a crawl. It's not a crime to have multiple chrome tabs open. A machine purchased, even as a base level, should well and truly be good for that. In 2024 I expect to be able to have multiple apps open and the laptop not grinding to a slug. I think the big issue with the air is the high price and the upgrade price. The base price, at the price charged, should be 16gb of ram and 512gb of storage. It's 2024.

I do agree with you that 16/512 would be a better base level in 2024. With that said, after using it a bit more, the performance really is noticeably better. Faster SSD, double NAND chip (thank God), chrome runs fine with multiple windows and a couple of apps running. I don't think you can compare 8GB PC and 8GB Mac though.

@@PatrickRambles Look forward to your follow up video! If Apple had only gouged less they could have had a real winner. Windows laptops are pretty much 'meh' until Windows on Arm comes along. Which is starting to feel a bit like 'don't hold your breath' on that one. Intel couldn't innovate if they were bit on the ass with an idea.
Wow, a normal person who isn't trying to be an entertainer. Video content and production are tops. Subbed

That's impressive
8GB for a base model in 2024 is BS

Agreed.
8GB in 2024 at that Price. I have to Really Disrespect myself to get that Base Model. 🤣🤣
Yay Apple released the M3 MacBook Air. This is the best time to buy the M2. Seriously, it is the best now due to the price drop. The price of the MacBook Air M1 with a new design. Most users getting the Air don’t need an M3. The M3 is not much better and offers nothing new. Most people won’t even utilize WiFi 6E or dual display support. Get the M2, you won’t regret it.

That's not entirely true. The performance on the M3 is quite a bit better. Most notably because of the much faster SSD. The single NAND issue has been resolved, now it has two which makes everything run much smoother and gives more headroom for multiple apps and browser windows without slowing down. With that said, you're right that the older models will get even better deals and for certain users they will be perfectly enough.
It will good enough when base will be 16/512.
I have expensive taste with an economy budget

I feel that.
But if one upgrades storage to 512 gb at $1300 he can better get a pro m3 512 gb refurb at $1360
