M2 Mac Mini | Powerful Enough For 4K Video Editing? | 2 Weeks Later

The M2 Mac Mini is honestly a mind blowing computer for the price and can do way more that you'd expect. I spent some time with one and here is how it went.

    Another thing some people may not realize is that you can get the 16 GB M2 Mac Mini with the base storage, and get a Mac Mini Hub with NVMe enclosure. Just add whatever NVMe you want there that's compatible and you've upped your storage for way less than what Apple is charging.

  • @ShaqHossain

    @ShaqHossain

    Жыл бұрын

    It’ll definitely be able to produce what you’re looking for. Performance will vary depending on factors like how many streams of video, codecs & bitrates, etc. 50-60gb is quite large in terms of file size if you get the base storage so having a good SSD to edit off would be important. It’s hard to go wrong with any of the Silicon chips TBH. Maybe look into the Refurbished M1 Mac Mini or macbooks if you want to save a few bucks

I’m future proofing myself as I currently have a 2015 MB Pro with 16g ram the 8gb vid card and upgraded the ssd to 2TB. I can’t go past Mojave OS and so i was looking at at a new MBP 16” with M2 pro and basically the laptop form costs me another 2K. not worth it for me as my laptop stays on my desk. I will eventually upgrade my laptop to a newer machine but for now the Mac mini m2 seems the best bang for my $$. I intend to use 3 monitors and all my music production equipment hooked up to it. Thanks for your review. The base machine for cheap at Costco might be an cool buy for hooking upstairs to the TV as a base media device.

    I’d explore the refurbished Mac Studio as well (M1 Max 10C CPU 24C GPU, 32GB Unified Mem, 512GB SSD [only downside imo]) at 1,800 USD. Seems like a good pick if you can find a data storage solution! Refurbs from Apple are pretty much identical to brand new products Another thing to double check is if you’d be able to connect to 3 monitors, I vaguely remember there being complaints about a macbook (i think?) being limited to only 1 or 2 external monitors. Not sure how this translates over to the studio and mac mini. It shouldn’t be an issue but it’s something to verify Also thats a pretty sick idea to run it as a media computer 👀 any specific reason you have to go for the mac mini instead of a apple tv? (I keep my media consumption to mainly streaming services for convenience)

    The video export time is the less important thing! It's more important how it works on the timelines with multiple 4K sources and stuff like that. Nobody puts you a gun into your head saying 'if the video isn't rendere in 2 minutes i'll shoot'... no one|

    Any suggestions on how to benchmark & compare the metric of how a project works on a timeline that isn’t purely subjective? That’s the main reason for the export test, to get some sort of reference between how the machines handle the workload to create a comparison point

    yes and it should be the least important thing to consider when buying a pc for editing cause after long hours editing, 2 - 10 minutes for render a video should be fine and i wont take it seriously

    @@ShaqHossain You know, putting on the timeline an high-bitrate 4k video (maybe even a raw one) is a starting point. Starting making cuts, color grading it, adding elements like transitions, text, overlayed videos and stuff like that. Again, the rendering time doesn't give you more than 0,5% information that you need to know before buying an editing device...

    He is lyin to our faces at 5:11, he said its not comparing apples to apples. But he is actually comparing 2 apple products instead, he thought we would not notice. Guess we are smarter than he thought (Horrible attempt at a joke, I know, don't attack me. Lol)

    Simple.....yes, the base M2 Mini can do 4K...but if you use your Mac to make money....get a "Pro" variant.

    Pretty much, you can still get by with the base model if you’re making money with it but for the extra 700$ will save you so much time when you start adding it all up. But at the same time that 700$ can potentially be spent elsewhere for a different piece tool to help your workflow.

    Disagree, the base M2 Mini has done wonders for me and stacks up well against my Ryzen 7 Windows Machine with a dedicated video card. Even a freelance editors can make a living off of the base model.
