M25 falls silent: First-ever planned daytime closure

It's the country's busiest road. Of all UK motorway traffic, 15 per cent is on the M25 circling London. It became infamous for almost constant traffic jams. But today something more unusual was happening - the first ever planned daytime shutdown since it opened in 1986, for upgrading works.
Passing through six counties, the M25 has been used by hundreds of thousands of cars a day to circumnavigate the capital.
It normally provides a vital link for many air passengers travelling to Heathrow or Gatwick.
But this weekend, the closure of the five-mile section in Surrey, would mean a very long drive the other way round.

That’s not quite how induced demand works. It’s actually that throughput increases until traffic re-emerges. But only within certain limits. Cut the M25 down to 1 lane and it would be far worse because there is a fundamental level of demand that can’t take alternative transport, things like work vans etc. Conversely, build it out to something stupid like 50 lanes, and there aren’t enough people in or near London to clog it up (though the junctions would be bottlenecks).

A3 used to be a bottleneck going past Devils Punch Bowl in Surrey. Before the Hindhead Tunnel was built and opened in 2011. I can see why that Junction 10 on the M25 where it meets with the A3 near Esher is a complete gridlock and a new wider roundabout is being built.

Of course it was calm, everyone was told to stay away. Go look at the alternative routes to see the effects. This is why more lanes does ease congestion, people go the quickest route, an extra lane on a road easing congestion leads more people to take the road instead of alternatives and clogs it back up. "Build it and the people will come" is why we have too many cars, we kept building roads, so the cars kept coming. We know this, we still keep building road for cars, rather than alternatives.

We've just kept rinsing and repeating the 60s, which has kept us from developing anything else. We ought to be living in vertical cities by now, so waste heat can be converted back to usable energy, very little infrastructure exposed to UV or temp swings causing damage and people have multiple levels to choose to commute across as well as up and down and means a monorail can run above people's heads along multiple routes. 40% of the population of London were not born in the the UK. The real reason why the roads are so congested is that we have too many people.

The real reason we have congestion is that this country has no suitable alternative to cars. The mere fact we keep building more lanes is the reason traffic is getting so bad. Cars are an inefficient way of moving people, and obviously have many other negatives such as affordability, damage to the environment, noise and air pollution that we breath in daily. Designing towns and cities such that our most used services and 3rd places are within a 10-20 min walk from where we live, and funding mass transit projects properly such that they become the more appealing alternative to general commuters would be ground-breaking. We need to follow the examples in mainland Europe, *not* keep looking to the disasterous city design and traffic planning that took off in the US around the 60s. And by the way, globalization is inevitable, let's look to the future rather than try and maintain the past (at seemingly any cost looking at a few of the more disturbing comments...).

If the traffic police stopped and fined people who do not use their lanes properly - traffic would flow better, however the Govt. in it's infinite wisdom has opened the doors to immigrants who consider places such as Calcutta etc. as perfect examples of acceptable driving practices. God help the indigenous British people.. 🙄

Interstate 5 in Los Angeles, and the entire freeway system is so well built around the city that except in peak hours, traffic always flows. US highway networks are incredibly well planned to take on huge volumes of traffic even at low speeds. M25 is a baby compared to those and more cars than the 4 lanes can take. Poor thing will collapse soon and the A roads in small Surrey villages will take the hit with gridlocks every morning. Oh, and not to mention the never ending 13-year road works, and the tall yellow thingies called average speed cams.

It's almost as if the damned government had written the script. Not a word of criticism of the idea that the country needs more roads, in spite of the DECADES of warnings about the reality that more roads simply results in more traffic. No mention of how cripplingly expensive public tansport is in the UK, or the cutbacks to services in that sector, just the parroted BS of needing more roads. TBF, I still reckon that C4 News is easily the best broadvast news in. the UK, but that, unfortunately, is a very low bar..

more roads are not the answer. better options and better non car infrastructure is the solution to less traffic and less cars overall. dedicated bus lanes but removing car lanes = more people on buses and less in cars. encourage other transport and make is quicker and cheaper than families owning multiple cars.

The UK is a joke, there is a 30km stretch of motorway near me in Spain, they resurfaced the lot overnight. I didn’t hear a thing and in the morning it was complete and marked. The road maintenance companies in the UK have zero oversight that’s why the roads are so bad everywhere.
